‘Have a
plan in
place’
By SHELLEY TOPP
ANorth Canterbury firefighter
who helpedtackleAustralia’s
bushfire crisis says New Zealand
is unlikely to face blazes like those
across the Tasman, but ‘‘we still
have major risks’’.
Deputy Principal Rural Fire
Officerfor North Canterbury,
Dale Wilhelm, was deployed to
Australia for11days last month to
help with the fire fighting.
New Zealand’sgeographyand
vegetation types lessenthe risk of
such intense longlasting bush
fires here,hesays.
In Australia, the sizeoffires
meant that in some cases people
had time to prepare for their
approach.
‘‘Our fires don’t tendtogive us
that sortoftime to warn people.’’
Arecent example in the
Waimakariri Districthighlighted
the fact that, bythe time afire was
detected, the person rang 111, and
firefighters arrived, buildings
were alreadyatrisk.
‘‘Because of this,peopleneed to
be prepared and one of the best
ways to do thisistokeep the grass
around your property cut short
and flammable tree speciesand
other materialsaway from
buildings.
‘‘Just like othernatural
disasters, having aplan in place
for what you would do and being
prepared to selfevacuateare
important.’’
North Canterbury is now under
arestrictedfire season, which
means that mostfires require a
permit.‘‘We will only be issuing
permitsfor fires thatcan be
carriedout safely.’’
Surf’sup, and the fish are biting
By SHELLEY TOPP
Along lineofkeen fishers, young and old,
spreadout alongAmberley Beach last
Sundayfor aday in the sun, yarning and
tryingtheir luck during the annual
Amberley Beach Surfcastingand Family
Fun Day.
Contestants began lining up at dawn to
register for the popular event and secure
aprime fishing spot,even thoughthe
competition didn’tbegin until 8am.
‘‘We had to be hereat6am to beat
them,’’ said Simon Mather, amember of
the Amberley and Districts Lions Club,
which organised the event.
The competition had sections for adults
and children, with 165 entrants in all.
Fish were far from plentiful earlyon
and there was the occasional lighthearted
grumble about‘‘no fish’’.
However,bylunch time,more than30
fish had been caught and enteredinthe
contest,with some competitors saying
they had thrown smallerfish back for
another day.
By the end of the competition at 3pm
things were looking much better, witha
record number of fishentered.
Christchurch’s Brian Phillips, who has
beentaking part in the competition for
fiveyears and fishes from the same spot
every year,caught aspiny dogfish on
Sunday. However, he said the days of
good fishing were gone.
‘‘It is aday out and we have had some
fun. Thatisthe main thing,’’hesaid.
The familyfriendly event is abig
fundraiser for the club.
All moneyraised will go back into the
community through the club’s
sponsorship programme.
The social aspect of the event
contributed to its popularity, Simon said.
‘‘Allfishermen like agood yarn and
here there are alot of likeminded people
in one placetotalk to.
‘‘Fishing can be apretty solitary
experience, so Ithink theyenjoythe
company in thiscompetition.’’
Snipping scissors raise cash
By RACHEL MACDONALD
Sausages were sizzling,
raffle tickets were flying
out the door, and the fire
brigade was out in force to
help on Sunday during a
fundraiser in Cust to help
those fighting Australia’s
bushfires.
Every chair was full at
10am in the Cust fire
station, in front of the
hairdressing stations, and
the queue of people
waiting to get their hair cut
for charity was still there at
4pm that afternoon.
All together, the Cust
Community Standing
Together for Australia
Bushfires initiative was a
huge success, says local
hairdresser and organiser
Amy Roberts.
It raised $6000 on the
day, with raffle tickets still
on sale until the end of the
week.
‘‘I was blown away by the
response from this
community and those who
came to see us from outside
the area,’’ Amy says.
‘‘And the donations for
the raffles kept on coming
in, even on the day.’’
Once the raffle sales
have closed, all the funds
raised will be donated
directly to rural brigades
fighting the Australian
bushfires on the front lines.
Dale returns home from bushfire duties
From Page 1
He also voiced his concerns
over fireslit by membersof
the public on the likesof
beaches and riverbeds.
‘‘Most of the beaches and
riverbeds are managed by the
ocal or regional council, DOC,
or in the case of Waimakariri
beaches, the Tuhaitara
Coastal Park trust;and all of
theseorganisations have
stated they don’t want fires on
the areas they manage
without their prior approval.’’
