The 2020 Dragon Boat Challenge takes place on 

Sunday 2nd August as part of the annual Riverside 

Festival and is one of the largest and most eagerly 

anticipated team events in the region. 

Dragon boat racing has an ancient Chinese history 

dating back 2,000 years and according to the Chinese 

calendar, 2020 is the Year of the Rat. People born 

in this year are believed to be energetic, outgoing, 

enthusiastic and high achievers – all important 

qualities for dragon boat success in August! 

No previous experience is required to take part, just 

plenty of team spirit. The dragon boats, qualified 

helms and all racing equipment are provided and 

each crew is guaranteed a minimum of three races. 

By taking part in the Dragon Boat Challenge to raise

UNIVERSITY...OR UNIVERSITY OF 

LIFE?

I read recently that two out of 

three universities have reported 

increasing numbers of students 

dropping out. Some have a dropout 

rate of one in seven students. 

As a recruitment business who aims to offer a graduate 

placement every year we see and speak to many 

undergraduates at events such as Graduate Fairs. What 

has become increasingly apparent is that many of these 

students are pursuing courses with no clear vision of 

what to do after and where those qualifications will take 

them. Of course this is not true in all cases – especially 

for those studying the more traditional subjects and 

also vocational degrees with a clear career path. 

The increase in ‘soft’ degrees and unconditional offers 

being made has made it easy for many young adults to 

attend university where entry requirements previously 

would have made them consider other options. 

Schools and colleges are also under increasing 

pressure to encourage university attendance and 

provide data on alumni and often when I speak to 

students they have a very one dimensional view of 

options after the age of 18. 

I attended a Dragons Den type careers event recently 

where students had to present a concept or product 

to a panel of judges ( I was one). All the students did 

very well in a situation that was clearly far out of their 

comfort zone. The student who was outstanding as 

an individual had character and the ability to engage a 

whole audience. Speaking to him afterwards he told me 

he’d been working in his father’s shop since he was ten 

years old and loved having banter with the customers. 

He’d also learned about stock control, pushing 

promotions and high value goods and the benefits of a 

solid work ethic. This young man probably didn’t need a 

university degree to pursue personal success– he had 

great skills already. 

As employers, as parents and as a community we owe 

it to our youngsters to offer the right guidance which is 

relevant and timely.

Create or purchase a first aid kit. 

2. First Aid is precisely that. They’re the first steps 

to providing aid for your pet, the aim is to prevent 

damage, not cause it. 

3. If a pet becomes distressed, STOP. 

4. Always follow up any administration of first aid 

with a check-up with your vet. 

5. Never give human medicines to animals. 

6. Ensure the safety of yourself and others around 

you. Make sure you keep calm and assess the 

situation. 

7. Distressed or injured animals may demonstrate 

behavioural traits not usually associated with 

them so speak quietly and reassuringly to your 

pet. 

8. Move slowly to prevent any further distress and 

stay in view of your pet. 

9. Always phone ahead and contact your vet as 

soon as possible. 

10. Do not try to manage serious situations on your 

own.

The 

Training Tail 

It’s been a while since I’ve written about my gusset 

munching, poo rolling, cycle chasing hound, Herbie. 

Although Herbie’s behaviour wouldn’t qualify for one 

of those “Dogs Behaving Badly” programmes there 

is still substantial room for improvement. 

So, I decided to sign up to an on-line dog training 

academy, with Gary in the background shaking 

his head. After coughing up the first monthly 

instalment, I became a “gamechanger”. High five to 

that!! It’s all about using games to improve the dogs 

behaviour and we were ON it!!! I was quite excited 

when I got Harry and Herbie to “catch” a treat. 

However, all the “community” posts from fellow dog 

owners did my head in. Their capacity for asking 

stupid questions was endless. Here’s an example: 

“my question is…why do some dogs do a sphinx 

down and some dogs down is with their back legs 

out…like a frog. Is it a breed thing? If not, how would 

you train the sphinx down to the dog who has the 

frog legs down?” 

WHO CARES??**!!! – If your dog goes down on the 

command just be grateful and don’t worry whether 

his legs look like a frog, a sphinx or a chuffing 

octopus. 

Week two, we arrived with our clip on treat pouches 

(who knew??), packed with a kilo of sausages. 

I wasn’t expecting to have to use most of them 

just to get Herbie out the van! Undeterred we 

persevered, but Herbie was having none of it. After 

cocking his leg up a jump or two he made a run for 

freedom, dived under the gate and back to the van. 

We left him there to consider his future and focused 

on our star agility dog, Harry. 

