COLOURFUL creatures,
multi-cultural children and
four of the major milestones
in the life of Jesus Christ have
been painted onto a mural to
brighten up Church Corner.
The eye-catching mural,
located outside St Peter’s
Anglican Preschool, was
finished by medical laboratory
science student Susannah
Blummont and artist Ivey
Vinson last week.
Miss Blummont, who grew
up in Redwood, designed a
large proportion of the 25m by
1.9m mural.
She collaborated with Miss
Vinson who finished the last
section of the artwork.
The mural, which has been
in the making since early
December, aims to express
unity.
“We wanted an iconic mural
that would stand out to people.
Whatever walk of life they
were in they could relate,” Miss
Blummont said.
Heavy
disturb
war vet
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
EVERY NIGHT before bed Dave
Thompson and his wife Catherine
take magnesium to help them to
sleep.
The 76-year-old “hardly sleeps
at night” due to the “crash, banging
sound” of vehicles travelling
past his home on Waterloo Rd.
The frequent stream of trucks
has been an ongoing issue since
the February 22, 2011, earthquake
– but has increased in the last two
years.
Mr Thompson, who formerly
served in the New Zealand Army
for 25 years – including in
Vietnam for one year as a section
commander, said the heavy
vehicles have largely impacted his
life and he has not slept properly
since the earthquakes.
“These trucks remind me of the
war with the crashing and banging
. . . it is like a flashback.”
Mr Thompson, who served
on the front line, said the noise
of fireworks also increases the
frequency of flashbacks.
Council supports plan
to increase landfill levies
THE CITY Council is supporting
a move by the Government
to increase the levy rates for
landfills.
It has made a submission on
the Ministry for the Environment’s
Reducing Waste: A More
Effective Landfill Levy consultation
document, saying it wants
the Ministry to consider going
further because it is worried
about the increasing levels of
waste going to landfill.
The Ministry announced late
last year that it is proposing to
increase the levy on landfills that LANDFILL: Dumping waste at the Styx Mill Eco Drop could cost more if a Government plan to
take household waste. Currently increase levies goes ahead.
The Ministry is also proposing “New Zealand’s level of costs of disposal (levy) as well tivise diversion from landfill.
Its submission also says a uni-
But the council is also calling
In Brief
INTERSECTION DECISION
A plan to change the Ilam/
Middleton/Riccarton Rd
intersection from a dangerous
junction to a T-intersection
to reduce crashes could be
approved today. City council
staff will present a report to the
board requesting it endorses its
preferred design of restricting
the use of Middleton Rd at the
intersection by changing access/
egress to left in, left out, and
changing Ilam Rd and Middleton
Rd to a ‘T’ intersection.
POOL REOPENED
Jellie Park Recreation and
Sport Centre’s recreation pool
reopened on Saturday after the
tank tiles were repaired. Said
a Christchurch City Council
spokeswoman: “The Jellie Park
recreation pool was repaired
and reopened to the public on
Saturday, 25 January.” A city
council memo last week said the
pool tank was relined due to a
significant number of tiles failing
and customers and staff receiving
cuts to their feet.
FREE FRUIT ON NEW MAP
The city council has released a
new online map revealing where
people can find free fruit and
nuts across the city. In total,
there are 122,741 council-owned
trees in Christchurch and Banks
Peninsula. Of these, 6846 are fruit
Styx Mill serial
flasher warned
• By Sophie Cornish
MEMBERS OF the public and
police have combined to find a man
exposing himself at the Styx Mill
Reserve.
The 19-year-old was caught by a
police dog patrol in the reserve on
January 26.
It followed more than 10 reported
sightings of the man, often doing
an indecent act, over three weeks,
Christchurch North Community
Patrol chairman Sam Hall said.
A police spokeswoman said the
man was arrested and given a precharge
warning.
The warning is an alternative to
prosecution for offenders who have
committed offences with a maximum
penalty of no more than six
months imprisonment.
Police use discretion to not
prosecute, even though there is sufficient
evidence to do so.
“It’s quite ironic that the dogs
found him in the dog park,” Mr
Hall said.