The fires started in New
SouthWales at the startofthe
bushfire seasoninOctober
and have also beenburning in
Victoria and other Australian
states,killing 28 peoplesofar.
An estimated1billion
animalshave perishedsofar.
‘‘It was definitely the most
extensive fires Ihave worked
on,’’hesays.
During his Australian
His administrativerole
included collatingpaperwork
organising foodand water for
the firefightersand water
Fjord horses bound for festival
By RACHEL MACDONALD
The Vikings are coming to Norsewood
next month, with two Norwegian Fjord
horses from North Canterbury leading
the charge.
The event is the Viking Festival
Norsewood NZ, being held in the
Manawatu village of the same name at
the end of February.
This celebration of all things Norse
aims to raise funds for the township,
which was founded by Norwegian
settlers in 1872, at the same time as the
Danes established Dannevirke 20km
the Fjord Horse New Zealand banner.
The same breed as Sitron, Prince
one of the world's oldest and purest
horse breeds. They are used both under
saddle and in harness.
‘‘When Imoved from Norway to
Cambridge, in the North Island, Iended
up with two daughters who rode, and the
only horses available came off the racing
track.
‘‘I didn't want thoroughbreds for them,
though; Iwanted something calmer and
more sensible.
‘‘I had encountered Fjords in Norway.
These are the horses the Vikings rode
into battle and loved them for their
temperament, hardiness and social
nature.''
They are not ideal as afirst pony. They
are small draught horses, so are very
strong and well suited to more
experienced riders.
They make great hacks and pony club
horses, with ahuge jump on them, she
says.
‘‘The only issue is not feeding them too
much.
‘‘They're seriously low maintenance,
so they don't need hard feed or covering,
and you can leave them for months
between rides and know that they'll be
fine when you get back up there.’’
The Fjords are expected to lead the
opening ceremonial processions in
Norsewood on February 29 and March 1
Good Street
under review
By SHELLEY TOPP
Achangeofstatus for partofRangiora’s
Good Street is proposed by the
Waimakariri District Council.
The council wants to transform the
area between HighStand the service
centre lane, nearthe New World
supermarket, into afriendlier
community space.
To do this the status of the area needs
to be formallychanged from alegal road
to areserve, so that it can be used as a
laneway and/or apedestrian area.
The changewill allow the councilto
protect that section of Good St for safer
pedestrian use. ‘‘By changing the road
status,itwould open up some great
opportunities to make the areamore
public friendly,’’ the council’s business
and centres manager, Simon Hart,says.
A40daypublic notificationperiod is
underway to inform the public aboutthe
proposal.ItendsonTuesday, February
18, at 5pm.
During this time the publiccan have a
say on the proposal,says Vanessa
Thompson, acouncilbusiness and
centres unit adviser. ‘‘Ifweare
successfulwith theroad stop, we would
look to make the areamore attractive
and functional for pedestrians.’’
This would include things like
planting, lights,seating and new paving.
It might also include space for events,
arts and culture displays, or simply
making the area intoanattractive
location to linger and shop.
‘‘We are keen to see the space used
much morebythe community and want
to create apublic space that promotes
the health and wellbeing of the
community,’’she says.
Weighty themes in show
By SHELLEY TOPP
The dark, brooding work of
Rangiora artist Tobias
Gilsenan in his latest
exhibition, CON_SPIRO,
delivers amessageof
impending ecologicaldoom.
Although the message is
weighty, Tobias says it is not
acall for action.‘‘I don’t
think an artist should do
that.’’
Instead, he is simply
hopingpeople will lookat
his work, think about it and
want to buy it ‘‘soIcan
The artist,who is also a
postie, was influenced for
the exhibitionbythe Tower
of Babel (a mythical
structure in biblical
literature) and Douglas
Adams’ Babel Fish from
Hitchhikers Guide To The
Galaxy.
‘‘In today’s society we
have lost plenty of skills due
to technology,laziness and
specialisation of trades,’’he
says. ‘‘We now rely solelyon
the internetand our
phones.The BabelFish has
all the information which
must be squeezed out.’’
Other themes include
conservation,mining, the
dairy industry and
deforestation, with The Sky
Council credit rating rises
By DAVID HILL
The Waimakariri District Council has
received awelcomeboosttoits credit
rating.
Credit ratingagency Standard and
Poor's announced last weekthat the
council’s ratinghad shifted from AA longterm
and A1+ short term with anegative
outlooktoaAA/A1+ with astable
outlook.
