While the health disadvantages are unquestionable,
the salivating flavor potential of instant
products lies far beyond that of a humble noodle
cup. Instant kitchen seeks to showcase the awesome potential of cooking
with these magical products. Their uncanny capability to emulate
exotic pan-Asian dishes at a fraction of the cost speaks to dreams of an
archaic past, where brilliant minds would dance with the occult and
brew alchemical concoctions in futile attempts to reach divinity. These
far-reaching aspirations of exploring the unreachable have since taken
root, permeating into the very foundation of the instant noodle industry.

Now, at the dawn of the twenty-first century, these lofty seeds have borne
a succulent fruit ripe for the picking. For years, the development of quality
broth mixes from Asian companies have gradually progressed to the point
of comparability to the real taste it seeks to emulate. With just a few minor
additions, the right brand of noodle can become a bonafide gourmet treat
in a snap.

Chef
some guy who likes noodles a whole lot:
Steve is not a chef. He has no culinary education nor
is he particularly confident in his cooking proficiency.
Yet, Steve shares the ambitions held by those timeworn
alchemists and alleged practitioners of conjuring. His
trial-by-error methods of culinary craftsmanship, lifelong
exposure to a multitude of Asian cuisines, familiarity with
instant noodle brands, and status as a destitute tertiary-education
student qualify him as the ideal consumer and
marketer of the Instant Kitchen mission. He has lived his
life relishing in the warm, satisfying aura of a transmuted
noodle, and wonders at the marvelous aptitude achieved in
a half-century’s worth of spectacular culinary engineering.
Good and authentic taste is not always easy to come by, but
Steve remains steadfast in faith of instant noodle’s satiating
effects and the ease at which anyone can achieve them.

Shin Ramyun dates back to the 1980s and
remains the most popular brand of South
Korean instant noodle. Over its 30 year
legacy Shin has accumulated a reputation for its
genuine spicy quality and has even become a common
staple outside of Asian grocery stores. The base stock
however, can become increasingly stale and milquetoast
with regular consumption, necessitating some culinary
upgrades to turn up the heat.
preparation
1. Bring water to boil in a medium soup
pot.
2. Add Shin Ramyun block. Cook for 2
minutes.
3. Remove noodles and strain ⅓ of the
water.
4. In a separate pan, gently sear steak to
desired level of doneness.
5. Add soup packet, soy sauce,
gochujang, cayenne, red pepper
flakes, mirin, and garnish packet. Stir
until combined.
6. Add sliced tofu, onion, and zucchini.
7. Cook for a further 5 minutes.
8. Reintroduce noodles. Cook for 5
minutes or until noodles are al-dente
and slightly translucent.
9. Serve in a large bowl. Garnish with
sesame oil.

Momofuku Ando’s revolutionary
instant noodle concept
stems from an innovative
approach to chemical dehydration. This process reduce as
much water content as possible from traditionally-produced
noodles, prolonging shelf life and the secret to their instant cooking
times. While older instant products utilize deep-frying to achieve this
effect, newer noodles have adapted to blow-drying techniques that reduce
the amount of calories consumed.

As an investigative concept, the beginnings of
alchemy predate modern science by many centuries.
It’s profound influence on experimentation
and discovery remains a profound progenitor of explorative
studies today. Individuals in contemporary society view these
past practices as potentially abhorrent and especially ignorant
of the the present’s stringency on logical standardization.
That being said, alchemists were conceived from a myriad of
locations across the ancient world. While many of them had dubious
intentions, the altruistic dreams of some cannot be denied. Great
men and women of learning had humble beginnings practicing alchemy,
prior to the accomplishment of their reputed discovery. These accomplishments
in turn, would have provided for advancements in healing,
wealth, and human control over material substances. Understanding the
properties of gas, the first isolation and recognition of an element, and
western production of porcelain all had roots in alchemical practices.
Even Isaac Newton himself was a prolific student of the occult. By the
18th and 19th century, the age of enlightenment had begun to streamline
and reorder countless scattered discoveries, ending the age of alchemy.
These explorers lacked the common language needed to truly form the
united will of discovery. Without this, these alchemists compensated
with references to mysticism and religious spirituality. As a result,
their work is often viewed under skeptic lenses, treated not as
the progenitors of modern science, but as blind visionaries
seeking the unattainable.

Ramen has been sold as a street food in
Japan for over a century, having been
an offshoot of a Chinese dish. Its popularity
as a cheap street food is often thanks to the
succulent broths it can be presented in, as well as the
myriad of optional toppings. Instant brands more often
than not have the quality of broth nailed down, but are
incapable of producing the similarly necessary toppings
without some external intervention.
preparation
1. Bring water to boil in a medium soup
pot.
2. Gently add egg to boiling water. Cook
for 3 minutes.
3. Remove egg and immediately place
in cold water.
4. Add Sapporo Ichiban noodle block to
boiling water. Cook for 2 minutes.
6. Cook for an additional 2 minutes, or
until noodles are al-dente.
7. Serve in a large bowl with sliced
chashu and vegetables.
8. Peel hard-boiled egg and slice in half.
9. Top with sesame oil, egg, and
narutomaki (if so desired).
5. Add corn, soup packet, red pepper

stock.

crafting a
philosopher’s stone
The elusive philosopher’s stone has had many different interpretations
amongst various cultures. Commonly though,
they are oft perceived as an effective method of prolonging
human life or allowing for the creation of gold and silver when combined
with lesser metals. For centuries however, alchemists were at a loss when
challenged with synthesizing the stone. Over time certain parameters
were established that offered some guidance in accomplishing this
impossible task. Known by the 16th century as the Magnum
Opus (the great work), these guidelines were separated into
three core stages:
I. Nigredo (The Blackening)
Necessitates the cleansing and
breakdown of alchemical materials
into its most basic form
II. Albedo (The Whitening)
Removal of corrupt elements to cleanse and
purify materials. Often cycling back and forth
with Nigredo until perfect purity is achieved.
III. Rubedo (The Redenning)
Opposing materials coalesce and manifest as a success.
Alchemists theorized the stone would appear as a dry, red powder, and had
experimented thoroughly with the classical elements of earth, air, water,
and fire to create it. Varying accounts also exist of the legend’s legitimacy.
14th century scribe Nicolas Flamel was famously credited posthumously
with achieving immortality through the stone, while 17th century Henning
Brand discovered the first periodic element phosphorus in an attempt to
synthesize the same thing by boiling-down urine. Although the existence of
this alchemical legend has been thoroughly debunked by modern chemistry,
its legend continues to enchant wonder.

Today alchemy is regarded as a relic of a distant, more primitive past. Despite
its intermingling with occult superstition however, these practices
taken on by mighty men and women have led to the foundation
of modern chemistry and scientific exploration.
Their centuries of wandering in the darkness
have now finally shone light upon a small

them, are sacred beneficiaries:
