Wednesday February 12 2020 Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz BAY HARBOUR PAGE 9 Your Local Views Kris Tynan responds to last week’s article about bins overflowing at Taylors Mistake Beach First of all, big thanks to the Taylors Mistake lifeguards who pick up stray bits of rubbish from their beautiful beach. Great to hear that happens. I am frequently at the beach in the mornings either before or after the council workers collect the rubbish. Invariably, after a very warm day there will be too much rubbish for the bins available and it has almost always been placed next to the bins. Bigger bins are clearly required but it seems like the Bigbelly Bins are on their way to solve this problem. It is true that after a windy day lighter rubbish will have blown around a bit but that is understandable, and again the Big Bellies should solve that. In my opinion and experience 90 per cent of visitors to Taylors Mistake are responsible with their rubbish and I would like to comment that your headlines ‘Taylors Mistake being treated as a rubbish tip’ and ‘Taylors Mistake a dumping ground’ are both inaccurate and over dramatic. Then again they achieved their purpose of getting attention and inspiring comment … so I guess as media that’s your job. Grateful for the beautiful place we have the privilege to inhabit. Readers respond to last week’s article about the completion of repairs to the Moncks Bay tram shelter after several months of delays Gordon Macadam – We have a problem with the time taken for city contractors. While [it was] understandable immediately after the quakes, it is no longer acceptable for projects to take so long. The conditions of city issued contracts should be publicly available. The financial stuff can remain confidential but only contractors that have the resources to promptly attend to contracts should get to tender. Contract conditions should include: • Once started council contracts are to be worked every business day. • The management team of a job should have their name available to the ratepayers. • The reason for any delay in progress should be posted on the job for passers by to see. • Traffic management that disrupts traffic should be in place only when work is in progress or the hazard is in existence. • All traffic management systems that disrupt traffic should display the name and phone number of the person responsible for that system. We have tolerated for too long a system where contractors can juggle multiple contracts with a minimum of labour and poor project management which can be covered up by shifting the team else where when a planning oversight is exposed. Liz Barrie – There were three men working on this project when ever I went past, so why did it take so long? I wonder how much it cost. Linen and leather at Stoddart Cottage LINEN GARMENTS and leather accessories handcrafted by Lithuanian-born Elena Chomic will be on display at Diamond Harbour’s Stoddart Cottage Gallery this month. In this solo exhibition, Chomic, of Diamond Harbour continues her birth-country traditions with original design and contemporary style. Linen, leather, wood and wool are common materials for folk art and craft in Lithuania and there Elena Chomic is a long and strong tradition of using locally produced linen textiles for clothing and household furnishing. Colours from nature such as warmly glowing amber, ochre clay, forest greens and sea blues are preferred for daily life, even the brighter blue of linen flax flowers. Chomic was born and raised near the Baltic Sea and at school she was taught how to work with linen textiles, to weave and embroider, and to make objects from leather and wood. She has continued to work with TRADITIONAL: Lithuanianborn Elena Chomic’s handcrafted garments will be available to view this month in a new solo exhibition at Stoddart Cottage Gallery. these materials throughout her life. “It’s been six years since I arrived in New Zealand and today it sometimes seems to me that I was born here,” Chomic said. Stoddart Cottage is open to the public every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10am until 4pm.
