4. ConceptOnce the project was re-opened, theconcept was improved and the detailswere resolved. One of the aspects thatrequired definition was the materialchoice, as it would greatly determinethe sustainability of the product,defining the impact due to aspectssuch as its recyclability, sourcing and itsmanufacturing methods. The secondstage of development was resolvingengineering details, that presented itsown set of challenges.Transparent Sound wanted to usematerials that were also coherent withtheir sustainability values. This stageproved difficult as material choice oftenpresents complex and contradictoryinterests. As an example, they werefaced with the choice between glassand plastic for the body of the speaker.The glass presented more durability andquality perception, but its productionrequired more energy consumption andit was also heavier than plastic and thushad a greater environmental impactduring transportation. They finally optedfor the glass as they prioritised durabilityand quality. A similar issue arose in thechoice between aluminium and steel, asthe former is easily recycled and lighterbut is also more malleable and easier tobend than the latter. In this case theyprioritised recyclability and decided onthe aluminium.The design for manufacture (DFM) wasvery thorough, as the concept had notinitially been developed to the level ofdetail required by a commercial product.This stage presented a set of challengesregarding the feasibility of the project.One of the main aims of the projectwas to develop a speaker that providedexcellent sound quality. Nevertheless,this was extremely complicated becauseof the concept of the product, that wasdesigned to be easily disassembled.The development of a complete sealcabinet that could also be disassembledproved to be an engineering challengethat required a lot of extra work.KEYWORDS: Material choice, engineeringchallenges.Recyclability was a large focus in thematerial choice, in contrast to thecommon practices in the tech industry.The final design is fully recyclable,except for its PCB which includes somematerials that are not yet recovered. Itis currently easy to separate from theother components to be processedaccordingly. Achieving the recyclabilityof this component is currently a focus forTransparent Sound.41
