Tips for Caregivers to Improve Your Quality of Health

T

Church Home LifeSpring

aking care of a loved one when he or she needs it most can be incredibly rewarding. It

can also help you build a closer relationship with that person as you spend more time

together.

However, caregiving can take a toll on the caregiver. It’s not uncommon for a caregiver

to be juggling their usual responsibilities (like work, home, and family) while adding the

responsibility of caregiving. This double-duty can lead to caregiver burnout, “...a state

of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion.” It happens when the caregiver feels

overworked and potentially can have a great effect on your health.

As a caregiver, you have to pay careful attention to your own health to ensure you’re

able to provide the best care and maintain your own quality of life and respective

responsibilities.

Here are a few tips to guide you and help you maintain a good quality of health while

you care for a loved one.

Take Care of Your Needs

Caregiving is a part of your life, but it’s important to acknowledge there are still

many other things that require your attention. Failing to keep up with those can lead to

overwhelmed feelings, frustration, and hopelessness. If you’re feeling unwell, address that.

Keep your own doctor’s appointments, exercise routine, healthy eating habits, and time to

yourself.

You can’t be at your best for your loved one if you’re not taking care of yourself.

Manage Medications

Staying organized is important when you’re a caregiver, and part of that is organizing

your loved one’s medication schedule. Don’t rely on your memory; it can be overwhelming.

There are many resources available to help you set and keep a schedule.

Stay Social

Maintain contact with your friends and family. Socializing improves the health of your

brain, boosts your immune system, and helps you relieve stress. Make plans for lunch or

coffee; these are easy ways to incorporate socializing without taking extra time out of your

day.

Stay active in your favorite religious or community organizations.

Hire some help with caregiving so you can take a day or a weekend off to spend time with your

family. If you feel like doing nothing but relaxing on the couch at the end of the day, consider a

video chat with a far-away friend.

You’ll also want to have quality time with the loved one you’re caring for. It’s not all about

helping them with daily tasks. Enjoy a walk or a drive, visit a local hot spot or tourist attraction, go

out for lunch, play games, or watch a favorite comedy together.

The best part of caregiving is getting to spend time with your loved one, so make the best of that

time and plan an activity that you can enjoy together.

Ask for Help

You don’t have to do this alone. There are almost 40 million people in the United States who are

acting as caregivers. Your closest support team may include your family members and close friends.

In some cases, hiring a part-time caregiver can help you get the rest you need so you can provide

the best care when it’s your turn.

In all cases, there are a number of resources in Georgia and online that can assist.

• AARP Family Caregiving: The website offers tips and advice on caregiving and achieving

balance in your life, stories from caregivers like you, and a support line where you’ll find

free assistance.

• Caregiver Action Network: Here you’ll find tips and a community of caregivers who are able

to answer your questions and offer support.

• National Institute on Aging: A great source for tips, articles, news stories, and more.

• Georgia Department of Human Services Division of Aging Services: Talk to the information

specialists at Georgia’s Aging & Disability Resource Connection for nearby resources and

more.

• Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving: In addition to tips and resource lists, this

organization provides training, tools, and more to help you become a great caregiver while

taking care of yourself, too.

In some cases, professional short and long-term care may be a good choice. Contact us to learn

more about person centered care services. We invite you to visit us and get to know how we can

help you and your loved one.

simple ways to eat

healthier every day

Diets can be difficult to

navigate. Since no two

people are the same, a

healthy diet that satisfies one person

won’t necessarily satisfy another.

Vegetarians might be perfectly happy

without chicken or steak, while some

people might shudder at the notion

of never indulging in the occasional

filet mignon.

While the most effective diets

tend to be those that emphasize

nutrition while still allowing

individuals to indulge in some of

their favorite dishes in moderation,

the following are three ways that

everyone, regardless of their personal

preference, can eat healthy every day.

1. Eat lots of whole-grain

carbohydrates.

Fad diets tend to paint carbs

as the enemy, but various studies

have shown just how integral

carbohydrates, particularly wholegrain

varieties, are to a healthy diet.

One such study published in 2018

in the medical journal The Lancet

3

Public Health found that diets that

got between 50 and 55 percent of

their calories from plant-based

carbohydrates like whole grains

were associated with a lower risk of

mortality than low-carb diets that

favored animal-derived protein

sources. When buying carbs at the

grocery store, shoppers can opt for

whole-grain varieties, including

whole-grain pastas, brown rice and

cereals. That won’t require sacrificing

flavor and makes for a simple way to

eat healthier every day.

