A letter from the Curate
Dear Friends,
Christmas is nearly upon us and I have been merrily choosing Christmas
carols for our services in December. Something I have noticed particularly this
year is how many carols have the word ‘joyful’ in them.
Joyful is not always easy to be but is a fitting emotion, especially at this time of
year, for Christians when we celebrate the birth of Jesus.
That first Christmas the Angel Gabriel declared amazing, joyful news to
ordinary people, the shepherds; ‘I am bringing you good news of great joy for
all people; to you is born this day a Saviour, who is the Messiah, Christ the
Lord’. And the same is true today, that wonderful news is for us ordinary
people, too.
And goodness me don’t we need some good news!
This month already feels like ‘jolly’ might be elusive, with the particularly
dividing nature of the election and extreme weather conditions before we even
add in our own personal struggles and stresses.
But then Christmas will arrive, whether we are ready or not, with its beauty,
awe and wonder! We will hear once more of miracles and angels and heaven
touching earth, and of just how much God loves us.
However you will experience Christmas this year, church is, as always, here
for you. There are all sorts of different services and events in December to
help you celebrate and it will be really joyful for us all to be together at these!
And there’s also lots in January, too!
I hope very much to see you over the next few weeks and wish you a peaceful
and joyful Christmas.
With my love and prayers,
Rev Claire

Christingles - Lord, the Light of your Love is Shining
Advent Sunday marks the start of the festive season in our Church’s year
and, as usual, part of this was the Christingle Service, always an exciting
event. This year was no exception with many pupils from our Market Rasen
Church of England Primary School attending together with their siblings,
their parents and grandparents and many others, filling the Church with
hardly a pew unoccupied. Rev Claire led us through the service and, with
the help of some of the pupils, explained the meaning of the Christingle.
Pupils also led the prayers in the service, reminding us that Jesus whose
birth we mark at Christmas, teaches us to care for the wonderful world God
has given us and to share fairly its fruits with everyone, always
remembering those who are disadvantaged in any way. In this respect
particular emphasis was put on the work of The Children’s Society. The
Service reached its climax with the distribution of the Christingles to the
children, the lighting of the Christingle candles and the singing of the hymn
‘Walk in the Light’.
All the money collected by the pupils in their Collection Candles and all
other donations goes to support the work of The Children’s Society with
children who are disadvantaged in any way.

“You have a minute, Lord?” A sort of prayer ….
Lord, this is about guilt. You have a minute?
Parish News
I once read in the paper this article where a lady said that at the age of 40,
she gave up guilt. She decided to like herself a little more.
It starts so early, you see, Lord, the guilt. Often before you can read and write
or count to ten. And kindly teachers, if you are a bit slow in things make you
feel a mite guilty about it.
Now Lord, I’m not a fool – well no more than most and I know full well that
feeling bad about doing wrong is the main reason for doing right. And it
works. But what I’m on about is the clearing up of arrears.
A person does something against the law, gets caught, pays the fine or does
the time and it’s all done with. Clean slate, fresh start and so on. But it’s the
other kind of guilt, Lord. The odd bits that stick together and become a sack
on the back. Nowhere to pay the fine, nowhere to do the time. And you don’t
even have to be wicked to get a sack - anyone can get one – even nice
people who do nice things.
Guilt is a fungus, Lord. A sort of rot below the surface – like barnacles or
limpets. Little guilts cling on, hard-shelled and are joined by others. And a
person can get encrusted, heavy with it and it waters down all the enjoyment
of life. I know people do good things because of guilt. They give money to
things, join committees, create funds, look after older parents, start going to
church again. Part of the Master Plan, Lord? Good… but the others who
don’t do anything except live a half life feeling guilty. Is that so necessary?
Help me O Lord, to be like the lady in the paper. Help me to be free of the
sack. If not entirely free, to empty it a little? Help me to like myself a bit more.
One or two people think I’m not so bad. And on a good day, I can also stand
me. But most of the time, Lord, I could weep.
Look into it, Lord? At your convenience?
With thanks to David Kossoff.

Vacancy Update.
The Parish Profile has been submitted to the Diocese as
planned and after a few minor tweaks (nothing of the content
has changed) it has now been coupled with a Job Description
for the post of Rector which includes the specific requirements
set out by each of the four churches in the Benefice.
As of the 15 th November the final document has been
approved and signed off by the Archdeacon and the Clergy
Appointments team is now preparing the advertising process.
We wait to hear more in the weeks ahead.
Reordering Works.
Following our meeting with six members of the DAC (Diocesan Advisory
Committee) on the 5 th November there was general support for what we have
set out to achieve, with some aspects of preliminary design needing to be
reviewed or firmed up to reach the approval stage.
I have no concerns that the list of works we set out and included in our
consultation document can be attained. The next stage is about refining the
design to incorporate the outcome of the discussions in order to maintain the
integrity and history of our church.
Once the final scheme has been approved and costed it will be time to think
about fundraising. So if anyone can offer advice or assistance in working with
grant funding organisations please do not hesitate to make contact with me or
any member of the PCC.
Chris Middleton.
