LOCAL REVIEWSFilm ReviewsbyBill RobinsonThe Lighthouse (2020)The Lighthouse is the latest psychologicalthriller from acclaimed director RobertEggers. It centers around two lighthousekeepers as they battle a fierce storm andtry to maintain their sanity in the process.The film is shot with a 4:3 aspect ratio,making the picture far narrower than thestandard 16:9 we usually see in the cinema.This pens the action into an incredibly tightspace, making the film feel claustrophobicand inescapable, much like the lighthouseislands. In addition, the absence of colourin the picture helps to emphasize theconstant sense of dread and terror thatis swirling around Defoe and Pattinson'scharacters. Done correctly, black andwhite films can achieve an atmosphereand tone that is unrivalled. On the topicLost in Translation (2003)Empire magazine recently called Lost inTranslation one of their best films of the21st century so far. The story is slow andthoughtful and although I was interested,I'm not fully behind the hype.Lost in Translation tells an odd story oftroubled romantics played by Bill Murrayand Scarlett Johansson. They are eachhaving problems with their separatepartners and eventually bond over theirshared experience in a soulless hotel inJapan. The dramatic age gap between thecharacters is easily apparent, making theirbudding romantic connection uniquelyintriguing and taboo. Both of theirrespective performances are good, whichis a relief given that they are essentially theof Defoe and Pattinson, they provide thefilm with its only performances, and theyare equal parts beautiful and harrowing.They expertly guide us down the path tomadness with every hallucination-inducedscream or alcohol fuelled punch; it isvisceral to watch.As may be obvious at this point, TheLighthouse is not a film for the faint ofheart. Rarely have I encountered descentsinto madness portrayed so effectively andonly two characters in the whole movie.Johansson in particular gives a stand outperformance as a newly graduated Yalestudent, struggling to find her place inthe real world. By contrast Bill Murray'sperformance is very ... Bill Murray; funnyand cynical but nothing new.Lost in Translation has an incrediblyslow and meandering pace, which is notnecessarily a bad thing, but for someonewho doesn't find romantic films particularlyenjoyable, I did struggle. More interestingfor me was the theme of two people lostin a vibrant and immersive culture. Thefilm oozes Japanese culture, to an almostproblematic extent. Frequent jokes madeat the expense of Japanese citizens are abit off colour by modern standards and(although I have never been to Japan) Iso stylishly in a modern film. This depictionof insanity is helped enormously by KarinBlaschke's stunning cinematography.Seldom do we see empty space in thetight frames, objects characters andprops constantly fill our view resulting ina beautifully messy and disturbing feeling.Nightmarish imagery of dark, deep sea fillsthe screen as the audience plunges intothe character's madness with them. Whatthis film lacks in a solid and memorablenarrative it makes up for in a treacle-thickatmosphere that stayed with me fromeerie start to sickening finish.Far from being a light-hearted popcornflick, Egger's The Lighthouse is moodyand oppressive; aside from a lack of anoticeable story, it's absolutely brilliant.9/10 in cinemas now.found the presentation of the city to behighly stereotypical.
