Music is in the air! 

Spring time approaches and once again 

Amersham Festival of Music has a wonderful 

programme of concerts and events to enjoy. 

Now in its 38th year the festival is a firm 

favourite with audiences. 

Founded by Iain Ledingham in 1983 Iain 

remains the festival’s Musical Director. Iain’s 

aim in starting the Festival was to promote 

music-making of the highest professional 

quality in the local area, using some of the very 

attractive local venues. From the outset it was 

warmly supported by local music lovers and a 

number of generous sponsors. There is also a 

Winter season of concerts performed by the 

festival’s own professional orchestra.There’s no 

need to go into London to hear professional 

musicians, you can hear them right here in Bucks! 

Today the annual festival spans a period of 

three or more weeks and features opera, jazz, 

choral music, chamber music, wine tasting and 

song. This year’s highlight will be a fully staged 

performance of Mozart’s opera Cosi Fan Tutte.

Sung in Italian, the performance will have English 

subtitles. If you’ve never been to an opera why 

not give it a try? If jazz is more your style don’t 

miss the internationally famous jazz singer Clare 

Teal and her Trio. Other events include Italian 

wine tasting with Italian Song, Mendelssohn’s 

choral favourite ‘Elijah’, a dinner concert at 

Chenies Manor and Amersham Concert Brass. 

The Festival committee are always keen to 

encourage and promote music for young people. 

The talented members of the Royal Grammar 

School Jazz Band will give a concert.

Audley Chalfont Dene 

Phase III construction well underway 

Audley Chalfont Dene, the luxury retirement 

village based in Chalfont St Peter, officially 

broke ground on the third phase of properties 

at a recent VIP reception attended by Rt 

Hon Dame Cheryl Gillan MP for Chesham 

and Amersham, owners and people from the 

local community. 

The ground breaking event marked the third phase 

in Audley’s continued efforts to meet the growing 

demand for high quality, innovative retirement 

living options. 

Taking inspiration from the Chilterns, the properties 

in this final phase of Audley Chalfont Dene are 

named after prominent figures of local history and 

the beautiful landmarks which surround Audley

Friends of the 

Chalfont St Peter 

Community Centre 

Fundraising has begun to try and re-build 

a new ‘Community Centre’ for Chalfont St 

Peter (CSP). Since launching their new 

Friends of the Chalfont St Peter Community 

Centre scheme in January, the trustees have 

been hard at work organising Open Days, 

applying for community grants and trying 

to draft in more volunteers to assist their 

fundraising. 

‘Local authority bodies are not funding capital 

builds, and CSP is not receiving any financial aid 

from the district or county councils to re-build 

their centre. 

‘Our village keeps growing and our facilities are 

stretched to the maximum already. It is going to 

be up to us as residents to raise the funds for this 

re-build, if we recognise the value of community

space. CSP residents raised £15 000 in 1962 to 

build the beginnings of what we have now, and 

we are going to have to, in 2020, encourage 

our whole community to contribute something – 

even if it is something small - towards making 

a fit-for-purpose centre for our village a reality,’ 

says local parish councillor and community 

centre trustee Karen Dickson. 

CSP’s Community Centre is a busy place with just 

over 2000 residents using it weekly. If you do the 

maths and calculate how many CSP residents have 

used the building over the last 60 years, you can 

easily see that it is time to invest wisely in a centre 

for our community again!

– death and taxes. So, having the security 

of a Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) scheme 

in your road doesn’t guarantee you will be 

protected against burglaries and other crime. 

But it certainly helps.

to NHW members. Why? Because they know 

that you are less likely to be a burglary victim 

with a NHW scheme in place. A typical 10% 

reduction is a good indicator of the reduced

families, friends and local businesses together, 

raising much needed funds for charities that are 

at the very heart of the community. This year’s 

charities are: Hearing Dogs for Deaf People,

The Fun Run provides the perfect excuse for a 

family day out with something for everyone and 

an opportunity to catch up with old friends and 

make a few new ones.

