Meeting Gorbachev
UK/USA/Germany, 2018, 91 Mins.
DIRECTORS Werner Herzog & André Singer
CFF PG
Werner Herzog is an ardent admirer of former
Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, now in
his late 80s. Using a wealth of archive footage,
Herzog charts Gorbachev’s extraordinary rise to
power from humble beginnings. He also talks
with the former leader about his historic role in
bringing about the end of the Cold War and, more
controversially, the collapse of the Soviet Union.
How does Gorbachev view his achievements in
retrospect? A fascinating encounter which yields
poignant insights, both personal and political.
Thirty thousand square meters and 2,000 inmates,
half of them under 30 years old. The Baumettes
jail tells of misery, violence, abandonment, and
also hopes. It is a story of screams and silences,
a concentrate of humanity. This incredible
documentary, fi lmed in a fl y-on-the-wall style,
allows us to get up close, to catch an honest
glimpse of the reality of their lives, to get under
their skin as they get under ours.
Miles Davis: horn player, bandleader, innovator.
Elegant, intellectual, the very embodiment of cool.
The man with a sound so beautiful it could break
your heart. His restless determination to break
boundaries and live life on his own terms made
him a star. But it also made him incredibly difficult
to live with, for the people who loved him most.
Featuring never-before-seen archival footage,
studio outtakes, and rare photos, Miles Davis: Birth
of the Cool tells the story of a truly singular talent
and unpacks the man behind the horn.