MayorDan Gordonwelcomed the news,
whichwill help ensurethe council
receives favourable terms for loans.
‘‘TheAArating equates thecouncil
with New Zealand’s national creditrating
—the ‘sovereignrating’, and Standard
and Poor’sdoes not rate any individual
council higherthan the sovereign rating.
‘‘This improvement in outlookistaking
placeayear earlier than expected and is
due to projects nearing completionand a
lowering of the council’s debtmargin,
whichisan appropriate position to be in
as we looktostartthe annual plan
process.’’
Mr Gordon saysthe credit ratingis
important for the council as it looksto
fund new infrastructuretomeetthe
needs of agrowingpopulation, expected
to reach75,000by2028.
‘‘Whilethis is achallenge fromthe
perspective of payingfor infrastructure
andhigher service levels, there are also a
lotofpositivesthat comes with growth,
such as new investment, businesses, jobs
andopportunity, which creates avibrant,
thriving district.’’
Mr Gordonisconfident rates canbe
kepttoanincrease of 4percent, lower
thanthe 4.5% projected in the 2018/28
LongTerm Plan.
The ratesrise includes a1%annual
increase to pay for the earthquake
recovery loan,0.5% for the sports stadium
loanand 2.2% to coverinflation.
The council also needs to allowfor new
projects not anticipated in 2018,
includingthe likelyimpact of new water
standards, changes to the wastelevy,
roading projects such as the west
Rangiorarealignment, replacing Skew
Acase of burgeoning bunnies
Aplague of rabbits is invading my home.
Out in the orchard, it is way beyond
anything seen in WatershipDowns.
Rabbits are going forth and multiplying
—regularly.
What began as mum, dad,and acouple
of kids, has expanded dramatically.
It seems that, as the burn pile grows,so
does the bunny population.
They seem to know the burn pile won’t
be lit anytime soonbecause of the crisp
summer conditions.They hop, skip,
saunter, and chomp on anythingedible,
without acare in the world, only taking
coverwhen the dogs are let off.
One even tauntsthe heading dog by
sleeping just metresfrom its kennel.
It seems he, and the two huntaways,
have no idea that these fluffy residents
need to be chomped,not roundedupor
barked at. Taking aim at themwith a
firearmisstymied by the proximity of our
neighbours.
Seeing the growingproblem, whichis
not justinmypatch, takesmeback to my
childhood in Central Otago.
Ican remember as akid traipsing
around aftermybrother, my breathnearly
freezing,checkingtraps for bunnies on our
Queensberry farm before heading offto
school.
It was just one tool in an arsenal of tools
used to stopthe scourge of rabbitsthat
gobbled up stock tucker, and undermined
paddocks, in an area where preciouslittle
rain ever fell.
Therewas the occasional shoot,and the
introduction of killerviruses, but rabbits
seem to invariably win.
Maybeitistime to returntodedicated
rabbit boards,with programmestohelp
control the rampant bunnies.
The Canterbury West Coast Air
Rescue Helicopter Service will be the
beneficiary of the day, and it is hoped to
have one of its helicopters fly in so
people can meet the crew. However, this
will depend on workload.
President Richard Frost says, as a
volunteer fireman in the Hurunui
district, he sees firsthand the very real
difference the helicopter service makes
to people’s lives and wellbeing in what
is alarge area.
Out on the track, the Heavy Horse
500metre Challenge, during which draft
horses will pound around the track, is on
again, while the defending Lakes
Station team will have serious
competition this year in the Station
Challenge 800m race, and 200 metre
Rescue Race.
Competitors are expected from all
over the South Island, including from
Clarence, Kaikoura, Motunau and as far
afield as Glenorchy. They all will be
hoping to knock the Lakes Station team
off its perch.
Harness Horses will be racing again in
the 2400m events, which often prove to
be some of the tightest races of the day,
with some real photo finishes to get the
crowd on their feet and cheering.
The Lead Rein competition for
youngsters and the Kidzcarts Race will
be held to showcase the next generation
of budding drivers.
Free children's entertainment is
being offered with the Mitre 10 Bouncy
Castle, The Wipe Out and the DK
Custom Cabins children’s playhouses.
Pedalmania, which is ahit with young
and old, will be returning.
Other features include horse power of
adifferent kind from the Canterbury
Mustang Car Club and the Canterbury
MG Car Club, which will have members’
cars on display.