• Build up your running gradually. Start with a

Increase the pace and the distance weekly.

running with regular strength work to improve

Amersham School 

– Sixth Form – a Head 

Girl’s Perspective 

‘Not only has our Sixth Form family enabled me 

to flourish and identify my underlying love for 

all aspects of education, it has also made the 

final chapter of my secondary school experience 

fabulous.’ Saffron Doyle, Head Girl. 

At Amersham School we are viewed very much as 

individuals and everyone’s aspirations and achievements 

are recognised equally. I can hand on heart say that 

the teachers have constantly guided and supported 

me throughout the sixth form experience through 

mentoring, teaching and providing a plethora of 

leadership and collaborative teamwork opportunities. 

Though highly important, academia can leave students 

uninspired and confused with regards to their futures 

but our varied curriculum is both flexible and diverse 

offering pathways to Russell Group universities, higher 

level apprenticeships and the world of work. Amersham 

School is an inspirational place to study alongside our 

access to many enrichment activities including guest 

speakers, careers advice, World Challenge, EPQ, Duke 

of Edinburgh awards and an array of Student Senior 

Model United 

Nations Success 

at Dr Challoner’s 

Grammar School 

The Model United Nations movement is 

now nearly 100 years old and is designed to 

teach students the vital skills of diplomacy, 

international relations and about the United 

Nations. 

Participants develop their speaking, debating and 

writing skills in addition to their critical thinking, 

teamwork and leadership abilities. From the first 

International Assemblies held at Oxford University 

in 1921, the movement has spread globally. 

DCGS students first became involved in 2018 

with an inaugural conference held at DCGS. 

Since then students have attended conferences 

in St Petersburg as well as winning awards at the 

London International MUN.

Leadership roles. However, as Head Girl, to me, these 

titles do not represent someone of greater significance 

than the rest of the school, but someone with the 

ability to work effectively in a large team, giving equal 

importance to every individual within both the team, 

and the school family as a whole. Our school ethos of 

‘Live, Learn and Succeed, Together’ is at the centre of 

our commitment of our Sixth Form family. 

We have access to a fully equipped Technogym fitness 

facility comprising treadmills, cross-trainers, concept 

rowing equipment, cycling machines, easy-line hydraulic 

circuit machines, cabled weights and a free weights area 

in an air-conditioned facility. We certainly recognise the 

importance of balancing study with fitness! 

I would highly recommend Amersham School for Sixth 

Form studies where I have felt nurtured, valued and now 

feel ready to take my next steps into the world. 

Saffron Havana Doyle, Head Girl 

Most recently, 12 budding US Senators set off 

from DCGS, embarking on a unique opportunity to 

simulate the US Senate at Wycombe Abbey School. 

Following intensive research, the Year 13 students took 

on the role of their delegated Senator (8 Republicans 

and 4 Democrats) where they would proceed to 

debate, argue, lobby, filibuster, vote and table bills 

over the course of an action-packed three days. 

The bills debated were wide-ranging, covering 

abortion, gun control, drilling in the Arctic, the 

construction of President Trump’s wall and the 

President’s ability to declare war or place tariffs 

on trade. The Challoner’s team performed well, 

winning a number of awards for commitment and 

contribution, whilst the team won the award for best 

school. This was a fantastic achievement especially 

given many of those taking part had never before 

attended a MUN conference. We look forward to 

following their progress in the future.

Nutritional advice 

on being vegan 

Veganism is becoming increasingly 

popular and many people are choosing a 

vegan diet for moral and ethical reasons, 

but what are the implications for health? 

While some may feel that they thrive following 

a vegan diet, it might not suit everybody and 

there are several essential nutrients that are more 

difficult to obtain. Therefore, if you are considering 

becoming vegan, it is important to carefully plan 

and look for alternative sources of those nutrients 

– particularly vitamin B12, omega 3 fatty acids, 

iron and vitamin D. 