2. Make a concerted effort to eat

more fruits and vegetables.

The United Kingdom-based

National Health Service, which is

the largest single-payer healthcare

system in the world, recommends

eating at least five portions of fruits

and vegetables every day. That may

sound like a lot, but it’s pretty easy to

incorporate all those healthy fruits

and veggies into a diet. For example,

add a serving of antioxidant-rich

blueberries to your cereal bowl each

morning. At dinner time, allow

vegetables to take up the most real

estate on your plate. The Centers for

Disease Control and Prevention note

that diets rich in fruits and veggies

can help people control their weight

and may even reduce their risk for

certain diseases, including cancer.

3. Kick added sugars to the

curb.

Avoiding added sugars is another

way anyone, regardless of their food

preferences, can eat healthier every

day. Healthy foods such as fruit

contain natural sugars, and these

don’t pose a threat to overall health.

However, added sugars, which the

Harvard Medical School notes are

found in many foods and can include

honey, molasses and corn syrup, can

increase a person’s risk for various

conditions and diseases, including

obesity, heart disease and diabetes.

Fruit contains fiber that slows the

absorption of natural sugars, but

the body digests added sugars much

more quickly, leading to an uptick in

blood sugar levels that can ultimately

contribute to diabetes. Added sugars

can be found in a host of foods and

beverages, including some that aren’t

generally considered unhealthy,

like bread, certain breakfast cereals

and pasta sauces. When shopping,

consumers should read nutrition

labels and avoid products with

excessive amounts of sugar.

Eating healthy does not require

people to abandon their favorite

foods. A few simple adjustments

can be all it takes to improve the

nutritional value of your diet.

Why annual checkups

are so important

Nutritious diets and routine exercise are

two hallmarks of a healthy lifestyle.

Combining the two can lower people’s

risk for various diseases and contribute to a high

quality of life. But food and physical activity are

not the only things people should do to improve

their chances of living long, healthy lives.

Preventive care is important. One of the

most effective principles of preventive care is to

schedule an annual checkup with a physician.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and

Prevention, routine health exams and tests can

find problems before they start. During annual

check-ups, doctors may notice some red flags,

such as high cholesterol, that men and women

won’t detect on their own. These warning signs

could be increasing people’s risk for disease

and/or discomfort. Many of these red flags are

undetectable without proper screenings, which is

why annual checkups are integral to maintaining

one’s health.

Annual checkups also serve as a great time

for adults to be screened for certain cancers.

The American Cancer Society notes that cancer

screenings are used to find cancer before a person

develops symptoms. That’s a vital benefit of annual

checkups, as cancers caught in their early stages

are more easily treated. In addition, catching

cancer before it has metastasized greatly improves

patients’ prognosis.

Another reason to schedule annual checkups

is that they make perfect opportunities for

patients to discuss their family histories with their

physicians. This is especially important for adults

over 40, as age and family history are significant

risk factors for a host of conditions and diseases.

Men and women concerned about conditions and

diseases that their family

members have had can

discuss those concerns with

their physicians during their

annual checkups. Physicians

can then recommend ways

for patients to balance their

risk, calming patients’ concerns

and giving them a road map to

reduce their risk for conditions

and diseases that seem to run in

their families.

Annual checkups are as vital

a component of a healthy lifestyle

as nutritious diets and routine

exercise. By scheduling annual

checkups with their physicians,

adults can closely monitor their

overall health and potentially

uncover issues before they escalate

into major health risks.

What men should

discuss with their

physician

Routine doctor

visits are a vital

component of a

healthy lifestyle. As noted

by the U.S. National

Library of Medicine, even

men who feel healthy

and live active lifestyles

must makea routine

visits to their healthcare

providers. Such visits

can assess risk for future

medical problems and

offer men the opportunity

to update vaccinations.

Routine health checkups

also give doctors a chance

to screen for medical

issues.

Doctors consider a

man’s age and other risk

factors to determine

when and how frequently

he will need certain

medical screenings. For

example, while men between the

ages of 40 and 64 are often advised to

get blood pressure screenings at least

once per year, those with diabetes,

heart disease, kidney problems, and

other conditions may need more

frequent screenings.

No two men have the same

medical histories, which only

highlights the need for men of all

ages to schedule annual physical

exams with their physicians.