Agreat crowd pleaser will be back
again in the form of the Hurunui Hotel
It would not be agreat raceday
without the Fashion in the Field
competition, in which judges will be
looking for the bestdressed child,
woman and gentleman of the day. With
free entry to this event and great prizes
on offer, it is worth making the effort to
dust off the fascinator and top hat.
The tugofwar event will finish the
day off with teams of five seeing who has
enough strength to take the prize home.
Entries will need to be in quickly on the
day as there is limited space available —
registrations need to be made at the
public bar.
With great prizes being donated by
local businesses and organisations, the
Beach group to
mark 90 years
By DAVID HILL
The Pines Kairaki Beach
Association is set to
celebrate 90 years.
Event organiser Mandy
Cooke says the
association has survived
the earthquakes and red
zoning, and is now ready
to mark its birthday
celebrations with a
community gala in the
Pines Beach Oval on
Sunday, February 2, from
10am to 3pm.
‘‘We proudly brought
this event back to life last
year, after patiently
waiting for eight years.’’
Asmall hiccup with the
weather saw the event
moved from November
2018 to February 2019
Exciting year ahead for Kaiapoi schools
By DAVID HILL
Kaiapoi’s schools are looking ahead to a
busy year, with more building
development in store.
Kaiapoi Borough School principal
Murray Overton and his Kaiapoi North
School counterpart Jason Miles say they
are excited about overseeing building
projects this year.
Mr Miles says site work will begin next
month to replace the double classroom
block destroyed by arson in November
2018.
‘‘The new classroom block will be
gratefully received and will house our
newentrant classes.
‘‘It will include teaching spaces and
breakout areas for playbased learning,
art and cooking, kitchen and toilet
facilities and plenty of outdoor deck
space for our children.’’
The school has the use of temporary
classrooms until the project is
completed.
Mr Overton says planning is under way
for anew technology centre to replace
the aged facility which serves around
650 year 7and 8pupils from 10 North
Canterbury schools, with construction
expected to begin midyear.
He says earthquake repairs and
maintenance to the school pool have
finally been completed, which should
give the younger pupils something to get
excited about.
‘‘It's not quite large enough for the
older students to get into as well, but we
are grateful to have this valuable
resource up and running again.’’
Mr Miles says his school is to receive
$374,220 from the Ministry of
Education’s school investment package.
The money is likely to be spent on
upgrading buildings missed in the
school’s recent property
redevelopment, improving outdoor
surfaces, landscaping and upgrading the
office and administration block.
‘‘The specific projects will be
confirmed by our Board of Trustees in
the next few months. We are very
grateful for this additional funding to
further enhance our school
environment.’’
Kaiapoi Borough School is set to
receive more than $200,000, with the
Board of Trustees meeting soon to
discuss how to spend the money.
‘‘We have some exciting possibilities
for spending this money and look
forward to getting projects under way,’’
Mr Overton says.
The school year begins next
Wednesday, with Kaiapoi North School
set to welcome 30 new pupils.
Mr Overton says he can’t wait for the
new school year to begin.
‘‘We are excited to get our learning
programmes under way and look
forward to welcoming back students and
their whanau.
‘‘There are also anumber of new
families joining our community and we
look forward to getting to know them
too,’’ he says.
New arrivals ... Pupils at Kaiapoi North
School watched early last year as
temporary classrooms were lifted off
trucks to replace adouble classroom
destroyed by arson. Work will begin next
month on apermanent replacement for
the lost classrooms.
playcentre session was in
1944. Bet Rutherford and
Una Boyce, concerned
about the welfare of young
families, were central
figures in establishing a
playcentre. In the early
years, Amberley
Playcentre operated from
the Sunday School Parish
Hall on Church Street.
In 1956, it moved into
the courthouse on
Markham Street.
In 1973, planning for a
purposebuilt playcentre
in Chamberlain Park
began. The years that
followed saw many
inventive and fun,
fundraising initiatives.
All labour for the new
building was given free of
charge thanks to the
fathers of children
volunteering on Saturday
mornings and local
tradespeople charging
only material costs.
An opening ball was
held to mark the completion
of the building.
The playcentre is still
going strong today as a
free early childhood
education centre for preschoolers
aged up to 6
years. Atrained early
childhood educator is at
every session.
