A KAROA AND SURROUNDS
You could be forgiven if you feel like
you’re walking back in time as you stroll
along the main street of Akaroa. Here
you will find pastel-coloured architecture
from ages past, all finished with
decorative gables resembling fine lace
work and highly-fragrant gardens which
all combine to create a fairy tale-like
setting.
There is much to do here, whether you
are seeking a restful getaway, a bit of
retail therapy or even a chance to see
ocean nature at its best, there is indeed
something for everyone.
The area has much early history with the
area influenced through Maori, French
and English settlers. Originally a fishing
port, the area is now a tourist haven with
both local, national and international
tourists now visiting this village.
Cruise boats frequent in the summer
which create a business, however if you
are seeking a more restful and laid back
experience and want to avoid the influx,
just check the cruise boat schedule
which is available online.
There are many activities to see and
do in Akaroa throughout the year. The
Le Race cycle finishes in Akaroa on
23 March. There will be an influx to
see competitors who have raced from
Christchurch to Akaroa in one day.
The Akaroa FrenchFest is another
highlight on the events calendar. For a
weekend in October you can bask in
all things French and enjoy the sights,
sounds and tastes of the culture.
