With aBroadwaysensibilityand razorsharpwit, Sherry Pie hasfast become one of thenames in New York Citydrag. As she joins the castof “RuPaul’s Drag Race”Season 12, she is takingher serious work ethicand extensive theaterbackground and puttingit to the test. I caught upwith her to chat aboutthe process she followedin auditioning, as well aswhy she feels that there isabsolutely no where elselike New York City for drag. How exciting is it tobe part of the cast of“RuPaul’s Drag Race”Season 12?I am so excited! I am soexcited. You cannot seeme, but I am runningaround right now. [laughs]What is it like right atthis very moment as yourentire life is completelychanging? It is absolute LooneyTunes, and I really love it. Idon’t know what is goingon; every day I don’t knowwhere I am, or what I amdoing, or who I am. Buthoney, she throws on thewig and says, “Am I in theright place?”You have a very distinctperformance style, andit’s very theater focused.Do you think that it washelpful in doing youraudition tape?Yes and no. I think thatbecause my backgroundis so theatrical, when Iwas auditioning, I wasdefinitely looking ateverything with thateye. This year, when Iauditioned, I went guns-ablazin’.I said to myself thatI was not going to critiquemyself, and I was justgoing to do what I do, andhopefully they’ll like it!So many New York Citygirls are on this seasonwith you. What is it like tobe taking this magical ridewith so many other girlswho are part of the fabricof New York City drag?I had no idea who theother girls were that wereon the show obviously, but when we all saw eachother, it was so crazy. Weall knew each other, eventhough we haven’t allworked together. Honestly, this batch of New Yorkgirls is so great, becauseeach one of us doessomething so different butso “New York.” That justadds to why I think NewYork City is one of thebest places to see drag.Anything you want, any kind of dragyou need! If you’renot good at yourjob in New York, you don’t have ajob; they arethe bestof thebest. You wereone of thegirls whowas makinga hugename forherselfin NewYorkcitybefore“Drag Race”called. What doyou think of girls whoenter the businessof drag with theintention to justget onto “RuPaul’s DragRace”?I think you have to do it forwhatever reason it is thatyou want to do it. I don’tthink you should do it justto get onto a televisionshow, because there is noway you can prepare. It’snot just a television show;“RuPaul’s Drag Race” isthe Colosseum of drag. They are looking for thegladiators of drag queens. You have to be preparedto step outside of yourcomfort zone to go intothat competition. So many girls have comeout of New York Cityand become smashingsuccesses all over theworld. What New York Cityqueen/“Drag Race” alumnido you see now and wouldlove to pattern your careerafter?Bianca Del Rio all day.Bianca is a boss-ass bitch. The fact that adrag queencan playCarnegieHall andsell it outis gaggy. Iwanna beat CarnegieHall, but I’llprobably just end upbeing an usher.[laughs]@sherrypienycFRIDAYS