Those interested in
enrolling their youngsters
can visit during the three
weekly sessions —9.15am
to 12.15pm on Tuesdays,
Seasons later in NC
By DAVID HILL
Late seasonal conditions are creating a
few headaches for the region’s farmers.
Federated Farmers North Canterbury
president and Oxford dairy farmer
Cameron Henderson says while
January’s dry and mild conditions are
‘‘nothing out of the ordinary’’, this
season’s weather has produced mixed
results.
‘‘There is aconcern that all of our
seasons seem to be later this year. We
had alate winter into August and it feels
abit like spring at the moment.
‘‘October was abit cold and then
December was windy, hot and dry, which
set us back awee bit.
‘‘There was plenty of water in the
river, but we couldn’t use it. It certainly
caught afew people off guard.’’
Mr Henderson says production is
tracking reasonably well compared to
last season, though ‘‘the bumps are
hitting us at different times of the year’’.
‘‘These conditions are pretty good as
long as you’ve got water on hand. Feed
quality seems to be holding up pretty
well.
‘‘The cows are in good condition,
there’s plenty of feed on hand and it’s
not too hot on the cows. Alot of the guys
were feeding out in December for a
week, but now we’re back into surplus.’’
Fonterra’s forecast farmgate milk
price is also looking stable, which is
good news for dairy farmers.
Federated Farmers’ meat and wool
chairman Daniel Maxwell, of Cheviot,
says there is plenty to be positive about
in the meat industry.
‘‘The markets have been really good.
Prices have come back abit now as they
always do, but the mood is still generally
very positive.’’
Prices for prime lambs and store
lambs were positive before Christmas,
Cameron Henderson
but now it is amatter of waiting for ‘‘the
cropping guys to do their harvest’’ before
selling off the remaining store lambs, Mr
Maxwell says.
‘‘At this time of year the market always
goes abit flat.’’
He says having around 26,000 ewes on
sale at tomorrow’s Hawarden Ewe Fair
is apositive for local farmers.
‘‘The works price for ewes before
Christmas was fairly strong, but there
should be good opportunities for
farmers to restock.’’
While prime wool prices have been
positive, farmers are effectively making
aloss to shear strong wool sheep, he
says.
Conditions on farm are also normal for
this time of year, Mr Maxwell says.
‘‘Yes, we are dry at the moment, but
that’s what happens in North
Canterbury at this time of year.
‘‘As long as we get that autumn rain
around the Cheviot show weekend we
will be right.’’
Examination
of succession
North Canterbury farmers wanting
advice on farm succession planning
could benefit from workshops in
Rangiora.
More than half of sheep and beef farms
are expected to change hands over the
next decade, meaning succession can be
apressing issue for some farmers.
ARed Meat Profit Partnership (RMPP)
workshop series, covering farm business
transition and succession, starts on
March 11. It aims to help farmers
navigate the process.
RMPP chairman Malcolm Bailey says
there is an opportunity to help farmers
work through issues and plan for positive
outcomes.
“Many farmers have said they find it
hard to know where to start the
conversation because of the emotional
attachment they have to their farms, and
the tensions of handling significant
assets, often with competing family
interests.
“A key goal for RMPP is to help farmers
through this process by providing
information regarding succession
options and ownership structures, and
sharing examples of successful
outcomes.”
Farmers will be provided with
resources and advice to help them
explore the range of options available to
them as they look at transition and
succession.
Mr Bailey says there is also a
possibility of linking people wanting to
progress in the redmeat sector with
those wanting to exit.
The workshops will run on Wednesday,
March 11, April 8, and May 13, at the
Rangiora Town Hall. They are limited to
eight farm businesses, with up to four
people from any one business able to
attend. To register, go to rmpp.co.nz.
2020 Skope Classic -Car Racing like no other!
After 30 years ofuninterrupted classic race meeting,
the Canterbury Car Club along with the long-time
sponsorand supporter, SkopeIndustries, will celebrate
the iconic two-day birthday event this weekend with
some fanfare.
Originally under the name ofthe BP Alfa Classic,
PDLIndustries took over namingrightsin1995 before
Skope became involved in2003. The enthusiasm from
competitors and the public has never waned, and the
meeting remains the biggest in both entry and crowd
numbersonthe club’s calendar.
Ahandful of cars from the inaugural 1991 event
remain andwhile thevalue of thesecarshas increased,
thecurrent owners stillbelieve that as racing cars, their
rightplace is on thetrack.