Vitamin B12 is required for optimal brain function 

and red blood cell production. It is found in 

animal products and is therefore the most 

common deficiency found in a vegan diet. It is 

possible to obtain some vitamin B12 from fortified 

foods – for example plant-based milks or cereals, 

but many vegans will need to take supplements. 

The quality and dosage of supplements can vary 

greatly so it is always best to seek advice from a 

professional first. 

Omega 3 fatty acids are important for skin, 

bone, joint and heart health, as well as helping 

to balance blood glucose levels, reduce 

inflammation and have even been linked to 

mental health. Oily fish such as salmon, mackerel 

and anchovies are an excellent source but chia, 

hemp and flax seeds are a good vegan source of 

omega 3 and are a great addition to smoothies, 

porridge or salads. 

Iron is integral for metabolism, red blood cell 

health and delivering oxygen to cells. There 

are two forms – haem iron from animals, and 

non-haem iron from plants. Unfortunately 

non-haem iron is less well-absorbed by the body 

but absorption can be increased by combining it 

with vitamin C. A lot of plants high in iron already 

contain vitamin C, but squeezing some lemon 

over your vegetables can help. Lentils, beans, 

tofu and quinoa are good vegan sources of iron. 

Vitamin D is used in immune support, calcium 

absorption into the bones, regulating blood 

pressure and facilitating gene expression. It can 

be made from cholesterol when skin is exposed 

to sunlight, but primary dietary sources are meat, 

fish and eggs, as well as fortified plant milks 

and cereals. Since we get little sunlight in winter 

in the UK, the government advises everyone 

supplement vitamin D between October and 

March. To ensure you are getting the correct 

dosage it is best to get your vitamin D levels 

tested.

Sporting Success at 

Chesham Grammar 

School (CGS) 

Since the start of the new year CGS students 

have been busy, from the Head Boy and 

Girl down to Year 7. Whether in the classroom, 

on the sports fields and courts, sharing their 

talent in the arts, or contributing to the 

community, everyone plays a key role. 

On the sporting front, the girls’ football teams 

lead the way by making it into the semi-finals of 

the County Cup for the third year running, hoping 

to repeat the treble success of last year’s wins in 

girls’ U13, U15 and U16. The boys’ U16 and girls’ 

U13 table tennis teams reached the zonal finals in 

Birmingham, with the girls’ team winning through 

to the regional finals in Bristol. Netball and hockey 

teams have also had good seasons. 

are on track to win their respective leagues. 

The CGS rugby teams now begin to build up 

towards the National Cups starting again in 

September, particularly the U14s who have had 

a brilliant season so far. The Junior Boys Cross 

Country team also finish the season as Regional 

Champions! Not to mention a whole host of 

new participants at the CGS Table Tennis Centre 

(youth and adults every Monday at CGS - 4pm 

until 9pm), kickboxing, futsal, basketball, squash 

and strength & conditioning sessions which run 

each week at the school. 

All in all, a great start to 2020!

Victory in Europe Day - Friday 8th May 

Celebrating its 75th Anniversary 

When VE (Victory in Europe) Day dawns on 

8th May 2020 it will be 75 years since the guns 

fell silent in Europe at the end of the Second 

World War. It meant an end to nearly six years 

of a war that had cost the lives of millions, had 

destroyed homes, families, and cities and had 

brought huge suffering and privations to the 

populations of entire countries. 

This year officials have moved the traditional 

May bank holiday from Monday 4th May to Friday 

8th May to mark this momentous occasion. The 

special day will be an opportunity to remember 

and reflect on the sacrifices that were made 

during the conflict, and show our gratitude to 

those who gave so much, so that we could live 

in peace.

David Morris wrote an account to Amersham 

Museum that is very interesting. He wrote that 

although Amersham was situated far away from 

the sharp end of the Second World War, the 

town played its part in the war effort through its 

people, its industry, and in providing a temporary 

home for the fighting men.