At the end of the course all the dogs received an 

award. Poor Megan, who ran the course, had to 

award Herbie his rosette and certificate for...getting 

out of the van. Aim high Herbie, aim high… 

We have lots of lovely dog walking friends, many of 

whom kindly give us tips on how to deal with this 

strong willed, hairy teenager. Don’t call his name 

constantly as it becomes white noise to the dog, 

so use another noise to attract his attention. Find a 

squeaky toy that he likes and only let him play with 

it briefly, then put it away but bring it on walks so 

when he runs off, the squeak entices him back. Use 

high value treats so that he is fixated with you and 

does everything you tell him to do. If he goes too 

far in front of you, hide behind a tree so he thinks 

he’s lost you and he’ll come running back. 

In the end I had to unsubscribe – it all got too silly 

for words. 

So next we decided to try dog agility. Visions 

of Herbie leaping through flaming hoops got us 

quite excited. The first session went quite well 

considering we were woefully ill-equipped (plastic 

bags for treats is a NO NO). The dogs managed a 

few obstacles and we left feeling pretty positive. 

Crufts, here we come!! 

So now if you see a weirdo lurking behind a tree, 

hooting and squeaking, smelling of burnt liver and 

looking for a dog – you’ll know it’s Gary and that the 

training is still ongoing!

Hemlock Stone Circular Walk 

Walk distance: 4 miles 

Difficulty: Leisurely - all flat 

Walks With Emily & Friends 

Starting point: Bramcote Park car park - NG9 3JT 

Keep to the footpath and follow the route through the 

fields until you come to another estate. Keep on Mill 

Road, cross the main road on to Pinfold Lane, and then 

cross again on to Cemetery Road. Walk up the road until 

you reach the cemetery gates and walk up until you see 

a gate to a field. Walk through this and follow the path 

across the fields. 

From the car park, follow the road to the edge of the car 

park and head through the walled garden.You will soon 

reach a gate- turn left here and head towards the main 

road- Coventry Lane. 

Cross the road and follow the footpath signs through 

the gate and up the hill. Eventually you will reach the 

Hemlock Stone, a 200 million year old piece of sandstone 

from the Triassic Period. Make sure you read the signs 

and plaques by the stone to find out more about the 

history. 

Follow the footpath signs round the edge of Stapleford 

Hill eventually making your way down to the fields on 

the other side. You will get to a small stream with a little 

bridge which you will need to cross over- a great location 

to let your dog paddle. 

Follow the path along the edge of the field. When you 

reach some steps on the right, follow them up so you 

are now walking parallel to the train track. You are now 

in Pit Lane Park. Follow the footpath keeping the train 

tracks on your right until you eventually come to the car 

park. Walk through the car park and down the edge of the 

road until you come to another main road. Cross this and 

follow the footpath signs on the other side. 

At the end of the field there is another gate, turn left here 

and walk down until the path merges on to Baulk Lane. 

Follow this down, and take the alley cut through on the 

right hand side, joining Russley Road. Follow the road 

round until you reach Rufford Avenue, then turn left again 

on to Russley Road. Cross Derby Road using the zebra 

crossing and then take another cut through to the left of 

the vets. 

Turn right on to Marshall Drive and then cross Ilkeston 

Road at the top to get back into Bramcote Park. Walk 

across the park (turning left as you come through the 

gates) to get back to the car park.

You will now be walking through the Trowell Park Drive 

estate. There are clearly marked footpath signs until 

you reach a children’s play park, cross the road and walk 

around the back of this, following the path. 

As you exit the estate you will see the M1 in the distance 

and eventually the river Erewash on your right hand side. 

Keep following the route round ignoring other turn offs 

until eventually you will see some houses and come out 

onto a road (Moorbridge Lane). 

Cross the road and continue down the path through a 

farm- please note there are cows roaming here so you 

will need to keep your dog on a lead.

Having your dog, (or any pet) microchipped is one of 

the best ways to increase their chances of getting 

home if lost or stolen. Dog tags and collars may fall 

off or be removed. Don’t forget the law also says all 

dogs must wear a collar and tag, with their owners’ 

name, address and telephone number on it. 

Since April 2016 it has been a legal requirement for a 

dog to be microchipped to his or her current keepers 

at their present address, owners face fines of £500 

if they fail to comply! The law also requires that the 

details registered are up to date with your current 

address and contact numbers. 

You should ask your vet to scan your dog’s microchip 

at routine visits to ensure that it is working correctly 

and also ask them to check the registered details. 

Currently there is no requirement for vets to do this. 

Rarely, microchips can fail or migrate, a check will 

show it is working as it should!

if you have not received a certificate of

Tasty Thai 

Thai food is my absolute favourite. The hot, sour, 

sweet and salty flavours of the cuisine really do 

transport you all the way to Thailand. Looking out 

the window at a miserable, rainy February day it’s 

exactly what I need! 