A woman, who didn’t wish to be
named, said her teenage daughter
and another teenage family member
were out walking on a track off
Hussey Rd, when the man, with his
pants down, began following them.
“When they looked around he kept
hiding behind bushes,” she said.
Mr Hall said his patrol group,
which has about 30 volunteers, had
been monitoring the area during its
daytime and evening patrols.
Funding package ‘a slap in the face’
• By Louis Day
CITY COUNCILLORS say
Canterbury has received a
“slap in the face” over the
Government’s $12 billion
nationwide infrastructure
package.
The North
Island will
receive the
majority of
the funding,
with $3.48
billion spent
Sam
MacDonald
in Auckland,
$991 million in
Waikato and
the Bay of Plenty, $692 million
in Northland and $1.35 billion
on Wellington.
Canterbury will get $159
million and Queenstown, the
only other South Island area
to receive any funding, will get
$90 million. The $249 million
allocated towards the South
Island is less than the $692
million put aside for a single
road in Northland, a 22km fourlane
corridor from Marsden
Point to Whangarei.
City councillor Sam
MacDonald described this as a
“slap in the face.”
“I think Christchurch and
Canterbury, in general, deserves
better, the reality is we are still
recovering from the earthquakes,”
he said.
City councillor Aaron Keown
also described it as a slap in the
face.
The package for Canterbury
includes upgrades to more than
100 schools across the region, six
transport and roading related
projects, and building upgrades
to Hillmorton Hospital’s mental
health unit.
Christchurch Central Labour
MP Duncan Webb thought
UPGRADE:
Part of the
$159 million
allocated to
Canterbury’s
infrastructure
will go towards
building
improvements
to Hillmorton
Hospital’s
mental health
unit.
it was “churlish” to label the
infrastructure injection as a slap
in the face.
“To say that is a bit of a slap in
the face is unfair, because one
thing that needed to happen
was for Canterbury, both at a
regional and city level, to come
to Government with proposals
that work,” he said.
City councillor Sara Templeton
contested this.
“The New Zealand Transport
NOR’WEST NEWS
Agency are funding our business
cases for transport projects but
they shelved it, that is not on us
[city council],” she said.
City councillor and chairman
of the urban development and
transport committee Mike Davidson
labelled the funding as a
“knee-jerk reaction.”
“This seems to be a knee-jerk
reaction to people who moan
and complain. We have been
trying to get this boost for a while
and because we don’t moan and
complain we get left behind,” he
said.
Minister for Greater
Christchurch Regeneration
and Labour MP Megan Woods
said the cash injection into
the region would help prepare
Canterbury for the future.
“Canterbury is of course in
a unique position because our
earthquake recovery necessitated
major infrastructure investments
in our roads, hospitals
and schools. For example over
the last decade, more than $1.4
billion has already been spent
on Christchurch motorways
projects. Today’s announcement
adds to the investments already
made,” she said.
The funding announcement
was made by Prime Minister
Jacinda Ardern and Minister
of Finance Grant Robertson on
Wednesday.
BIBLICAL: A colourful mural outside St Peter’s Anglican
Preschool was finished this week.
Multiculturalism showcased
• From page 1
She said the goal was to make
passers-by’s day and hoped they
would be able to find something
inspirational and peaceful in the
mural they could relate to.
The mural is broken up into
several sections. The first part
features four key scenes from the
life of Jesus – the nativity scene,
Jesus walking on water, his death
and resurrection.
The next stage of mural was
inspired by Noah’s Ark with both
native animals including kiwis,
takahes and animals significant
to other cultures such as giraffes,
elephants, a peacock and a panda
in a kowhai tree in the painting.
Because the preschool is multilingual
– teaching English, Te
Reo Maori and Chinese, the artwork
showcases children of many
multicultural backgrounds.
Studying a four-year degree in
medical laboratory science at the
Auckland University of Technology,
Miss Blummont is currently
boarding with a family which
runs the Manukau Christian
Charitable Trust.
The trust establishes Christian
pre-schools and collaborated with
the St Peter’s Anglican Church
to open the St Peters Anglican
Preschool in August.