Over the years the event has invariably carried a
theme. This year itwill celebrate 50 years of the Open
Saloon CarAssociation (OSCA). StrictlyaSouthIsland
affair these days, OSCA was formed byalocal group
who deemed that the costs of racing inthe national
championship for “all-comers” type cars had become
tooexpensive.
In theearly years, thefront runningcarswerealways
V8 powered. This has changed with time, with turbo
androtary-powered cars also becomingfront-runners.
ForOSCA’s birthday at theSkope it is anticipatedthat
some 30 cars will line up.Someofthesehavenot raced
for years. This includes the winning MK1 Ford Escort
Turbo ofMichael Johnston, acar restored and driven
by newowner,NickDonaldson.
Also in the field will bea1977 5-litre Alfa Romeo
Alfetta, acar that has not raced inOSCA but against
them in the1980s. It is competingbyinvitationand will
be drivenbyformerBNTV8 champion,Angus Fogg.
Other saloon cars ofnote that will compete in other
classesinclude threeformerAustralianSupercars,a2004
Ford Falcon, a2006 Ford Falcon and a2007 Holden
Commodore, along with aselection of New Zealand
muscle cars andthe HistoricTouring Carcategory.
Acrowd-pleaser for many years has been the Formula
5000 revival series cars. Thecategory fits nicely into the
themeofclassic cars.Atatime when the“soundofsilence”
vehicles are becoming more common on the road, it is
generallyacceptedthatthe soundofthese cars alongwith
theV8salooncarsare an addedcrowd attraction.
In the driver line, will be the well-known Richards
family -fatherJim,aseven-timewinner at Bathurst,his
son Steven, afive-time winner of this classic event and
hisson,Clay, whonow drives Formula Ford in Australia.
While the major attraction is awonderful array of
cars, the meeting isalso designed tocater for families.
Pit entry comes atnoextra charge and spectators are
welcome to mingle with drivers and their cars. For
younger family members, there will be anumber of
activities. We’ve got one huge children’sactivity area
this year.
There have onlybeen 4outstanding
driverswho have taken part in all 30
Classic Car events, nowknown as Skope.
The Kaiapoi Promotions
Association expects 2020tobe
abusy year for the town.
Business manager Martyn
Cook says developing a
Kaiapoi brand concept and
organising amonthlong
festival in September are
priorities for this year.
He said abreakfast
workshopheld late last year
revealed that businessessaw
developing walking and cycle
routes and establishingan
iconic eventasessential to
developing aKaiapoibrand.
The obvious contendersfor
an iconic eventincludethe
Kaiapoi Christmas Carnival in
December and the river
carnival, on March1.
‘‘Therivercarnival makes
sensegiven the town’s
connection to the river,but it
runs on ashoestring budget,
so it’sfor the towntodecide
what theywant it to be.’’
The association will hold
another workshop for local
businessesinMarch,whereit
is hopedsome workinggroups
will be established to further
develop aKaiapoi brand
concept.
‘‘It’s time to do somereal
work.Wehave done enough
talking,’’hesays.‘‘It takes
threetofive years to developa
brandand we are in year
threethis year, so it’s time to
consolidateand see the return
on the effort we have put in
and drive it further.’’
He would like to see some
coordination around shop
opening hours, especially
given thegrowing number of
weekend visitors,which is
likelytoincrease when cycleway
connections to Christchurchopen
laterthis year.
‘‘If we want to be boutiquey,
peoplewant to do boutique
shopping at the weekend. The
case in point beingOxford.’’
He saysthe association’s
reach extends to Woodend,
Pegasus, Waikuku, The Pines
and Kairaki. It is keen to
encouragebusinessesinthose
areas to get involved and be
part of developing the brand.
It is alsolooking to organise
September events with
various partners,including
ethnicgroups, to reflect the
town’sgrowing cultural
diversity, adecade after the
2010 earthquake series.
‘‘The earthquake won’t be
mentioned.Itwill be about
how we have movedon. This
is where we wereand this is
where we are now.
‘‘Our demographicshave
changed rapidly in termsof
ethnicity, so the eventswill
reflect that. We are allabout
inclusiveness.’’
He saysthe associationhas
also taken the initiativeto
explore the feasibilityofa
the HurunuiDistrictCouncil in its
building department.
Atotal of 76 applications were
received from budding
apprentices whenapplications
closed last Friday.