I have been cooking Thai recipes for years and 

through trial and error have discovered some 

crucial facts that make the difference between a 

so-so curry and a really amazing one. 

First, the coconut milk. Forget the supermarket 

brands. The one you want is CHAOKOH 

(pictured). Plenty of supermarkets stock it. Or try 

an Asian supermarket. I always buy a few tins to 

keep handy. It really is worth seeking out. And it’s 

no more expensive. 

Next, the curry paste. I am too lazy to make my 

own paste from scratch. The one I use is MAE 

PLOY (pictured). They do loads of different types. 

The Thai green and red pastes are the ones I 

use most often. It lasts ages and is so strong 

that only use half of what the recipe tells you. 

Again, most Asian supermarkets sell this. You 

can even order it from Amazon. 

My final tip for an authentic curry is to use Thai or 

Holy basil at the end of the dish. They sell this in 

Sainsburys and it makes a huge difference to the 

taste of the dish. 

If all this is too much, you could do worse than 

get the bus into town and visit ZAAP, the Thai 

street food restaurant. Sit in a Tuk Tuk with a 

Singha beer and you could be in Bangkok.

Thai Prawn Red 

Curry 

2 x 180g packs frozen uncooked 

prawns 

400ml can coconut milk 

1 tbsp Thai red curry paste 

1 tbsp oil - we used coconut oil 

30gm pack Thai basil leaves 

2 tbsp fish sauce 

2 tbsp brown sugar 

200g green beans - halved and 

blanched 

1 x red chilli - finely chopped 

Heat a large shallow pan on a medium 

heat - add oil, then add curry paste, stir 

for 2 mins. Pour in the coconut milk, stir 

well. Then add the fish sauce, brown 

sugar and chopped chilli. Let this bubble 

away gently for 5 mins. Add the prawns 

and beans and cook until the prawns 

are pink. Throw in the basil leaves and 

serve with Thai jasmine rice and prawn 

crackers. Serves 4 adults. 

Thai Fish Cakes 

250g prawns 

250g boneless, skinless white fish 

(we used cod) 

1 red chilli – finely chopped 

4 spring onions – roughly chopped 

1 lemon grass stalk – roughly 

chopped 

1 lime – zest 

1 tbsp Thai red curry paste 

1 tsp fish sauce 

Fresh chopped coriander (handful) 

Salt and black pepper 

Groundnut oil 

Put prawns, fish, chilli, spring onions, 

lemon grass, curry paste, lime zest, fish 

sauce and coriander in a food processor 

and whiz to a smooth consistency. 

Season, transfer to a bowl and chill in the 

fridge for a couple of hours. 

Divide the mixture into 10 even sized 

portions, shape into small patties and 

either shallow fry in groundnut oil until 

browned both sides or spray with 

cooking oil spray and oven cook at 

180°C on a lined baking tray for about 15 

mins flipping half way. 

Serve with Thai sweet chilli dipping sauce 

and the noodle salad. 

Thai Noodle Salad 

250g straight to wok rice noodles 

1 carrot – grated 

¼ red cabbage – shredded 

100g beansprouts 

4 x spring onions – sliced 

Small bunch coriander – chopped 

75g dry-roasted peanuts – smashed 

Dressing 

1 x garlic – crushed 

1 x tbsp ginger – grated 

1 x lime – juiced 

1 tbsp fish sauce 

2 tsp tamarind paste 

1 tbsp honey 

1 tbsp soy sauce 

1tbsp chilli sauce 

½ tsp sesame oil 

2 tbsp smooth peanut butter 

Empty the noodles into a large bowl 

and loosen with your hands. Add all 

the vegetables. Blend all the dressing 

ingredients to a smooth consistency in 

a blender or with a hand blender. Add 

to the noodle bowl and mix thoroughly. 

Garnish with coriander and the peanuts. 

Delicious served with the Thai fishcakes.

Some things we do at work: 

• If we have something at home going off 

and are unable to use it - we bring it in 

and someone else will take it home and 

cook with it. 

• If we have made too much soup/stew/ 

salad the night before we WhatsApp the 

team and offer the extra for lunch the 

next day. Always a bonus! 

• We share our leftover recipes - of which 

we have many! 

• The freezer is our friend. If we make a big 

stew half of it gets boxed up and used 

another day. Maybe as a pie. Be inventive! 

• We love a rollover dinner. So one night 

we might have spaghetti bolognese. The 

following night we might have the meat 

sauce in a lasagne or burrito. The night 

after we might have the leftover spaghetti 

made into a frittata. The possibilities are 

endless. Google is your friend. 

• Plan, plan, plan. We make meal plans for 

the week - only buy what we need. 