While she was home for the
summer holidays, Miss Blummont,
who enjoys art as a hobby,
was asked if she wanted to do the
project before Miss Vinson was
brought in to help out.
While Miss Blummont wasn’t
quite sure what she had got herself
into, she “gave it a whirl” and
was pleased with the end results.
“It is not something I ever
dreamed I would be doing. The
biggest painting I have ever done
in my life was A1.”
Petition calls for action over trucks
• From page 1
On top of putting up with the
constant noise of the trucks, he
has been battling prostate cancer
for the past four years.
Mr Thompson cannot even
open his windows as a result of
the dust caused by the heavy
trucks and need to get their house
cleaned every three months with
a chemical wash.
But he and his wife are not the
only residents suffering.
It is why Mr Thompson has
spearheaded a petition signed by
more than 66 residents calling
for action over the heavy vehicles
which use the road 24/7.
The petition will be presented
to the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board at its
meeting on February 18.
The opening of the Waterloo
Business Park and trucking firms
in the area have intensified the
issue over the past two years.
The main issue is the heavy
vehicles that are short-cutting
through Waterloo Rd to avoid
having to use Main South Rd and
Carmen Rd, Mr Thompson said.
Data collected by residents in
April showed heavy vehicles were
often using Waterloo Rd every
five to 10 minutes.
Waterloo Rd between
Racecourse Rd and Pound Rd
and between Barters Rd and
Kirk Rd is a collector road while
between Pound Rd and Barters
Rd is a minor arterial.
“All types of vehicles including
large trucks are permitted to
use collector roads. Only overdimension
vehicles are subject
to special permits,” a council
spokesman said.
But Waterloo Rd resident Russell
Wills said vehicles over 44 tonnes
are travelling up the road and that
is what residents want to stop.
He agreed the biggest impact
the trucks were having on
residents was lack of sleep and
quality of life.
The petition also calls for a
pedestrian crossing to be put on
Waterloo Rd and raises concerns
over Hornby Primary School,
Barnardos Early Learning and
Hornby High School being located
on the road.
DISTURBED: Waterloo
Rd resident Dave
Thompson says heavy
vehicles passing hs
home are affecting his
quality of life.
Other suggestions residents
made was for traffic lights to be
installed on the intersection of
Waterloo and Gilberthorpes Rd.
A city council spokesman said
a new signalled crossing will be
provided near Hei Hei Rd later
this year.
Greater Hornby Residents’
Association chairman Marc Duff
said it will work to support the
residents to progress their safety
concerns.
Mr Duff said with the new
Hornby Library, South West
Centre and Pool opening,
Hornby Primary increasing its
roll and the South Express
Major Cycle Route under way
it would be a good opportunity
to get everything addressed at
the same time.
State of the art materials used at school
CATHOLIC Cathedral College’s
new office, administration and
classroom building is being
constructed using resilient,
sustainable systems, with timber
at its core.
Cross laminated timber,
known as CLT, forms the threestorey
$5.6 million building’s
structural framework and this is
just the beginning.
Catholic Cathedral College is
an integrated Catholic co-educational
secondary school. It was
founded in 1987 but its origins
go back more than 150 years.
The college is an amalgamation
of two schools – Sacred Heart
College for girls and Xavier College
for boys and today has a roll
of 460.
Catholic Education Office
manager Mike Nolan said the
urgent message of Pope Francis
relates to the need to care for our
common home.
“Cross laminated timber
brings a huge advantage to the
environment through efficient
application of the world’s most
sustainable, renewable, building
resource – wood. The primary
environmental benefit of this
type of construction, over a
more conventional steel and
concrete solution, is the reduced
greenhouse emissions associated
with the construction materials,”
he said.
CONSTRUCTION: Catholic Education Office manager Mike
Nolan and Catholic Cathedral College principal Tony Shaw in
front of a new cross-laminated timber school building being
constructed.
Timber construction materials
have lower embodied carbon
than traditional construction
materials, which is a measure
of the sum of all the emissions
generated during the manufacture
of the building products
and materials used in the new
building.
