Complimentary Legion
memberships for RCMP
On February 1, the BC/Yukon Legion
marked the 100th anniversary of the
RCMP with a complimentary one-year
membership to first-time, serving and
retired RCMP. For the last 100 years, members
of the RCMP have faithfully served in
our communities, risking their lives every
single day in order to keep our province
and territory safe. It is because of sacrifices
like these that the Legion continues to exist
today.
The Legion is committed to supporting
the RCMP, locally through Legion branches
and provincially
through programs
supporting physical
and mental wellness.
Our service
officers are here to
assist serving and
retired RCMP members
with obtaining
benefits from Veterans
Affairs Canada.
Poppy funds from our annual campaign
are also available in the case of an emergency.
These services are available to serving
and retired RCMP officers regardless of
Legion membership.
We are honoured by the current serving
and retired RCMP members who are a part
of our organization and the way they continually
give back to their communities.
“This year, as a show of our appreciation,
we are offering a one year free membership
to serving and retired RCMP who are joining
the Legion for the first-time. Membership
includes a warm community welcome,
access to member benefits and a one year
subscription to Legion Magazine,” said Val
MacGregor, president of the BC/Yukon
Command of the Royal Canadian Legion.
Serving and retired RCMP members
joining the Royal Canadian Legion
for the first-time are eligible to register
online for their free one year membership
by going to www.legion.ca/join-us/
NELSON
Oakley
Meet Belle, a beautiful, confident gray and white kitty who
loves attention from people. At 7 months old, she works off
her kittenteen energy running zoomies around the house and
playing with all kinds of toys. She needs room for all this and a
tall cat tree to climb on. Then once she tires, you can relax with
her, because she also loves snuggling on your lap and showing
you how much she loves you. Belle would love a family of her
own. She’s very easy around everyone including other cats. This
one is hard to resist.
BC SPCA Nelson Branch
sponsored by
Oakley is a wonderful lab mix. He’s about 1 1/2-years-old. He’s
friendly, active, and likes to bark to say hello. He’s good with children,
but is a goofy guy so it’s best if the children are very comfortable
around dogs. His manners on leash need work, but with some basic
obedience training, Oakley has all the makings of being the perfect
outdoor companion. He’s had no experience around cats or other
dogs that we know of so at this moment, we are not quite sure how
he’d be. If you would like to meet Oakley then come down to the
West Kootenay BCSPCA in Castlegar and meet him today!
Michael Stuart McMillin
November 20, 1953 - December 13, 2019
Michael was born and raised in Saanich,
BC, the youngest of 4 sons born to Alfred
and Margaret McMillin. He was blessed
with a stable childhood, complete with
a “100 acre woods” in which to play and
the ocean and beaches were never far.
Being the youngest sibling and often
the smallest amongst childhood friends,
he learned to compete by his wits and
powers of observation. In his teenage
years and beyond he did much hiking up
island, spending time at all the not-yetbusy
coastlines…the West Coast Trail.
He attended the University of Victoria
and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in
Psychology in 1975. It was there he met
his wife-to-be Arlene, who was taking the
same program. They married in 1977 in
the McMillin gardens and moved to the
Slocan Valley in 1978 where they lived for
many years on their beautiful land, on the
back road of Slocan Park. Michael worked
the land…creating gardens, rock walls,
and many creations from wood. It was
often said the place looked like a park.
He enjoyed his early years learning and
playing in the rapids with his whitewater
skills. He was an instructor in the art of
the canoe. Rivers and lakes all beckoned.
There were fish to find, beaver wood to
collect, berries and mushrooms to pick.
It was a good life in the valley.
Michael acquired his family’s logical
mind. He knew his way around
construction, starting with work he did
on the island and then in the Kootenays.
He worked for many years in social work
for the Provincial Government all over
the West Kootenay region, where he
honed his understanding of the human
condition.
Michael enjoyed NHL hockey, card
games, telling stories and his many
motorcycle adventures.
He had a good sense of humour plus
a passion for the British dramas and
Nordic Noir.
He was a kind and generous man and
was often the first to offer a helping hand
– generally without having to be asked –
and was the last to ask for help for himself.
Michael suffered in the last years of his
life with a neurological disorder.