To help reduce food waste in 

Nottinghamshire, Veolia (Nottinghamshire 

County Council’s waste contractors) have 

some top tips and easy leftover recipes to 

help love your leftovers. 

There are a wide range of factors that 

contribute to causing food waste, for 

example: shopping without checking 

what’s already at home or cooking too 

much pasta because it’s difficult to know 

how much to make.

Nottinghamshire said: “Our busy lives 

mean we often leave salads to wilt in their 

bags, end up chucking out half a loaf of 

stale bread, and find forgotten punnets of 

gone-off fruit because we overestimate 

how much we’ll eat. When it comes to food, 

we’re spoiled rotten.” 

We throw away the equivalent of 3.5 meals 

per person every week in the UK. That 

wasted food costs money – roughly £230 

per person annually in the UK – and the 

amount of C02 it emits is equal to that 

generated by 1 in 4 of the cars on our 

roads. But this doesn’t have to be the case. 

Victoria added: “There are lots of ways that 

everyone can take individual action and 

change their food wastage habits, from 

over-buying milk “just in case” to buying a 

bag of apples when the recipe only needs 

one or two.”

Top tips to help save food from being wasted - and save some money:

This recipe is made with leftover chicken (possibly from a Sunday roast), rice, carrots, 

peppers and salad etc. Can be frozen when cold in plastic containers. Defrost and heat 

through completely in an oven when required.

anna’s loved ones walk in 

her memory 

by Maggie’s Centres 

Anna first came to Maggie’s when she was 

diagnosed with incurable cancer aged 34. After 

receiving support from the team at Nottingham, 

she decided she wanted to give something back 

and became a volunteer. 

After being a fantastic centre volunteer for over four 

years, Anna sadly passed away in September 2018. 

She was an important part of the Maggie’s team, and 

will continue to be missed by us. 

When Anna told us about the first time she came to 

Maggie’s, she said: 

“I have a very supportive family, but sometimes you 

need to talk to people who really understand what 

you’re going through. Maggie’s made me feel really 

welcomed.” 

On Saturday 9 March 2019, Anna’s friends and family 

got together to walk 9 miles and raise funds in her 

memory. A year later, the same walking group are 

going to be taking on the challenge again in memory 

of Anna. 

“We know Anna would want lots of other families 

affected by cancer to benefit from the amazing care 

at Maggie’s.” - Lucy Morley, Anna’s friend 

Thanks to the efforts of all the team members, they 

raised an incredible amount of £1,700 to help us 

fund the centre and are aiming to raise an amazing

The Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance is offering 

supporters the chance to take part in one of two 

incredible overseas challenges to help raise 

money for the life-saving service. 

The Charity is offering the two once-in-a-lifetime 

opportunities for those with a thirst for adventure, 

with both overseas challenges taking place in 

September this year. Adrenaline junkies can choose 

to take on either the Moroccan 3 Peaks Challenge, or 

the Kili 2 Coast cycle challenge. 

The awe-inspiring trek across the Moroccan 3 

Peaks, which will take 5 days to complete, will see 

participants reaching breathtaking heights that host 

some of the most spectacular views. 

Avid cyclists are encouraged to take on the Charity’s 

Kili 2 Coast cycle challenge, which will see riders 

take on the 430km route over 6 days. Participants 

will begin their journey from the foot of Mount 

Kilimanjaro, before heading out towards the tropical 

paradise of the Indian Ocean.

If you are thinking of doing something worthwhile 

this year, read on... 

Volunteering for Macmillan Beyond Diagnosis not 

only changed my life but also the lives of those 

I helped to support. A year on and I am now the 

Volunteer Coordinator searching for more volunteers 

to join Macmillan Beyond Diagnosis. 

Our organisation provides emotional and practical 

support to anyone affected by cancer. We are looking 

for volunteers in Nottingham for just 1-2 hours a week 

to provide a listening ear and someone to talk to, for 

someone on their cancer journey and their families. 

Support can be delivered either on an ongoing basis 

or as a one off. A full day’s Macmillan training will be 

provided. 

Do you have the ability to communicate clearly with 

others, excellent listening skills, empathy and the 

ability to respond to the needs of others? Are you 

reliable and able to work independently with guidance 

and support? If you would like to join our volunteer 

team we would love to hear from you.

Perfect Primulas 

The name primula comes from 

the Latin for “first” and the 

native primula (primula vulgaris) 

is a herald of spring in many 

woodlands. There are many 

types of primula, some common 

and easy and others rare and 

requiring special conditions. 

Primulas are easy from seed but 

do best from fresh seed, sown 

immediately. The seed compost 

must not dry out – cover the seed 

tray with a sheet of glass or a 

clear plastic bag. In the right 

conditions seed can germinate in 

3 weeks or so. 