Local woodlands were used to provide camps for 

a range of personnel, including Rectory Woods, 

overlooking the old town, Piper’s Wood near 

Hyde Heath, Pollards Wood in Little Chalfont and 

Hodgemoor Woods near Chalfont St Giles. 

Coldmoreham Farm also played its part as a 

training ground for men of the 30 Assault Unit, 

a commando unit tasked with moving ahead of 

advancing allied forces, or with undertaking covert 

infiltrations into enemy territory to capture much 

needed intelligence. This unit was set up by Naval 

Intelligence, under the auspices of Ian Fleming, 

who later went on to write the James Bond novels, 

with characterisations based on the men of the 

unit. 

Rebecca Evans also gave an account to the 

Amersham Museum of events in Amersham and 

she reported that on May 8th 1945 in Amersham, 

thanksgiving services were held in the churches, 

and bells tolled throughout the day in jubilation. 

An open air dance was quickly organised in the 


Broadway, and someone mounted the Union 

Flag in a fir tree. 

In the following weeks, a VE day party was 

held for the children in tennis courts in The 

Meadows, Amersham on the Hill. On May 12th, 

Mr Alfred Woodley gave thanks to the Civil 

Defence on behalf of the people of Amersham. 

On the 25th May, another children’s party was 

held in the British Legion Hall, Whielden Street. 

When victory over Japan was announced on 

August 15th, local celebrations were organised 

but they were more subdued than the VE day 

parties earlier in the year. 

During March 1946, Amersham’s Music Festival 

was revived after six years of disruption. We are 

delighted that a new Music Festival has been

their own street parties and celebrations. Even 

if you were not born at the time of VE day, 

events have shaped our country to allow us to 

live in relative peace. It is hard to imagine what 

it was like to live during times of war if one has 

not experienced it, but we are thankful for all 

the sacrifices of life that were given and we 

hope celebrations can be had over VE bank 

holiday weekend.

The powers of 

powers of attorney 

Most people know of and understand what a Will 

is. Chances are you’ve got one. If you haven’t, 

then at least you know that you should have one. 

Fewer people know of or understand Lasting Powers 

of Attorney and yet they are just as important, if not 

potentially more so, than Wills. 

Wills deal with distribution of your assets on your 

death but what if something happens to incapacitate 

you during your lifetime, whether temporarily or 

permanently, such that you cannot deal with your own 

affairs or assets? Many people do not appreciate that 

if they no longer have legal mental capacity there 

is no automatic entitlement for a loved one (even a 

spouse or child) to help make important decisions for 

them or deal with their finances. 

The Court of Protection has to step in to appoint a 

Deputy and that is an expensive, lengthy process with 

ongoing annual fees. 

Anyone, at any time, can become incapable to legally 

manage their own affairs, sometimes temporarily, 

sometimes permanently, often unexpectedly. There 

are two common misconceptions: 

• that Lasting Powers of Attorney are only something 

to consider at the post-retirement or later-life stage 

• to associate loss of mental capacity solely with an 

illness such as Alzheimer’s when in reality it could arise 

at any time either through other illnesses or as the 

result of an accident, such as a car or sporting accident. 

Lasting Powers of Attorney allow you to ensure that 

if you become mentally incapable your affairs and 

assets can be managed on your behalf by people you 

have chosen and appointed yourself. Think of it as a 

form of ‘insurance policy’ – something you enter into 

now and which aims to protect you against problems 

that might arise in the future.

CSP Tennis Club 

bringing the 

community together! 

On Sunday 8th February Chalfont 

St Peter Tennis Club suffered huge 

damage from the wrath of storm Ciara. 

It was lucky that friends of the club spotted the 

clubhouse roof shifted as a result of storm Ciara 

and the torrential rain pouring into the interior. 

One can only imagine scenes from Wizard of Oz 

ensuing! Local roofer Geoff Rogers, the chairman 

of the committee, Mike Bird and two of his dog 

walking friends kindly helped lift the roof back on 

and batten the felt down to prevent further water 

gushing into the clubhouse. 

