Skills CompetitionsAlan does not have the time, likesome building colleges, to runpractice competitions.“These competitions aregood for the industry asa whole because theyconfirm the skills,knowledge and experiencethat our workforce possesses,which can be overlooked. It’s alsogood for the tutors – it makes you feelgood about the skills that you’re passing on.”Other skillsTutors agree, though, that the BMI Apprentice ofthe Year competition looks at the other qualitiesthat an apprentice will need if they are to movebeyond the tools. In their view, this schememeasures not simply whether an apprenticeknows how to install a roof correctly but also softskills like communication, marketing andcustomer service.“SkillBuild and Apprentice of the Year are atLeft: Alan King of National ConstructionCollege – South. You canturn an apprentice into a SkillBuild ninja throughpractice, practice and practice, but that isn’t thecase with Apprentice of the Year.“There is a reward for everyone, even those thatdon’t win.
