Does it seem impossible to live healthy always? How is it possible to live healthy if you have a chronicdisease? Is healthy living possibly more than whetheryou have a disease or not?Living healthy refers to how you manage yourhealth in your mind, body, and spirit. As a nursepatientadvocate, I have witnessed people with seriousillnesses live better and more meaningful lives thansome that are extremely healthy and blessed withfinancial abundance. Why is this? It relates to theindividual’s overall level of wellness. The World Health Organization defined health in1948 as being “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence ofdisease or infirmity.” Later, Halbert Dunn, MD, headof the U.S. Office of Vital Statistics, wrote a book calledHigh-Level Wellness. He writes about a definition ofwellness to include the followingcore concepts:• Wellness is a continuumrather than a specific fixed state. All individuals, depending on theirparticular circumstances, are locatedsomewhere along the continuumbetween death and wellness;• Wellness is a holisticapproach to health, encompassingphysical, mental, social, culturaland spiritual dimensions;• Mental wellness is theresponsibility of the individual andcannot be delegated to someone else;• Wellness is about potential– it involves helping the individualmove toward the highest state of wellbeing of which heor she is capable;• Self-knowledge and self-integration are the keyto progress toward high-level wellness.Wellness has a history of being defined within adisease framework, meaning reducing health risks andpreventing disease. Those are good goals, but it’s anoutdated vision. A new vision has been articulated bya few innovators, including Wellness Inventory creatorDr. John Travis.Even though people often lack physical symptoms, they may still be bored, depressed, tense, anxious, orsimply unhappy with their lives. Such emotional statesoften set the stage for physical and mental disease. For true whole person life-balance and wellbeing, you need to dive deeper. To understand all that createsand supports your current state of health, you have tolook below the surface of your wellness state.
