20 | heart streathamStreatham Stands TogetherStreatham localstook to the HighRoad on Saturday8th February todemonstrate love,hope and unity lessthan a week afterthe terror attackwhich shook ourcommunity.Immediately after the incidenton Sunday 2nd February,news of the attack andshocking images of our HighRoad headlined nationaland international media.Social media channels werebusy with Streatham localschecking in on loved onesand sharing their shock atthe events that had unfolded.What was unseen by theworld’s media, was the instantdesire to come togetherand show that this act ofterror would not fracture ourcommunity or breed hatredfor others. Over coffee,on WhatsApp, Facebook,Instagram and Twitter, localpeople were beginning to plantheir stand against hatred.Here was a beautiful, organicresponse; that grew quicklythrough the strength ofcommunity and networks thatalready existed.Around 150 people met atSt Leonard/s Church to learnsongs led by choir directorsZoie Kennedy and Xenia Davis,before processing up the HighRoad, singing, “peace, there’sonly peace, there’s onlypeace”. Ann-Marie Lugay, whotook official photographs of theevent said, “I felt emotional,I had to hold back tears as weall left the church singing.”One local resident posted onsocial media, “Proud to bein Streatham this morning.♥️ procession of singers‘reclaiming’ the high street.Thank you. Very moving.”Throughout the day, hundredsof messages were writtenin chalk outside the Odeon,creating a visual symbol of thelove that is found in Streatham.Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan,arrived, thanking attendingpolice officers for their tirelesswork following the terror attack.Speaking to the crowd, hepraised the spirit of the day,“You set an example to otherparts of our city, other parts ofour country, and other partsof the world, because you area beacon, and I want to thankyou from the bottom of myheart… There are some peoplearound the world who thinkdiversity is a weakness, I thinkthe opposite, I think diversityis a strength, and Streathamyou have shown the worldthat.” Bell Ribeiro-Addy MPalso delivered a moving speechpraising the police and thecommunity spirit.Streatham showed a unitedfront as the public bowed theirheads and were led in prayer byleaders from Jewish, Christianand Muslim congregations. Acommunity spokesperson UmarMahmood said, “This was anamazing show of communitysolidarity.”Organiser Georgia Ladburysummed up the day: “it wasa great opportunity to showthat Streatham StandsTogether no matter what.”