Such exams can reveal potential

problems and also make for great

opportunities to discuss more

specific medical screenings with

their physicians. The following are

some general screening tests and

guidelines recommended for all

men between the ages of 40 and 64,

courtesy of the USNLM.

Prostate cancer

The USNLM notes that most

men age 50 or older should discuss

screening for prostate cancer with

their physicians. Ethnicity and family

history are some of the recognized

risk factors for prostate cancer. As a

result, African American men and

men with a family history of prostate

cancer in a first degree relative

younger than 65 should discuss

screenings beginning at age 45. There

are pros and cons to prostate cancer

screenings, and these should be

part of men’s discussions with their

physicians.

Colorectal cancer

All men between the ages of

50 and 75 should be screened for

colorectal cancer. Physicians may

recommend colorectal screening

for men under age 50 with a

family history of colon cancer or

polyps. In addition, physicians may

consider screenings for men under

50 who have a history

of inflammatory bowel

disease.

Cholesterol

The USNLM advises

men to have their

cholesterol levels checked

every five years. Men with

certain conditions, such as

diabetes and heart disease,

may need to be checked

more often.

Diabetes

Diabetes screenings

are recommended every

three years for men age 45

and older. Men who are

overweight and younger

than 45 should ask their

physicians if they should

be screened before they

reach 45.

Osteoporosis

Women are more likely to

develop osteoporosis than men,

but that doesn’t mean men are

immune to this condition marked

by a weakening of the bones due to

tissue loss. Fractures after age 50,

heavy alcohol use, smoking, and low

body weight are some risk factors

that can make men vulnerable to

osteoporosis.

Health screenings can catch

diseases and other conditions in

their early stages when they’re most

treatable. Such screenings should be

a vital part of men’s health routines.

Health screenings every

woman should get

Routine wellness exams are

essential for women who

want to maintain and/

or improve their health. Women

may not be familiar with all of the

screening options that can keep

them on the right track.

Preventative health screenings

can shed light on risks for certain

diseases and provide insight into

patient behaviors that may be

harmful. Screenings also may help

save a life.

Healthy diets and daily exercise

are hallmarks of healthy people, but

routine wellness exams are just as

important. The following are some

screenings women should include in

their health and wellness routines.

• Blood pressure: Doctors will

typically test blood pressure at

every visit. Women whose blood

pressure is below 120/80 mmHg

can go every two years between

blood pressure readings up until

age 20, advises The American

Heart Association. Adults 40 or

older, or those with conditions

that put them at risk for

hypertension, should go

annually or as advised by a

doctor.

• Cervical cytology:

The American College

of Obstetricians

and Gynecologists

recommends routine

pelvic examinations

with cervical testing that

includes Pap testing and

HPV testing. Consult with

an OB-GYN for testing

frequency, which depends

on age.

• Cholesterol: Cholesterol

levels alone are not indicative

of one’s overall health. However,

a complete cholesterol test can

determine a person’s risk for heart

disease. If levels are consistently

normal, this test may only need to be

performed every five years, advises

the National Institutes of Health.

• Mammogram: Mammograms

screen for breast cancer. Given

the risk of false positives, debate

continues as to how frequently

women need these screenings. The

most recent guidelines from the U.S.

Preventive Services Task Force says

mammograms are recommended

starting at age 50, and should occur

every two years. The American

Cancer Society advises starting at

age 45 and having a mammogram

annually through age 55.

• Blood-glucose test:

The National Institute

of Diabetes and

Digestive

Kidney

Diseases says women should be

screened regularly for prediabetes

or diabetes beginning around age

45. Women can speak with their

physicians to determine how often

they should receive these screenings.

• Osteoporosis screenings: Bone

density can be measured starting

at age 65 or earlier if a woman has

a high fracture risk, states Regis

College.

• Skin examination: The

American Academy of Dermatology

suggests speaking with a

dermatologist about skin exams.

Self-examinations should be routine,

but dermatologists may recommend

more formal tests to women who

meet certain criteria.

Women should speak to

their doctors about personalized

screenings based on family

history and other risk

factors.

Do earbuds and headphones cause hearing loss?

Ear buds and headphones can contribute to hearing loss even if you listen to them for just 15 minutes a day, if the volume is at or

above 85 decibels. The louder the sound, the faster hearing damage occurs. Most smartphones and tablets can produce volumes

over 100 decibels.

How do earbuds and headphones cause hearing damage?

