Sing Happy with Kate Dimbleby

Following a very successful workshop in Breckland

Libraries in January, Kate Dimbleby is returning to

Breckland in February and will be performing her new

show Sing Happy in various Breckland community

venues listed below. Sing Happy is sure to have you

singing and laughing along as Kate weaves classic

songs from the last 60 years, with stories about the

human voice and mesmerising layered vocals from

her critically acclaimed album, Songbirds. Following

the show, Kate will be back with us in March, touring

our library circuit again with a Sing Happy Workshop

where Kate will teach participants some of the songs

from the show. Kate was hugely popular when she

last toured with us, so please do get in touch to

reserve your place in advance.

These workshops and performances are part

of The Silver Social, an exciting daytime touring

arts programme, aimed at older people in rural

communities in Breckland. The project, which is run

by Breckland Council and funded by Arts Council

England and Breckland Council, brings something a

little different to daily life in towns and villages across

Breckland, Norfolk. Whether you want to meet new

people over a cuppa, take part in new social pursuits,

or you know a neighbour or family member who

might like to join a new group, we aim to bring high

quality accessible arts in a friendly, familiar space.

The Magpie Centre

Magpie Centre Gallops Into The New Decade

The New Year started well for the Magpie Centre, home

of West Norfolk Riding for the Disabled Association, with

the arrival of a new pony, plus some generous grants,

which will enable the Centre to expand its activities.

A grant of £4,233 from the Flux Family Fund through

the Norfolk Community Foundation will be used to train

two members of staff to deliver Equine Assisted Therapy

(EAT) sessions, designed for people with mental health

challenges. The EAT programme is scheduled to start

in June 2020. And to provide a secure workshop and

storage facility for the Centre’s maintenance equipment,

the Making a Difference Community Dividend awarded

the Centre £2,000.

The Magpie Coffee Morning week runs from Sunday

February 9, through Saturday February 15, so there’s still

time to get organized and hold yours. If you need advice

on how to host a coffee morning, or need posters/flyers

printed, we can help. Just call the Centre on 01553

810202. For your information, the West Norfolk Riding

for the Disabled Association Charity No is: 1143390.

Company no: 765610.

We have various daytime slots available for riders during

the week, especially on Mondays, so if you or anyone

you know has a physical and/or learning disability and

might like to take up riding, call 01553 8100202 and

request a rider application form. When this is completed

and returned, the participant will be invited to an

assessment, which is free of charge, and if they then

wish to book regular lessons, they will be slotted into a

group (maximum 4 riders) of similar ability.

West Norfolk Aviation Society

At the beginning of our meeting at the Mundford

Bowls Club on Tuesday the 7th, Mundford champion

of good causes, Rod Billen, began the evening’s

programme by announcing that, after a red-tape

dispute, his considerable efforts had not been in

vain and consent has been given for a permanent

memorial to be erected at the WW2 Lancaster

Bomber crash site in Thetford Forest (MR 52.493126

– 0.639661). An inaugural ceremony is to be held at

the site on 21st March at 1pm and all are invited to

attend this and the Bowls Club later, between 2pm

and 3pm, for tea and cakes.

After the raffle and bowls club banquet, Techie Fred

proposed the idea of registering the attendance of

members with the employment of a card reader

system. There were no formal objections to the

concept being trialled.

Fred preceded his own presentation by giving a

résumé of his personal interesting background and

then proceeded to illustrate, with the assistance of

‘Powerpoint’ and accompanying downloads, various

instruments, their advantages and weaknesses;

this included the pitot tube and the angle of attack

sensor.

Viewers were then invited to watch a cartoon

depicting a race between various animated antique

aeroplanes; it was easy for them to be recognised by

such a well-informed audience.

Fred’s final showing depicted a lone pilot of a light

passenger aircraft flying from Tampa Executive Airport

to St. Peters, Clearwater FL. This demonstrated

the intensity of concentration necessary to control

an aeroplane and, at the same time, maintain a

continual dialogue with air traffic control.

The evening ended peacefully and we were invited

to return to the venue next month, Tuesday the 4th,

to sample ‘David's Mystery Movie Night’.
