Ray, the television series Scandal, and recent Cars3, her acting career has been highly acclaimed fordramatic prominence and strength of character. Herstart, though, was through her local Club’s arts program,and the guidance of a dance tutor. “I will neverforget that the Club was where I learned to speak upfor myself. I discovered that I had a voice, and thatno one could take that away from me. But more thanthat, I was cared for.”YOUTHOF THEYEARSteve Largent with his wife and grandkids.Steve Largent hails from Tulsa, Oklahoma. A retiredprofessional football player and politician, his careerfor the Seattle Seahawks as a legendary wide receiversaw career and long-standing records for catches,receptions, and touchdowns. Named to the NFL Hallof Fame, and as a NFL Man of the Year, his legacyas a humanitarian and leader have been recognizedaround the country. For a kid struggling to stayfocused in school, though, he speaks praisingly of theClub staff who helped him complete his homework,and stay out of trouble. “I had to learn that all the negativecomments you hear from others don’t matter. Ihad to see that there were positive models who caredabout whether I succeeded or not. They made me getmy work done.”Club alumni can be found throughout every community,making a positive difference. Generals,actresses, congressmen, and football players—someare business owners and leaders, others are athletesor performers, still others are engaged in civic life orraising a family. If you take a moment to ask a Clubalumni how they got to where they are, the life storieswill vary and personal interests will be different, butseveral aspects are constant. The Club was my home.The Club was where I was cared for. The Club staffhad high expectations for me and gave me encouragement.The Club was where I could be myself.