Wood takes in carbon dioxide
straight from the atmosphere
as the trees grow, resulting in a
small carbon footprint, whereas
steel and concrete have high
embodied carbon that cannot be
offset.
Said Mr Nolan: “Figures we
have received for a hypothetical
similar building using steel and
concrete on the level one and
level two floors, shows a net
increase of approximately 334
tonnes of carbon compared with
cross-laminate timber. Using
wood means a negative total
carbon footprint of 160 tonnes,
while steel and concrete would
add 174 tonnes to the environment.
“In simple terms it equates to
taking 110 standard cars off the
road for one year,” he said.
Work commenced on the new
WSP-designed building in July
and is expected to take a year
to construct. The building will
include a new administration,
reception, offices and staffroom
on the ground floor; four teaching
spaces and offices on the first
floor and the same on the second
floor.
The building will also feature
a heat recovery mechanical
ventilation system, low energy
lighting and elevator, and a high
rated thermal envelope reducing
the energy use of the building
when in operation.
Timber, in this application,
provides a resilient structural
solution, that is expected to sustain
minimal structural damage
following a major earthquake,
further adding to its sustainability.
“While the use of timber
in mid-rise commercial/
educational buildings is well
established in Europe, it is an
emerging technology type in
New Zealand, and we are excited
about timber’s resilience and
efficiency,” Mr Nolan said.
Free refills
to combat
plastic waste
GRAHAM CONDON Recreation
& Sport Centre is amongst
the Canterbury businesses aiming
to cut down plastic pollution
by providing free water bottle
refills.
The centre, along with Jellie
Park , Taiora QEII and Pioneer
Recreation & Sport Centre has
joined the network of RefillNZ
stations.
RefillNZ is a non-profit organisation
that enlists hospitality
outlets around the country
to allow visitors to fill up their
reusable water bottles from the
tap for free.
It provides a poster and stickers
to participating businesses
letting people know that water
refilling is available on site. The
network also provides information
about the location of public
drinking fountains.
RefillNZ founder Jill Ford said
66 cafes, hotels, vineyards, i-sites
and other hospitality businesses
are now involved in the initiative
across Canterbury, including
The Store in Tai Tapu, and
Laneway Espresso on Durham St.
Three campaigners are working
for RefillNZ to introduce new
outlets to the scheme with a goal
of signing up 150 sites around the
region this year.
I've been running a bespoke software development company in
Christchurch since the end of 2018. One of my biggest struggles has always
been to find reliable and talented developers to help me with projects
when things get busy. I originally reached out to the team at Vision
College to do some mentoring. I mentioned my struggles and they put me
in contact with one of their students, Declan.
Declan has been such a help, his ability to be productive right
away and the ease in which he picked up new concepts was
impressive. It really is a testament to the fact that vision
college isn't just teaching specific technologies and theory,
but rather empowering their students to become lifelong
learners. In the software development industry, you never
stop learning. There is always something new and better,
and Declan has really proven himself more than capable of
keeping up. I look forward to a long term relationship with
Vision College and am already talking to another student
there to help more.
Online map
for free fruit
A NEW online food map
reveals where people can find free
fruit and nuts growing in public
spaces in the north-west and
wider city.
City council’s smart city
manager Michael Healy said
there is an abundance of fruit and
nut trees growing on public land
across the city.
“In total, there are 122,741
city council-owned trees
in Christchurch and Banks
Peninsula. Of these, 6846 are fruit
or nut-producing trees.
“Our new ‘fruit trees’ feature
on SmartView presents a map
that shows urban food foragers
the location of fruit and nut trees
on offer in Christchurch’s public
spaces,” Mr Healy said.
More than 52 types of trees
feature on the map, with the most
common being plum, European
beech, crab apple, Irish strawberry
tree, pear, walnut, honey locust
and sweet chestnut.
Within days of going live,
the online map has attracted
thousands of views.
Plans are already under way
to add more details about the
trees such as harvest times, an
image of trees and useful links
to help people identify and enjoy
this free food growing in the
Borrowers rack up overdue
library book fees
• By Louis Day
LIBRARIES collected $315,916 in
fines for overdue, damaged and
lost books last year.
