Some participants may have left empty-handed, but no one left with an empty stomach as Orland Township hosted its annual Souper Bowl Challenge on Saturday, Feb. 1. The event was held with 16 competitors in four categories — Rookies, Public Service Pro Bowlers, Senior Hall of Famers, Culinary MVPs — and all proceeds benefited the Orland Township Food Pantry. Contestants also made extra batches of their specialty soups to be donated to local soup kitchens and shelters. “We’ve got raffles, split-the-pot and football squares to go with the Super Bowl theme,” Orland Township Administrative Assistant Lindsay Trost said. “All the proceeds go to the food pantry, and all of our contestants made an additional batch of soup, which we are bringing to Daybreak in Joliet. It’s fun. The soup kitchen will also host its own little Souper Bowl Challenge and let the people there vote for their favorite soups.” Along with competing for the coveted Golden Ladle award in each category, the chefs also were judged for Best Decorations — for their table design and theme — and a people’s choice award was voted on by all in attendance. “We have some new unique soups,” Trost said. “I was trying Felicitas Cortez from the Orland Park Diane Hamil, of New Lenox, hands a sample of her Football Soup to Patrick Hastings, of Frankfort, on Saturday, Feb. 1, during Orland Township’s Souper Bowl Challenge. You’ve got to love your chicken noodles and tomato soups, but it’s nice to spice it up a little bit.” The chamber competed in the Public Service Pro Bowlers category against David Hardy, of Smith Crossing, and Illinois State Sen. Michael Hastings, the latter of whom served beef Maria Rosa made by his staff member Nora “Golden Ladle” Gruenberg. Charles Johnson, Suzanne Law, and the duo of Tina Zekich and Angela Greenfield were featured in the Rookie category, and the Senior Hall of Famers included Bill Brady, Diane Hamil, Bill Hurley and Mary Lu Wasniewski. Several area restaurants went head-to-head in the Culinary MVPs division, including The Ashford House, Chuy’s, Gatto’s, Georgios, Rubino’s and Traverso’s. Orland Park residents Diane Graf, Annivar Salgado and Carol Mozwecz were all impressed by Georgios’ cream of chicken and rice. “I just thought it was perfect,” Graf said. “It was so good. The texture was good. The taste was good. I liked it a lot.” Salgado echoed the enthusiasm, saying, “I’m with her. My favorite was the Georgios cream of chicken with rice for two reasons. One, the flavor, and there [were] little pieces of chicken throughout the whole soup, the flavors were good. Two, it was creamy, but not super creamy, and it just stuck with me.” Mozwecz agreed, though she said she also enjoyed Ashford House’s cream of chicken and rice, and declared it a tie. Chef Don Kantowski of Georgios explained that a finishing touch is the secret to the crowd-pleasing soup. “We have cream of chicken with rice,” Kantowski said. “It’s a little twist on it. We finish it with a little bit of lemon, and it really makes the flavor a little bit lighter and a little bit different than your typical heavy soup.” Celebrity judges NBC Storm Team meteorologist Andy Avalos and Star 96.7 Morning Show hosts Kevin Kollins and Brooke Hunter had the tough job of determining which soups reigned supreme. In the end, the coveted Golden Ladles were awarded to Tina Zekich and Angel Greenfield’s leek, potato and spinach soup in the Orland Parkers (left to right) Adam Alomari, Laith Rahahleh and Kamal Elebaid toast to Felicitas Cortez’s Asian noodle soup with quail egg. But Hastings said he felt like he won just by spending the day with the community at Orland Township. “They have the best senior services in the south suburbs, no doubt about it,” he said. “Whether it’s hosting Senior Speed Dating or Dancing with the Stars or Senior Idol, Orland Township is something to be respected and looked up to in the Township community. … If you look around, everyone’s happy. Everyone is eating soup, and the Super Bowl is tomorrow. This is a great kick-off.”