Once the plants have clumped 

up it is best to divide them after 

flowering. Dig up and break 

into individual rosettes. Shorten 

the leaves by half and replant or 

pot up the small plants and keep 

moist and shaded while they get 

established. 

The cowslip (Primula veris) is one 

of the most accommodating, 

even growing on dry, sunny 

banks and seedling around to 

form large colonies naturalised 

in grass. Hybrids of these natives 

gave us the polyanthas – wellloved 

bedding plants that flower 

every year if divided regularly. 

One of my favourites is the gold 

lace type with its yellow centre 

and gold-edged almost black 

petals. 

Some of the most dramatic and 

easy to grow are the candelabra 

primulas with their multiple whorls 

of flowers along upright stems. 

There are many colours and 

hybrids to choose from including 

bessiana (pink), bulleyana 

(orange), pulverulenta (deep 

pink) and the dramatic Inverewe 

(burnt orange). These need 

damp conditions and are often 

grown next to streams and ponds 

or in woodland boggy areas. 

Another favourite is the drumstick 

primula (P. denticulata) with its 

short flower stems topped with a 

ball of flowers in white, blue or 

pink. These tolerate slightly drier 

conditions but must not dry out 

completely if they are to do well. 

Primulas can be subject to a 

few pests and by far the most 

devastating is vine weevil which 

seems to have a special liking for 

fleshy roots. The grubs are small 

and white with a brown head. If 

plants flag in the spring sunshine, 

dig them up and search out the 

grubs and destroy them or feed 

them to your local robin! Replant 

the plants. Apart from that most 

gardeners will find primulas easy 

to grow and trouble free.

With Citroën introducing their 

great looking C5 Aircross not so 

long ago, a car which harks back 

to the innovations and Gallic 

eccentricities of days gone by, it 

would seem like a more than ideal 

opportunity to assess what’s been 

going on with what Citroën are 

calling their ‘Comfort class SUV.’ 

The exterior of the C5 with a 

particularly distinctive front end 

displaying halogen headlights (low 

& high beam), front fog lights with 

cornering function, incredibly sleek 

LED day-time running lights, LED 

front indicators and that rather 

iconic double chevron design 

front grille. At the bottom of the 

doors Citroën have deployed their 

unique and distinctive Airbump® 

(bodywork saving) technology 

whilst subtle use of chrome on the 

window surrounds and rear privacy 

glass helps to create a rather more 

upmarket look than is perhaps the 

norm. 

You’ve got a typical SUV driving 

position affording you great all 

round visibility, a premium feel 

from the extremely comfortable 

grey grained leather and graphite 

cloth seats complementing the 

grey centre console and dash. 

And then there’s the horizontal 

lines of the dashboard which 

subtly incorporate a range of 

useful technology such as the 8”

area where the C5 Aircross 

doesn’t disappoint, highlights of 

which, in MotorMartin’s opinion,

departure warning system to name 

but a few. All of this technology is 

no good though if it creates a drive 

that feels too distant or uninvolved 

for all concerned, after all you 

expect a little something extra 

when driving a Citroën, something 

that harks back to and celebrates 

the avant-garde history behind the 

marque. 

Once driving you quickly realise 

how successfully this C5 links with 

models gone by as the quality 

of the ride is sublime. Citroën 

themselves call this the flying carpet 

effect and explain how their newly 

developed Progressive Hydraulic 

Cushions® help to redefine pure 

driving comfort. Smoothing away 

both large bumps and minor 

surface imperfections. But does it 

work? The short answer is yes, the 

longer answer is most definitely. 

Longer journeys become a luxury 

to look forward to rather than a 

chore, exactly as they should be 

when owning a larger Citroën. 

The engine in this particular C5 

is the BlueHDi 130 S&S iteration 

which provides 129 bhp at 3750 

rpm. There’s torque of 300 Nm at 

1750 rpm, CO2 emissions of 108 

g/km and a maximum claimed 

economy of up to 56.3 mpg 

and this from a turbo charged 

direct injection diesel engine only 

displacing 1499cc! 

It’s safe to say that the Citroën 

C5 Aircross BlueHDi 130 S&S EAT8 

automatic is an excellent choice 

for the modern driver who wants 

something a little different from 

the mainstream. Someone who 

appreciates that style, comfort 

and practicality can combine in 

such a way that you wonder why it 

hasn’t been done before. At least 

by someone other than Citroën 

that is. Put simply, this is a great car.

Our cinemas are filled with 

heroes; from those in flying 

suits of armour to ones that 

are really strong and sticky. 