A staggering 4,734,658 books
were issued which is an increase
from the 4,664,676 books issued
in 2018 and $292,946 in fines
dished out in that year.
The city council currently has
$235,745 worth in outstanding
fines.
This comes as the city council
revealed the most issued book
of 2019 was British author Lee
Child’s Past Tense which is the
23rd book in the Jack Reacher
series. The crime thriller novel
series follows former American
military policeman, Jack Reacher,
who wanders throughout the
United States.
Child’s The Midnight Line,
which is the 22nd book in the series,
came in as the second most
issued book of last year.
Adults are charged 70c per day
for overdue books with a $21
maximum fine per item.
City council head of libraries
and information Carolyn
Robertson said the money from
fines was put into the libraries
general fund which helped offset
expenditure.
She said when an individual
with an adult membership returns
an overdue book to the
library, the fine is automatically
added to their membership record.
“If the fine is not paid within
one month, or the customer has
fines owing of $30 or more, then
the customer cannot borrow any
more items until such time the
fine is paid,” she said.
Ms Robertson said debt collection
agencies become involved
when fines exceed $30 and once an
item becomes 62 days overdue.
She said with lost or damaged
items individuals are charged the
total cost of the item, plus a $21
processing fee.
“A recovery fee is only charged
once an outstanding debt is
referred to a debt collection
agency.”
Canty player selected in
national softball squad
• By Jacob Page
SOFTBALLER Jacob
Davidson is the lone
Canterbury face named in
the Junior Black Sox squad
for next month’s under-18
World Cup in Palmerston
North.
The 16-year-old Riccarton
High School student,
who plays baseball for
Selwyn as a pitcher said
he was surprised by the
call-up.
“There’s been a lot of
work that has gone in
behind the scenes so to
make it in this team for
the first time is great.”
The event begins on
February 22, with the Junior
Black Sox opening the
tournament against Japan,
the silver medallist at the
last World Cup.
The final will be played
on March 1.
Jacob is also a national
representative in baseball
as a pitcher, he says juggling
both sports has
mostly a positive impact
on his play.
“When I’m catching (in
softball) I’m still working
with the pitchers on calling
a game and working
Jacob Davidson
out what pitches to throw,
just like I would be if I was
pitching in baseball.
“It does mean I don’t get
many days off.”
Jacob focuses on softball
on Monday, Wednesday
and Saturday and switches
to baseball for his Selwyn
club on a Thursday and
Sunday.
Twelve teams from
around the world will
SPORT
compete in the week-long
World Cup event.
Fellow Cantabrians
Hunter Simpson and
Kotiti Patea will be nontravelling
reserves.
Coach Thomas Makea
said he was excited by the
talent on show.
“We have set goals and
observed these athletes
over the past 12 months,
which culminated at the
just-completed under-18
nationals.
“They displayed their
skills, but also a lot of
enthusiasm, passion and
intensity to their games,
which is something that
the management team was
pleased to see.
“We have selected a
well-balanced squad with
a lot of these players able
to play multiple positions
which helps in the makeup
of the defence. The
team will be working hard
over the next few weeks so
they are well prepared to
take on the world.”
Kebabs to make your mouth water
Grilled Chilean Beef Kebabs
with Chimichurri Sauce and
Coriander Rice is an easy,
flavourful any-day meal.
Substitute button mushrooms
for the beef for a vege
alternative. If going low-carb,
use cauliflower rice and if
coriander isn’t your thing then
serve with your favourite
sauce and rice side-dish
Grilled Chilean Beef Kebabs
with Chimichurri Sauce and
Coriander Rice
Makes 8 kebabs
Ingredients
1kg beef – tenderloin, ribeye
or sirloin, cut into 4cm cubes
(or substitute 500g button
mushrooms)
2 Tbsp oil
2 Tbsp lime juice, plus zest of one
lime
2 garlic cloves – finely minced
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp dried oregano or thyme
1 tsp cumin
1½ tsp salt
½ tsp pepper
Skewer additions: cherry
tomatoes, onion
Chimichurri Sauce
1 bunch coriander
½ cup olive oil
2 Tbsp lime juice
1 jalapeno (use less, or more if
you like)
½ cup chopped onion
1 garlic clove
½ tsp smoked paprika
½ tsp salt
Coriander Rice
2 cups water
1 cup rice, rinsed
pinch salt
¼ cup coriander- chopped
3 spring onions – chopped
1 lime
Garnish: lime wedges
Directions
Soak eight 25cm wooden skewers
in warm water.
