Christchurch University
a long-winded club name,
but also as twenty20
cricket champions.
The two premier cricket
sides meet at Hagley Oval
today in the final of the
men’s Metro Premiership
T20 final.
In last week’s semi-finals
PROPOSED changes to the
national football league will
see a change to the format
of the Mainland Premier
League and Southern
League this season.
When the eight team
MPL begins on March 7
it will consist of three full
round-robins. The top two
sides will then play the
top two teams from the
FootballSouth Premier
League in a semi-final and
final format to find a South
Island champion.
For the past two years
the MPL has consisted of
DOMINANT: Burnside captured their seventh
straight women’s sevens title in the Canterbury
centre finals at New Brighton Bowling Club.
Steve Ditfort and Ian Rule
won the fours 21-4.
The centre finals weekend
also saw a number of
other champions crowned.
Major men’s titles went to
Elmwood Park’s Rod Greaney,
Ditfort and Ian Rule
in the triples.
The pairs was won by
Rohan Ware and Brian
Ware of Christchurch. The
fours was won by Burnside’s
Richard Hocking,
Mike Small, Kevin Gore
and Barry Williams. The
CHANGES: This year’s
MPL will revert to three
full rounds with a reduced
Southern League.
two rounds between all
teams. The top five teams
from the MPL then joined
the top three sides from
the FootballSouth Premier
League in the Southern
League which consisted of
singles title went to Joseph
van der Pennen from
Bowls Papanui.
On the women’s side
the singles title went to
Elmwood Park’s Mandy
Boyd. The fours was won
by the Redcliffs Mt Pleasant
combo of Amy Caddie,
Margaret Bunce, Annabel
Walmisley and Jude Main.
The pairs went to
Burnside’s Bruce and
Bassett, while Bruce and
Bassett teamed up with Lee
to win the triples.
Twenty20 final decided today
Changes to football pending
• By Gordon Findlater
Albans by three runs.
Burnside West’s run to
the final has come on the
back of some tidy bowling
displays from Joshua Poysden,
Jackson Latham, Sam
Carlaw and Matt Hay.
The impressive bowling
has seen their side concede
more than 106 runs on
just one occasion during
the competition.
However, that came
when Easts scored 140
and cruised to an eight
run victory in the opening
round in December.
Easts road to the final
has been a stark contrast.
They have conceded under
134 runs on just one occasion,
but have been red hot
with the bat.
Opening pair Tom
MacRury and Dylan
Goldstone are both in the
top-five competition run
scorers and have amassed
441 runs between them in
eight innings.
The match at Hagley
Oval begins at 1.30pm.
The premier women’s T20
final also takes place today
between St Albans and
Sydenham. The match will
be played at Hagley Park 2
from 1pm.
one full round-robin.
Proposed changes to the
national league from 2021
will see the competition
move from 18 matches to
23 matches a season. The
10-team league currently
consists of two full roundrobins
and a top four playoffs.
However, proposed
changes in 2021 would see
the league move to two full
rounds, followed by a top six
and bottom four split before
a final third round-robin.
The proposed changes to
the national league would
also see a promotion/
relegation system
implemented.
