Thenetwork of 20-25 ports picks up thenets and other plastic materials thatthe fishermen throw away thanks tocontainers specifically dedicated. Thesematerials are taken to the recyclingcompany that they are associated withwhere it’s separated, classified, washedand finally recycled to get pellets thatcan be injected again.Around 90% of the material that thefishermen throw away can be recycled,and Sea2see uses part of it for theirglasses, as plastic injection needs anhomogeneous mixture. The rest of theplastic goes to the normal recyclingchain. To give some data they are actuallyrecycling around a tone of fishing net perday, and their goal is to reach five tonesper day in mid 2018.These pellets are transported to Italy-probably the country with moretradition and industry in the eyewearsector- where they are injected toproduce the glasses and handmadepainted to assure the highest possiblequality. The glasses are sold in severalcountries of Europe, and soon in UK, USAand Australia.consumes 10m2 of fishing net thatotherwise would probably end up in thesea.It’s also important to highlight that tomanufacture a product that is as visibleand important for the personal image asglasses and sunglasses can also createa social change, because it’s showing tomany people that waste materials canhave a second life.During this 2018 Sea2see is giving evenmore steps to be circular, because theyare creating their own recycling plant toimprove the percentage of plastic theycan manage and the economic efficiencyof the system, and they are about tostart collaborations with fishermen’sbrotherhoods in Senegal to buy theirwasted fishing nets, something that willprovide these communities with verynecessary resources, creating directimpact in the area.