Cut the beef into cubes and
place in a zip lock bag or in a
medium bowl.
Mix oil, lime juice and zest,
garlic, spices, salt and pepper in a
small bowl. Pour over the beef and
seal the bag, shaking and mixing
so all the beef is coated. Set aside.
Pre-heat a hotplate, BBQ or your
favourite skillet if it’s large enough.
In a medium pot, add water and
rice, bring to a boil. Cover, simmer
on low heat for 20min.
In the meantime, make the
chimichurri. Place all the ingredients
in a food processor, and
pulse repeatedly (10-15 times)
until the coriander and onion are
all minced well. It need not be
smooth, but more like the consistency
of pesto. Place in a small
bowl. Set aside.
Make the skewers alternating
beef, cherry tomato, onion slice,
then repeat until skewer is full.
3-4 pieces of beef on each skewer.
Grill the skewers over medium
high heat, rotating until meat
is nicely charred and cooked to
desired done-ness.
Place rice in a bowl, squeeze
with lime, and scatter the
coriander and green onions over
the top. Serve immediately.
HEALTH & AWARENESS
NOR’WEST NEWS
Joint pain: Do I have arthritis or
could it be mainly my muscles?
The team at Physical Sense in Sydenham sees clients with
a range of symptoms but many of their middle-aged and
senior clients visit complaining of pain in one of their joints.
Physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk suggests
that a major part of the pain could be due
to muscle pain rather than simply arthritis.
“Even if an x-ray shows arthritis, the reason
for the pain may be the muscles around
the joint,” she explains. The images show
how a muscle knot (the crosses) in a back
muscle can give hip pain (aches and pain
are the red areas in the drawings), a knot
in a muscle on the back of the shoulder
blade can give a deep pain in the front of
the shoulder and a muscle knot all the way
near the groin can give an ache in the knee
(especially at night in bed).
Ietje recalls one case where an 89 year
old client with severe arthritis who walked
with a stick, told her, “I will end up in
a wheelchair, I cannot put any weight
through my right leg due to pain in my hip
and buttock”. “Within 4 treatments, she
was walking with her stick but without the
severe pain,” says Ietje. “The arthritis was
one of the factors that made her muscles
spasm but the other was that older people
move less and the flexed position the hip
is in when we sit is particularly bad for
the hip.” Ietje is happy with the fact that
although the client was 89 and could have
been “given up on” or told to live with the
pain, she made a difference to her health
and wellbeing.
The same lack of movement can be the
reason for your knee pain or your shoulder
pain and the same few treatments could
make a huge difference for you.
At Physical Sense, hands-on techniques
(massage and triggerpoint deactivation
techniques) are used to release the muscles.
The client also gets a home exercise
program designed to mobilize and stretch
the joint, strengthen the important core
muscles and increase general strength and
balance. They teach a movement sequence
SHOULDER
PAIN
KNEE PAIN
(the crosses are the areas of the muscle spasms, the red areas is where the pain is felt)
that stretches the joint in all directions
whilst the client is able to lie safely on their
bed, perfect for older or less mobile clients.
In many cases having the muscles
released and being taught how to maintain
it, is enough to stay on top of the problem.
If severe arthritis is the underlying cause,
HIP PAIN
some maintenance therapy may be
necessary, but that is often more affordable
and, for older patients, better tolerated
than surgery. After only one treatment you
should know that it will work for you. Call
them before 15 February and save $50.00
on that treatment.
Physical Sense Gym and Physio is located at 300 Colombo Street, Sydenham. The Blue Line Bus stops in front of the door
and there is ample parking. To enquire about joint pain treatment, phone 377-2577 or visit www.triggerpoints.co.nz