Exposure to loud sounds—at or above 85 decibels—is a leading cause of hearing loss, because it damages the cells of your inner

ear. When it comes to noise-induced hearing loss, it all depends on how loud and how long.

Earbuds and headphones sit in or close to the ear canal, which places sound very close to the inner ear. This proximity has the

effect of boosting sound by an equivalent of nine decibels. That’s like going from a tinkling bell to the drone of a lawn mower.

Also, many people boost the volume to block out

background noise.

These days, many people wear earbuds for hours on

end. Even moderately loud sound can cause hearing

damage if you listen for too long. For example,

listening to a 90-decibel sound for three hours can be

as damaging as hearing a 155 decibel-sound (like a jet

taking off) for just thirty seconds.

Remember the 60/60 rule; listen at 60% of the volume

just 60 minutes a day.

How to wear earbuds and decrease your risk?

When wearing ear buds, keep the volume below

50%

Choose earmuff-style “noise-cancelling”

headphones to reduce or eliminate background

noise

If you prefer in-canal earbuds, make sure they fit

tightly to block out more background noise

Invest in “custom” earbuds made from a replica of

your ear canal. Tailored to your anatomy, custom

earbuds block out the most background noise so

you can listen at safer volumes. Custom earbuds

also deliver the best sound quality.

Educate children and teenagers. Most have no idea

that once hearing damage happens, it’s irreversible.

It’s important to prevent hearing loss from

occurring in the first place.

Tip! Did you know that the longer hearing loss

goes unrecognized and untreated, the faster it may

progress?

Pitfalls to avoid as

you try to lose weight

New Year’s resolutions run the

gamut from the simple to

the complex. Some people

resolve to make small changes that

don’t affect their daily lives all that

much, while others aim to make

significant changes in the hopes of

dramatically improving their quality

of life. Resolving to lose weight,

which often tops annual lists of the

most popular resolutions, falls into

the latter category.

A 2018 survey from Cision

and Varo Money found that 45

percent of respondents resolved to

lose weight or get in shape in 2018.

Unfortunately, various studies have

found that resolutions often fall

by the wayside long before

people achieve their goals.

In fact, a 2015 report from

U.S. News indicated

that 80 percent of

resolutions fail by

the second week

of February. Such

success rates, or

lack thereof, might

not be too big a

deal for people

who make silly

resolutions that,

successful or not,

would not have

too big an impact

on their lives. But

many people resolve

to lose weight for

serious reasons, such

as lowering their risk

for disease or improving

their quality of life. In such

instances, success can be a

matter of life or death.

After resolving to lose weight,

people might be derailed by some

common pitfalls. Recognizing these

pitfalls and learning how to avoid

them can help people achieve their

weight loss goals.

• You’re not specific enough. Try

not to be vague when setting your

weight loss goals. Simply saying “I

want to lose weight” likely won’t

provide the motivation you need to

achieve your goal. Speak with your

physician and ask about how much

weight you need to lose. Once you

learn that number, work with your

doctor and a personal

trainer to set

realistic

goals. For example, if you need

to lose 10 lbs., resolving to lose

one pound per week for 10 weeks

is a specific, realistic and healthy

approach to weight loss. And by

the end of that 10-week period, you

likely will have grown accustomed to

your new health routine, increasing

the likelihood that you will keep it up

even after you achieved your goal.

• You try to save up your

calories. The experts at

Northwestern

Medicine® note that many people

think skipping a few meals per day

will decrease their overall calorie

intake. However, such an approach

typically leads to overeating when

you sit down for a meal or increased

snacking throughout the day. In

addition, skipping meals slows down

your metabolism, adversely affecting

how your body approaches burning

calories.

• You embrace a fad diet. Various

studies examining an assortment of

fad diets have indicated that such

diets typically only produce shortterm

results, if any. Any weight

lost while adhering to a fad diet is

typically regained once dieters go

off the diet. Instead of adopting

a fad diet, work with your

physician to devise a

healthy, long-term eating

plan.

• You eat more

than you think.

Audra Wilson, RD,

a clinical dietitian

affiliated with

Northwestern

Medicine®,

notes that

people typically

underestimate

their calorie intake

by 30 percent.

Chances are, you’re

consuming more

calories than you think,

even while you attempt

to lose weight. Track the

calories you consume each

day so you can stay the course

in regard to what your physician

recommends.

Avoiding some common weight

loss pitfalls can help people turn their

resolution to drop some weight into

a reality.