Michael is forever loved and cherished in
the hearts of many including:
His wife of 46 years, Arlene, and his
family: brothers Doug, Ron (Nan).
Nieces and nephews: Paul (Beth)
McMillin, Christa (Rob) McMillin, Leah
(Corey) Smith, Ange (Mack) Friesen,
Tammy (Dylan) Gunning, Wayne
McMillin, Erik (Nikki) Peterson, Kevin
Peterson.
Grandnieces: Charlotte Peterson,
Bronwyn and Zoe McMillin, Sarah and
Breanne Smith, Mikayla Langer, Arcadia
Gunning, Rachel and Emily McMillin.
Grandnephews: Zach Langer, Oscar and
Wyatt Friesen, Perrin Gunning.
Cousins: David and Bob Barlow, Rick
Bennett, Dorrie Rock, Sue Velichko.
Brother-in-law Denny Peterson.
Michael was predeceased by his aunts,
uncles, grandparents, parents Alfred and
Margaret McMillin and brother Ian.
Also by very good friends Davie Gagnon
and Bryce Hyatt.
One may leave memories and sympathies
at www.thompsonfs.ca
To honour Michael, a memorial event
will take place on the long weekend in
May. Details to follow.
Any donations in memory of Michael
to the SPCA in BC or to the Knowledge
Network, please.
Thank you.
Glyphosate, Imazapyr, Saflufenacil, Flumioxazin, Pyroxasulfone.)
• Pesticides proposed for wood pole maintenance: Cop-R-Plastic, Cobra Wrap Gel, Can-Bor,
Cu-Bor, Cobra Rod, Cobra Wrap, Pro-foam. (Active Ingredients: Copper Naphthenate &
The proposed term of the IPMP is five years from June 5, 2020 to June 4, 2025.
Touchstones Nelson: Museum of Art
and History is opening Gallery B once
again to local artists of all mediums
and expertise levels for the 2020 Members
Show and Sale. The exhibition
runs February 22 to May 28 with an
opening reception on Friday, February
21 from 7 to 9 pm.
The Members Show is an accessible
way for artists ranging from seasoned
professionals to first-time exhibitors
to experience the excitement of showcasing
work in a gallery setting. It also
gives the Museum the opportunity to
reciprocate members’ support and take
a visual measure of what our community
is creating.
The last member exhibition, which
took place in 2017, was a beautiful and
eclectic showing of the talent, dedication
and passion that exists within the Nelson
community and area. For more information
THE WORKS 83 point
Osprey nests relocated
Nelson Hydro is planning to relocate
two osprey nests located on either side
of the Harrop ferry crossing. Both nests will be transferred onto
new nest platforms erected on Nelson Hydro wooden poles,
located close to the existing poles with live electrical lines.
Currently, sticks from the nests are at high risk of shorting
out, potentially causing osprey injury or mortality. Nelson
Hydro is taking proactive measures to reduce the risk, by shifting
the nests to safe, alternate poles, improving line security
and reducing the risk of a power outage.
The permitted work is scheduled to take place in February,
while the osprey are away on their wintering grounds. Nests
will be temporarily protected from occupancy by Canada
Geese using deterrents and these will be removed in early
April, once the osprey return from their migration.
Coldest Night of
the Year 2020
In the last few weeks
British Columbia has experienced
some record low
temperatures and snowfalls.
Although some British
Columbians are thrilled
with the conditions at the
ski hills many folks who are
experiencing homelessness
find this weather to be a life
threatening challenge.
On Saturday, February 22
Nelson CARES Society will
host the 6th annual Coldest
Night of the Year (CNOY).
The Coldest Night of the
Year is a walkathon fundraiser
that raises awareness
and funds for the most vulnerable
right here in our
community.
Nelson CARES preservers,
maintains and develops
safe affordable housing, but
sometimes a place to live
is not enough and people
need some support to
maintain that housing. The
Ready For Home program
does just that and the funds
raised by Coldest Night of
the Year fund this program.
Nelson CARES would like
to invite everyone to spend
some time on the streets
on Saturday, February 22
and consider the challenges
faced by those who spend
years there.
We are looking for volunteers,
team captains,
walkers and donors. Come
out and help make Nelson
a warmer place everyone.
