The nets that trawlingboats frequently leave in the sea actas magnets for the 8 million tonnes ofplastic detritus estimated to be throwninto the world’s oceans each year.They create islands of waste that traphundreds of thousands of sea mammalsand fish. Plastic is also ingested byaquatic animals, such as sea turtles, whomistake it for viable food.The eyewear industry is a $120 billionmarket in which plastic is the mainsource of raw material and sustainabilityis almost non-existent.