It’s easy to forget that in our history live reallife 

heroes. Young men that had greatness 

thrust upon them in our darkest time. It is 

these heroes, the brave soldiers of the 

First World War that are the focus of Sam 

Mendes’ latest emotionally gripping and 

visually arresting film: 1917. 

Not much can be levied against 1917, if 

anything at all. This grounded and personal 

story of two soldiers delivering a message 

that will save 1600 lives is beautifully 

told through a mostly single shot view. 

Technically, this feat is astounding, but 

what this view also does is really place the 

audience on this journey with the two young 

soldiers through this war-torn land. 

And what helps enhance this immersion is 

the painstaking and heart breaking detail 

put into the authentic sets of the film, from 

the corpse littered fields to the desperate 

trenches. 

Couple all of this with the phenomenal 

acting on show from all who grace the 

screen and 1917 is an exhausting ride you 

can’t look away from, and won’t want to.

LITTLE WOMEN 

Aspiring New York writer Jo nervously 

reassures herself before submitting 

her papers over to a hard-eyed 

publisher. Obviously, a writer doesn’t draw 

experiential linguistic power out of thin air, as we 

then delve into her lengthy childhood backstory 

of maturing into womanhood alongside her three 

close but often conflicting sisters in a nostalgic 

view of the ballroom-bantering 1800s. 

If there’s one point to make about Little 

Women regarding its source material, it’s that 

it’s more of a celebration than a direct stylistic 

incorporation. The film abandons the novel’s 

linear narrative and uses flashbacks to a more 

comfortable past to contrast to the present day 

struggles. Scenes of past youthful siblinghood 

where the four sisters converse united 

under their mother’s roof have an air of pure 

nostalgic bliss. 

Beyond the grand style of its sets, the film’s heart 

is in the dialogue and subtle human development, 

which it gratefully takes whopping spoonfuls of 

from the book. But it does so without messily 

dolloping them into conventional film format. 

Natural but electrically-paced dialogue keeps the 

characters on their toes and makes them instantly 

well-rounded. Saoirse Ronan brings her part as 

the youthful protagonist Jo greatly to life and 

Emma Watson and Florence Pugh bringing stellar 

energy to sisters Meg and Amy. 

Little Women is a tale of both a woman’s 

independence and the hardships of sisterly bonds. 

Its poetic soul is always expressed with excellent 

performance, faithful witty dialogue and gorgeous 

set pieces that brings Alcott’s world to life.

NEW ARRIVALS ARE PRIDE OF SAFARI PARK… 

The cat’s out of the bag at West Midland Safari Park as 

keepers announce the exciting arrival of two litters of 

incredibly cute African lion cubs. 

Scar (10 years old) gave birth to three cubs on 27 Aug and 

Amber (7) to the second litter of four cubs three weeks 

later on 17 Sept. 

As with all animals born at the Park in 2019, keepers have 

chosen names for the cubs beginning with the letter ‘H’. 

Scar’s cubs have been called Hunter, Hercules and 

Hernatty (two males and a female), whilst Amber’s 

are named Harabi, Hodge, Havoc and Hira (three 

males and a female). 

Head Keeper of Carnivores, Chris Hodgkins, said, 

“We are so excited to share our news about our 

latest arrivals. As both Scar and Amber are first-time 

mums, we wanted to disturb them as little as possible, so 

this has meant keeping them away from the rest of the 

pride in a special area of our lion house.” 

“At eight weeks and twelve weeks old after their 

vaccinations, we mixed the mothers and cubs together. 

The cubs instantly started playing together, chasing each 

other around and jumping all over both mums. They have 

been inseparable ever since and we often find them all 

cosied up together or playing.” 

In February keepers introduced the cubs to dad, Tsavo and 

uncles Jilani and Jengo and then to the rest of the pride. 

Guests can now get their first glimpses of the fearsome 

felines, on the drive-through safari. 

West Midland Safari Park is now open daily. Admission 

prices are £24.00 for adults, £20.00 for children aged 3-15 

years and £22.00 for concessions. Children under the age 

of three are free.

If comedy is your thing then you’ll 

be pleased to know we get a visit 

from La Voix at the Nottingham 

Arts Theatre (7 March). Expect

mesmerising impressions of the 

world’s biggest divas and buckets 

full of energy. 

For foodies, you could try a 

seasonal tasting menu at 

Langar Hall. Indulge, discover and 

enjoy on the last Friday of every 

month (27 March/24 April). Also 

keep a look out for another in the 

series of Food Talks at Lakeside 

Arts. March’s theme is Food and 

Poverty (25 March). 

