Choosing Joy Learning from those who smile through sorrow Calling All Baby Boomers Iget paid to listen. Being paid to eat would not be beter. Well, this way, I do not need a crane to get upstairs. And this way, I beter learn to cope. As a career-long newspaperman, I listen to story after story of people I start of pitying and end up envying. I listened to a quadriplegic from New Albany - a man who could not so much as nod his head - tell me he was lucky still to see his children. He had fallen from a small ladder while building those kids a swingset, by the way. I listened to a Madison man claim good fortune, as well, that a rare infection fnally had relented from which he lost all four limbs and parts of his face. He carried on irrepressibly with prosthetics and a smile. I listened to parents in New Washington of a beautiful, talented teenage girl, killed in an inexplicable car crash, insist they are grateful for having had her for at least a litle while. I listened to people homeless after fres and foods and tornadoes, ravaged by addictions, estranged from loved ones or deep in debt. All relied on beter days ahead. Story after story, year after year, decade after decade, I hear people somehow make the best of unimaginably worst situations. They inspire as they explain. I believe it my privilege to pass along their grit and faith. I am just as hopeful that I heed their lessons. I apparently am about to fnd out. I forget too much of what I hear. Stories of determination buoy. Then pety problems stack up and ruin the mood. I let myself be consumed by the phone bill that seems too high or the latest car ratle or why my IU Hoosiers do not win more basketball games. I prety much always need a shower from sweating the small stuf. And now I feel sick from leukemia before the leukemia actually makes me sick. The disease is winning before our batle so much as starts. The very week I retired in 2012 from ‘Story after story, year after year, decade after decade, I hear people somehow make the best of unimaginably worst situations..’ full-time journalism, I was diagnosed with a chronic form of leukemia, a blood cancer. Could be that it chose me years ago. It just sits there, hibernating, deciding if or when to wake up and hassle me. My leukemia is stage zero. Stage negative 27 would be beter. I literally can live with zero, however. There is nothing yet worth treating. My disease is incurable, though I well may die of something else. I prefer geting fatened by a red-light-running taxi while visiting Times Square on New Year’s Eve, 2050. Cancer comes gift-wrapped in perspective. I have a more-or-less reasonable excuse to get psyched out about the future. Then again, I may not sufer until next year or next decade or whenever America fnally runs out of Bushes or Clintons for whom to vote. I just may be the healthiest cancer patient in the world. When I need to accept the cards I am dealt, I believe I will. Hold of on your pity, and I will do likewise. In the meantime, let me recall all those stories that can make me guilty for my pety peeves. Let me also realize all I continue to hear, even in retirement. For instance, I hang out mornings at a YMCA with mostly old people who think mostly young. They confront assorted illnesses and ailments, reason upon reason to stay in bed instead of to hop on a treadmill. These sweaty oldies do not lecture me to keep my chin up. They get the point across by how they simply keep going forward. Plus I am now in the grandfather business and my granddaughter cannot yet spell cat, much less leukemia. She deserves a grandpa with occasional spunk, not one with routine sorrow. And when my wife joins me in retirement, she too will expect someone with the energy to fuss about the Visa bill. I look forward to being there for them and for all those unintentional role models whose stories I tell. Thank the Lord my story is too boring to measure up. When I need reminders to remain upbeat, I have plenty. So do you. You may not need reminding, but I do. • After 25 years, Dale Moss retired as Indiana columnist for The Courier-Journal.
