And I was fortunateenough, last month, onThursday, January 23,2020, when I was askedto perform as ChitaRivera as a surprisepresent for the legendaryChita Rivera herself ather private birthday partyat Industry Bar. Chita satright in the front centerof the stage and enjoyedevery moment of it. Itwas very surreal andthe most out-of-bodyexperience that I wouldcherish for the rest of mylife! How did you arrive atyour drag name?I’m originally fromThailand, so I knew Iwanted a Thai namefor my drag personathat started with a“P” because of my boyname (Plu). I ventured inthe name of Thai food(Patsy Ew or Patt Thai)but ended up choosingPattaya, because it is thename of the famous cityin Thailand that is knownaround the world as “Theland of the world’s mostbeautiful ladyboys.”Do you recall thefunniest momentperforming live, themost embarrassing andthe most triumphant? There is actually ONEperformance/moment inparticular that qualifiesfor all three. It waswhen I competed at thenational Miss Continental2017 pageant in Chicago. For the talent portion, Iperformed “All That Jazz”from the musical Chicago. It was my first timecompeting at a nationalpageant. I was verynervous, and halfwaythrough the number, Idid a hitch-kick layout, and my wig flew off ofmy head. I could hear theentire theater/audiencegasp. Somehow I caughtthe wig mid-air, put itback on and continuedthe dance withoutmissing a single beat. Atthat moment I was soembarrassed, but I hadto laugh about it and getthrough the performance. The funny part aboutthis was that I’ve beenperforming this number, wearing this same wig,at shows in the city over300 times and neveronce lost a wig, untilmy very first time on anational stage. I ended upwinning the “Best Talent”award that year with thisexact performance. (Youcan find the video onYouTube.)What advice wouldyou give someone whois looking to do drag?Invest in your craft/drag. That doesn’t meanspending a lot of money, but spending moretime, effort and focuson your performance, makeup, costumesand your overall looks.Drag pageants andcompetitions are also agreat, intensive way tolearn and elevate your artforms. When do you startyour reign as Miss GayAmerica, and what areyour duties? My reign started when Iwas crowned! The nextmorning I was alreadyperforming and doingmeet and greets as thenewly crowned MissGay America. Besidesseveral appearances andperformances aroundthe country, I also have ahuge responsibility in theadministrative part of thesystem. I had to create abrand new email addressjust for this purpose. My job is to make surethat every preliminaryruns smoothly andabides by all the rulesand regulations of MissGay America. I’ll alsohave to make sure thatall the contestants arebeing judged fairly andget the best constructivecriticisms at the end ofthe night.I’ve been in contactwith all the promotersfrom each preliminary toschedule dates for theirpageants, helping thempromote and answerall the administrativequestions they mighthave. On top of that, I’mconstantly reaching outto potential contestantsto offer my assistance inevery way I can. This seems like anoverwhelming job, indeedit is, but it is somethingthat I’m passionateabout. Plus, the ownersof Miss Gay America(Michael Dutzer and RobMansman) and formers(known as “Forevers”)have been helping andguiding me through theprocess marvelously.
I will be traveling aroundthe country attendingall the preliminaries forMiss Gay America 2021throughout the year.My very first officialpreliminary will be theMiss Gay New YorkAmerica pageant, righthere in New York City(The Cutting Room)on Tuesday, March 10,produced by MGNYA’spromoter, Thomas John. The pageant starts at8 p.m. (door opens at 7p.m.).