If you prefer a little art, my two 

picks are the Brick by Brick 

exhibition at the Harley Gallery 

which runs until 7 April and 

showcases 18 international visual 

artists who have taken inspiration 

from LEGO® bricks. Using the 

simple plastic construction block 

as their starting point, each artist 

has created stunning, thought 

provoking and often humorous 

artworks which will appeal to art 

enthusiasts and LEGO fans alike. 

There’s also Matt Woodham’s 

debut solo exhibition, Sensing 

Systems (up to 28 March). 

Bonington Gallery will be filled 

with a composition of connected 

installations, positioning visitors 

within a system of light, sound and 

motion. Visual and kinetic events 

will be sequenced by a central 

processing unit that distributes 

signals around the room. The 

audience can interact with the 

system. 

For something completely different 

over the next couple of months, 

Robin Hood Live takes place 

(4-5 April). This unique immersive 

experience will take you back 

to 12th Century Nottingham to 

witness the epic struggle between 

the Sheriff of Nottingham and 

Robin Hood. 

Join the Magnificent Spiegeltent 

for 19 days of wonder (29 April 

- 17 May). In partnership with 

Nottingham BID, the Spiegeltent 

is back, bigger and better than 

ever! The beautiful, century-old 

travelling dance hall, made of 

wood and complete with ornate 

decoration and mirrors, will host a 

packed schedule of great events, 

including music, circus, cabaret, 

theatre, comedy and burlesque, 

with something for the entire 

family, plus food and drink. 

Speaking of old things, the 

Arnold Local History Group has, 

over the years, accumulated a 

considerable amount of archive 

film of ‘Old Arnold’. This has now 

been digitised, some of which 

has never previously been seen

As Spring is upon us we welcome 

some outdoor events. Visit the 

magnificent setting of Green’s 

Windmill for their traditional 

Spring Fayre (21 March). There

An Eventing Spring Carnival 

takes place at Thoresby 

(27-29 March). Three days of 

great family entertainment starring 

world class equestrian riders. 

When visitors need to take a break 

and refuel, they will be spoilt for 

choice. There will be a Street Food 

Festival with a range of tempting 

stalls and bars to keep people 

going, offering everything from 

gourmet burgers to Indian street 

food, and from craft beer to a Gin 

Den. The carnival will host a wide 

range of attractions for all the 

family to enjoy from dog agility, 

children’s entertainment and a 

shopping village. 

As always, don’t forget that there 

is history and interest right on your 

doorstep throughout the year with 

the many tours on offer throughout

The Oxjam Beeston Team are looking back on 

another fantastic festival last year, when the 

community came together to enjoy local music 

whilst raising an incredible £26,460 for Oxfam’s 

international emergency aid and development 

work, bringing the running total of money raised 

since the first festival in 2011 to £137,000! 

Organised by a dedicated team of committed 

volunteers, the big Takeover Day in October saw a 

further 90 local residents give a few hours to help 

everything run smoothly, whilst also enjoying the 

festival. Furthermore the hundreds of musicians, 

keen to perform each year in pubs, bars, cafes and 

community venues throughout the town, do so for 

free. 

The team are grateful to Headline Sponsors The 

Star Inn, and stage sponsors: J Flynn Optician, CP 

Walker, and Foster Industrial. There was also funding 

from two local county councillors.

Bluecoat Wollaton Academy has been awarded 

a coveted ‘world class’ status in a celebration of 

educational excellence at Cambridge University. 

The World Class Schools Quality Mark (WCSQM) 

is only awarded to non-selective schools offering 

the highest standard of education to young people 

and Principal of Bluecoat Wollaton Academy, Stuart 

Anderson, said the accreditation standards were 

appropriately high. “We decided to take up this 

challenge as it was the logical progression for the 

school after our ‘outstanding’ Ofsted and a chance to 

really push beyond that and not simply stand still as 

a school.” 

Year 11 student, Reuben Hallsworth-Woods, was 

a member of the student team who worked on the 

challenge and said staff input was kept minimal to 

let the students lead. Fellow participant Jack Magner 

(Year 10), said the team worked diligently to show the 

many aspects of their school life. 

Following the award Bluecoat Wollaton Academy 

become part of the alumni for the World Class 

Schools Quality Mark and will help to assess other 

schools applying for the coveted standard. 

Principal Stuart Anderson said the news was 

received with joy by the academy, and the wider 

Archway Learning Trust, of which it is a member 

school.

THE 2020 

WORKOUT 

While over the holiday period I’ve had my head 

down, building OnePoundCoaching.com, I kept 

asking myself, what would be the best way be to help 

you gain the best out of your 2020 exercise??? 

This article is for those who need a good solid base 

to work from. I’ve just finished explaining to one 

of my clients about what is really required when it 

comes to positive health improvements and exercise 

and it’s pretty simple. 