The successful cadetwill finish
with aNational Diploma in
BuildingSurveying, after afouryear
The council’steam leaderin
BuildingControls, Kerry Walsh,
says the cadetship will givealegup
to someonestarting acareer
journey and also support the
industry.
“Buildingofficersare in very
shortsupply New Zealandwide.
It’s really important that we look at
the bigger picture and do ourpart
to put morequalifiedindividuals
out intothe local industry.
“It’s agreatcareer, and the cadet
role offers jobcompetency as well
as the official qualification.’’
Mr Walsh saysinthe past the
council had taken peopleonfrom
otherrelatedprofessionsand
trained them. ‘‘Now we are
offering aqualification from the
very beginning as well.”
This willbringtothree the
number of apprenticeships being
offered by the council. Two threeyear
apprenticeships have been
running in the Three WatersTeam
—the council’s water department
—since 2018.
Riki Pugh, from Cheviot, and
Ethan Dellaway, from Waipara,
will gain an industryrecognised
NZQA Level3Utilities Freshwater
Ethan says he has enjoyed
working in remotelocations
aroundthe district, meetingso
many local people and to have the
opportunity to workinthe
Hurunui district to gain a
qualification.
“The first year and ahalf is about
learning how the waterschemes
work and getting to know the
district.
‘‘The bookwork side of things
came nextand helpsunderstand
the theory as well. WhenIfirstsaw
the job Ithought it was agreat
opportunity to be close to home
and learn ausefultrade.”
Riki said he felt it was important
to learn by workingonthe job,
instead of sitting in aclassroom
fulltime.
“I’ve really valued making a
livingwhilelearning. It just seems
Hurunui District Council,
PO Box 13
Public Notices
Stopping of aPortion of Good Street, Rangiora
In exercise of the powercontained in Section319(1)(h) and Section 342(1)(a) of
the LocalGovernment Act 1974 and in accordance with the Tenth Schedule of the
Act, public notice is hereby given that the Waimakariri District Council proposes to
stop aportion of Good Street located between High Street and the Service Lane,
Section 1onSO539499.
Explanation
Section 1onSO539499 is used predominantly by members of the public for
pedestrian access and over time, the community has come to perceive this
portion of Good Street as being pedestrian centric. The Council has also received
feedback inrecent years from ratepayers expressing concerns that periodic use
of Section 1onSO539499 by vehicles represents ahazard to pedestrians.
Purpose
The Council proposes to retain ownership of Section 1onSO539499 as Local
Purpose Reserve. This portion of Good Street was ‘closed in’ anumber of
years ago with pedestrian focused features including the addition of park bench
seats and pavement tiles (instead of aformed road surface). Council intends
to undertake additional aesthetic enhancements in future consistent with its
pedestrian use if the road stopping processiscompleted.
Any future buildings or activities on the land once stopped will continue to be
governed by the Waimakariri District Plan.
Youcan get acopy of the report orinformation about this proposal (Stopping of
“Since Mum’s been here,
they’vediscoveredit’sbeenanythingbut quiet.
“I don’t thinkyou’d ever need to feel lonely here. It’s just like abig family andthere’salways
When shefirst arrivedather serviced apartment, Alma hadher husbandbyher side.Sadly,he
passed away shortlyafter duetoon-goinghealthissues. “I thought it might takeher alittlewhile to
deal withthe loss of dad and… thenew surroundings, but it wasquite amazingreally howquickly
Whilethe move wasabig decision, the wholefamily feel that Alma has“blossomed” sinceand
“She’sinvolvedherself in things that shehadn’tdone foryears,Choir.Exercising.
She’sjusttaken it with both hands, made friendsand it’s allbeenjustamazing.”
Mareeand Alma both admitthatthe stigma of retirementlivingput them off forlonger than it
needed to.“Ithinkmum wasjustsodelightedwhenshe came hereand realised howwelcoming
andhow well-run [the placewas]and what care washerefor her.Ithinkitwas an eye-opener,really.”
HavingAlmalivingathomewithher wouldhavebeenadream forMaree,but withthe realityof
workingall day, sheworried her mumwould be very bored. ButAlmahasn’thad time forboredom
Alma also fillsher time withacheekybit of cleaning, eventhoughshe doesn’tneed to liftafinger.
“I don’t thinkshe leaves alot forthe staff to clean, butthat’smum,” laughs Maree.
“It’sarelieffor us to know that she’staken care of.Dad wouldbesopleased to seeshe’s in a