Despite the clubhouse being currently out of 

bounds, club members still congregated on 

Valentines morning to hold an American drive 

tournament. It was back to the 1930’s with no 

running water or toilet facilities! The clubhouse 

is slowly being fixed and luckily the 4 Tiger Turf 

courts have not been affected. 

The club instils a sense of belonging and holds 

a true community spirit for all those that are 

members. Their annual charity fundraisers are very 

successful and this year have decided to help the 

CSP Community Centre re-build. Their annual 

open day has been set for Sunday 26th April and 

to celebrate Victory in Europe 75th anniversary, 

they are holding a free public event. See advert. 

The clubhouse may not be back to its original 

state for these events, but the people belonging 

to the club make it a true community hub - not 

just bricks and mortar. Come and see for

Roadmap to 

Retirement 

In Australia, youngsters are 

encouraged to look forward 

to their “Golden Years”. 

In the UK we refer to this period of our lives 

as retirement, but for some reason this 

doesn’t seem to have quite the same ring 

to it. Golden years is when we plan to have 

time to do the things we’ve dreamt of, when 

work stress is behind us, filling our days 

with sightseeing and pastimes rather than 

commuting and meetings. 

Of course, those golden years don’t just 

appear, they do require quite a bit of planning 

and our Roadmap to Retirement we hope 

will help our clients adopt this golden years’ 

culture. 

Roadmap to Retirement isn’t just a brochure, 

it’s a financial target. We have tried to identify 

where clients should be and what they 

should be considering at various stages 

along the journey. We fully accept there will 

be many detours as this journey progresses; 

perhaps house purchase, starting a family, 

changing jobs and further down the road, 

maybe helping children onto the property 

ladder. However, our Wealth Management 

program will help you get back on the road, 

with a tank full of fuel ready for the next 

stretch. 

All this journey stuff might sound a bit 

fanciful, but the analogy is actually pretty 

good. Any long journey requires some 

detailed planning and also contingencies 

when things don’t quite go to plan. Our 

cashflow planning technology is the 

backbone to how we map out the route. 

Once we have a framework in place, that’s 

when clients can start to work towards the 

goals, we have helped identify with them. 

Along the road, we will stop now and then 

to check where we are and decide whether 

we need to pick up the pace or maybe have 

a bit more in the tank than expected. 

We often wonder whether deep down David 

Bowie wanted to be a financial adviser when 

he wrote ‘Golden Years’ back in 1975!

Amersham & Chalfonts Together is part of Community Together


BMCF help partially 

sighted children 

The BMCF (Bucks Masonic Centenary 

Fund) recently donated £1000 to purchase 

a large guillotine and artwork materials 

to help produce braille books for young 

sight-impaired children. 

Back in 2018 Buckinghamshire Freemasons raised 

over £3500, which included a donation of £500 

from Winslow Lions, to buy young Dexter Ward, 

who is severely visually impaired due to congenital 

glaucoma, a braille machine. This machine enabled 

his parents to make him braille books as there are 

very few available for young children. 

Since then they have produced four books which 

follow the adventures of ‘Scruffy the Uffy’. These 

books all have giant font, are tactile and in braille. 

All the illustrations have been prepared with sight 

impairment in mind. Dexter loves the books and 

very soon, his mother, Julie-Ann, received requests 

for the books from other families with sight impaired 

children. The books cost £8 and take an hour each 

to make, so the donation from the BMCF will make 

it possible for her to produce many more books. 

Recently Dexter, who is now 4, was visited by Bucks 

Freemasons Phil Blacklaw and John Waller to see 

how he is doing. 

They took him a TLC (Tender Loving Care) teddy, 

which he loved. Julie-Ann showed them the 

impressive set of books she has produced and 

told them of her plans to continue to produce age 

appropriate books as Dexter grows and make them 

available to other sight impaired children.

Adam has used his extensive farming knowledge 

to broadcast on TV and radio.
