For the past three months, cuttings have been discovered in reserves around the area, specifically in Morgan’s and Sam’s gullies. There are concerns the green waste being dumped could be exotic plants and weeds, which may Graeme Fraser affect the native vegetation in these areas. Diamond Harbour reserves management committee chairman Graeme Fraser, who is also a resident, said he has recieved repeated reports of it happening. “If I see it happen from now on, I will have no hesitation of reporting it to the council.” Mr Fraser made a post on the Diamond Harbour, New Zealand Facebook page encouraging residents to be aware of regional and national warnings about protecting biodiversity. “Being the chair, I’ve got to see if I can appeal to people to look after their area.” Mr Fraser said volunteers who work in the reserves have noticed signs showing residents may be responsible. “It’s a bit crap if people think they can tip waste over their back fence and basically forget about it. “They get a weekly collection of their green bins, if it’s a lot then they should be taking it to the tip like everybody else. “One of the reasons people live in Diamond Harbour is because • HAVE YOUR SAY: If you have noticed people dumping green waste in reserves around Diamond Harbour, email jess.gibson@starmedia. kiwi its got really nice native vegetation and we would like to keep it that way.” City council acting manager of parks Al Hardy said staff have been made aware of the CALL FOR ACTION: Diamond Harbour residents are concerned about the dumping of green waste on public land. waste dumping activity through discussions with concerned residents. “Dumping of weeds in reserves can lead to ‘garden escapees’ which are a potential major source of weed infestation in our reserves. It’s very concerning for the natural values and the integrity of native habitats that our communities value,” he said. “We are working with local community members to help with this issue.” Call to conserve water on peninsula BANKS PENINSULA residents and visitors are being advised to save water as stream levels drop. The city council has set up electronic signage at the entrance to Akaroa and will be delivering flyers there and in Duvauchelle to remind people to be water-wise. Most water supplies in Banks Peninsula are fed by streams, which are usually at their lowest when summer demand is at its highest, putting a strain on the water supplies. City council head of three waters and waste Helen Beaumont said stream flows are expected to keep dropping with continued dry weather and rising temperatures forecast into February. “Please be mindful when using water – especially when watering gardens. Use a hand-held hose and only water plants for several minutes before 7am or after 9pm, when it’s cooler,” she said. “Avoid watering lawns and grass berms, and check all taps – inside and outside – for any leaks. If you spot a water leak on public land, please let us know so we can fix it quickly.” •
