Resolving to lose weight,which often tops annual lists of themost popular resolutions, falls intothe latter category.A 2018 survey from Cisionand Varo Money found that 45percent of respondents resolved tolose weight or get in shape in 2018.Unfortunately, various studies havefound that resolutions often fallby the wayside long beforepeople achieve their goals.In fact, a 2015 report fromU.S. News indicatedthat 80 percent ofresolutions fail bythe second weekof February. Suchsuccess rates, orlack thereof, mightnot be too big adeal for peoplewho make sillyresolutions that,successful or not,would not havetoo big an impacton their lives. Butmany people resolveto lose weight forserious reasons, suchas lowering their riskfor disease or improvingtheir quality of life. In suchinstances, success can be amatter of life or death.After resolving to lose weight,people might be derailed by somecommon pitfalls. Recognizing thesepitfalls and learning how to avoidthem can help people achieve theirweight loss goals.• You’re not specific enough. Trynot to be vague when setting yourweight loss goals. Simply saying “Iwant to lose weight” likely won’tprovide the motivation you need toachieve your goal. Speak with yourphysician and ask about how muchweight you need to lose. Once youlearn that number, work with yourdoctor and a personaltrainer to setrealisticgoals. For example, if you needto lose 10 lbs., resolving to loseone pound per week for 10 weeksis a specific, realistic and healthyapproach to weight loss. And bythe end of that 10-week period, youlikely will have grown accustomed toyour new health routine, increasingthe likelihood that you will keep it upeven after you achieved your goal.• You try to save up yourcalories. The experts atNorthwesternMedicine® note that many peoplethink skipping a few meals per daywill decrease their overall calorieintake. However, such an approachtypically leads to overeating whenyou sit down for a meal or increasedsnacking throughout the day.