Here are some exercises that you can perform from 

home with little or ZERO equipment. They will help 

you lose fat and get stronger, all with the aid of 

TEMPO (the speed you perform a movement). 

WHAT’S REQUIRED? 

Actually, very little. The common misconception with 

exercise is that we need lots of different exercises to 

drop unwanted body fat. Not true. When it comes 

to fat loss it’s as simple as calories in vs calories out 

(burned). If I told you, you could perform the same 

movements over and over again so long as there is 

some sort of progression to the exercise over time… 

would you believe me? 

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE TEMPO. 

Here’s how to do it… 

2020 (the 2020 workout) 

2 seconds stretch 

0 seconds pause 

2 seconds contraction 

0 seconds pause 

Perform all the exercises listed below with a 2020 

tempo and see how much more difficult a simple 

movement becomes. Feel free to add in any 

additional exercises you enjoy. 

Press ups – 3 x 10 

Squats – 3 x 20 

Split squat – 3 x 12 

TRX row – 3 x 15 

TRX bicep curl – 3 x 10 

Abs crunch – 3 x 10 

Lying leg raise – 3 x 10 

Be sure to follow the 2020 tempo… once this 

becomes too easy increase to a 3030 tempo. 

You’ll still make progress even though all you have 

changed is how fast you move.

If you’ve never read this column before 

you’ll have missed the fact that I am 

attempting to stave off any admittance of 

impending middle-age. It’s coming down the 

tracks like a freight train but I’m confident that if I do 

my best impression of an ostrich I can pretend it’s 

not actually happening. Unfortunately, life seems to 

be conspiring against me at every turn. And perhaps 

even more worryingly, I don’t think I mind too much.

I imagined the house in a state of 

complete disrepair, possibly even 

falling down. My wife loves to calm 

my fears by telling me how long the 

house has stood for. I like to remind 

her that it just means we’re closer to 

the fact that it’ll fall down one day. 

I think we balance each other out 

pretty well. 

So far I’ve worried about hair loss, bemoaned the fact 

that my children are taking up my hobbies, despaired 

at my increasing inability to be any good at computer 

games, and many more things besides. So I’m in 

need of a few easy wins, and recently my luck turned. 

To provide a bit of context, I have a habit of overly 

worrying about the state of our house. This manifests 

as either tidying up after the children while muttering 

under my breath, or being overly concerned about 

small things that I think could become bigger issues. 

The latter mostly stems from years ago when I was 

convinced that I could hear water dripping above 

our bedroom. My wife (who is much more relaxed 

about life than me) told me to stop worrying and 

that I must be imagining things. I disagreed and 

became convinced that I must have bat-like hearing. 

Anyway, fast forward to a future night when I hear 

the unmistakable sound of water dripping onto wood. 

The tiny noise I’d heard previously turned out to be 

an actual issue and we had water leaking from the 

chimney, through our ceiling and onto our bedroom 

floor. I was vindicated! And ever since I’ve seen this as 

a reason to ignore my wife’s perfectly sound advice 

about random noises around the house. 

Since then we moved house, decorated, and started 

putting our mark on the new place. And then I 

started noticing just how much condensation we 

were getting at the back of the house. North facing 

if you’re interested, on a bit of a hill, and in winter 

nothing stops the attack of cold air against our home. 

You can already guess how interested the rest of the 

family were about this. What was I worrying about? 

Obviously nothing, it’s no big deal, everyone gets 

condensation, it’ll pass, we’ll just dry the windows 

every morning, don’t worry about those bits of mould, 

it’s not too bad. But I couldn’t let it go. I felt like the 

So I started doing what anyone in my position 

would do: I researched the hell out of it. If anyone 

out there ever needs the lowdown on condensation 

I can confidently tell you I’m your man. It became a 

bit of an obsession if I’m honest. If you ever looked 

at my web footprint you’d realise just how dull I had 

become. But I made the leap, and more importantly 

convinced the wife that we needed a dehumidifier. 

And when I say ‘convinced’, what I mean is that I said 

‘we need a dehumidifier’ and her response was ‘if 

that’s what you want to spend your money on, go 

for it’. 

Now, this may sound like hyperbole but it’s possibly 

the greatest thing I’ve ever bought. It actually works. 

Call me cynical, but I wasn’t expecting much. Now 

the condensation has been completely banished 

overnight. I may have commented to the wife that it’s 

better than my own children insofar as it always does 

what I want and doesn’t ever answer back. 

So my most current concerns have been banished 

with the helping hand of technology. Though this 

does send a clear signal 

that I have firmly arrived in 

middle age. Now we just 

need a tumble dryer and a 

new garage door!

children who are either 

going to keep me eternally 

young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing 

some of my experiences of parenthood and my terrible 

attempts at staying relevant!
