Deadly intersections to be made safer

2018 based on crash statistics. 

There have been two fatal 

crashes, one serious, and nine 

minor at the intersection since 

2011. Two people died in a 

crash there in February 2018. 

There has also been one 

serious crash and two non-injury 

crashes at the intersection.

around Prebbleton as this 

area continues to grow.”

Flood danger 

to majority

JUST OVER 23,000 properties in 

the district could be affected by 

a major flood in the future a new 

report has found. 

Computer-modelling has found 

23,500 properties are affected in 

some way by flood hazard which 

means there are areas on their 

property that might be at least 

5cm under water if a one-in-200- 

year flood occurs. 

Mayor Sam Broughton said it is 

the majority of properties in the 

district. 

“What surprised me the most 

was the extensiveness of it. This is 

data that we have received from Environment 

Canterbury and it isn’t 

just picking one or two properties 

but looking at flooding across the 

district,” Mr Broughton said. 

“It is too early to tell if the new 

information will lead to further 

flood protection work in the 

district.” 

Councillor Sophie McInnes said 

“People shouldn’t panic. The data 

is based on computer-modelling 

that is happening nationwide. 

This is not just something that is 

happening in Selwyn.” 

The district council, with the help 

of ECan, carried out computerbased 

flood modelling to predict 

the extent and depth of flooding 

that could happen during a onein-200

ROUNDABOUTS for two of the district’s 

trickiest and dangerous intersections are 

long overdue. 

On page 1 today, we report the district 

council has finally approved roundabouts 

for the Springs/Marshs and Shands/Blakes 

intersections. 

They can be nightmares to get across and while dropping the 

speed limits on Springs and Shands has made it less treacherous, 

it is not by much. 

Many frustrated drivers trying to get across Marshs and 

Blakes, or turning right into Springs and Shands, will put the 

foot down to beat oncoming vehicles. 

The roundabouts won’t be in place until mid next year, but at 

least they are going in.

Lincoln University cows used 

for ‘cruel and barbaric’ research

HOLES HAVE been cut into 

the sides of cows as part of 

an experiment at a Lincoln 

University research facility. 

An animal rights group has 

called the procedure, “cruel, 

insensitive and barbaric.” 

The procedure is called fistulating 

which involves cutting a 15cm 

hole into the side of a cow to gain 

direct access to their stomachs. 

A permanent plastic ring is 

fitted into the hole with a lid on 

it, so researchers can put their 

arms straight 

inside a cow’s 

stomach, to 

allow contents 

to be removed 

or chemicals directly 

inserted.

animals must be approved by 

the Lincoln University Animal 

Ethics Committee and meet the 

standards of the University’s 

Code of Ethical Conduct for the 

Use of Animals and the Animal

said. 

“The LUAEC ensures that all 

research, testing and teaching by 

Lincoln University involving animals 

is conducted according to the 

CEC and Animal Welfare Act.” 

Animal rights group New 

Zealand Anti-Vivisection Society 

has strongly condemned the 

procedure, saying cows can still 

suffer from the intrusive surgery 

up to 11 days after the surgery. 

Executive director Tara Jackson 

said the experiments, the 

most “gruesome she’d ever seen” 

are being done to enhance the 

animal agriculture industry. 

“Can you imagine poking 

your arm inside living being’s 

stomach? Yet again, animals are 

treated as test subjects,” she said. 

“I think for a lot of Kiwis, it 

would be quite a shock to see the 

link between animal testing and 

animal agriculture sector. You 

definitely don’t pick up a carton 

of milk and think ‘oh was animal 

testing conducted for this product’ 

so it is a whole other side of 

it that is quite hidden. 

“This procedure is the epitome 

of using cows as mere objects, 

like cars with gas tanks. Cows 

are intelligent and sensitive animals 

who do not deserve to be 

tortured for any reason.” 

The procedure is generally 

done to examine the contents of 

the cow’s stomach in the name 

of research to improve the cow’s 

milk production or decrease its 

methane production. 

NZAVS have uncovered a 

range of different research papers 

online which show the procedure 

has been used at Lincoln University 

as early as 1994. 

The Lincoln University spokesperson 

said there was no current 

research in progress. 

The cows involved in the 

research would will remain 

fistulated for the duration of 

their life. 

“The cows are retained for 

future research and remain 

under the supervision of the 

LUAEC and day-to-day care of 

professionally trained staff,” the 

spokesperson said.

EVENTS CANCELLED 

Two events in the district 

have been postponed due to 

Covid-19. The Hororata Primary 

School’s 150th jubilee planned 

for this weekend has been put on 

hold. Committee chairman Rod 

Oliver said they hope to still hold 

the event within the year. The 

Lincoln Envirotown Trust’s Kim 

Hill Hop Topic event on March 

26 has also been postponed. A 

new date will be announced in 

the future. 

MYSTERIOUS CAR FIRE 

Firefighters in Darfield were 

called after a blaze in a burntout 

vehicle mysteriously reignited 

on McLaughlins Rd on 

Sunday. Members of the Darfield 

Volunteer Fire Brigade were 

called to the fire at 2.33pm. 

A Fire and Emergency NZ 

spokeswoman said the car had 

initially caught fire on Saturday 

night but then somehow it had 

re-ignited. She said the car had 

no registration number and was 

likely dumped in the area. While 

the fire may have re-ignited by 

itself, the spokeswoman said 

the cause is not yet known. 

Meanwhile, a fire engulfed an 

old hay shed in Sheffield in the 

early hours of Sunday morning. 

Fire crews from the Sheffield and 

Springfield stations were called 

to fight the blaze on West Coast 

Rd, Sheffield, about 12.56am.

issues, particularly for traffic

for funding due to shortfalls.

from flooding,” Mr Harris said. 

In the meantime, any new

Submissions sought on bylaw

RESIDENTS WILL get to 

have their say on whether 

cats should be controlled 

under a new bylaw. 

A report presented at a 

district council meeting 

last week recommended 

cats be excluded from the 

bylaw about the keeping of 

animals, other than dogs, 

in urban areas. 

But district councillors 

agreed to include them in 

the consultation document 

meaning people will get 

to make submissions on 

the options for addressing 

issues with cats. 

A draft bylaw will now 

be drawn up and sent to 

township committees 

in June or July. It 

will also include rules 

around the keeping of 

poultry and bees. 

The tabled report 

said: “Provisions 

relating to the 

de-sexing and 

microchipping of cats are 

problematic with issues. 

“These include the quantification 

of the perceived 

problems caused by cats, 

doubt that the provisions

impact on the perceived

and a risk that the provisions 

will be found to be 

unreasonable,” it 

said.

Hornby’s support in fight against waste plant

A group of Prebbleton and 

Hornby residents attended the 

Christchurch City Council meeting 

on Thursday – with many 

dressed in protective suits and 

masks.

Waste Management has applied 

to expand its current site 

and operate the toxic waste treatment 

plant at 305 Marshs Rd in 

South Hornby. 

In its resource consent application, 

it said the plant will 

treat and manage items, such as 

pesticides, acid, used tyres and 

other types of rubbish.

people are in mourning. The 

Waipuna area is in mourning 

because city council staff have 

shown a total lack of respect for 

this area by issuing consents to 

put this in here. 

“No public consultation was 

called and residents in our area 

weren’t consulted denying them 

their democratic right to speak 

out on whether locals wanted 

this or not,” Mr Houliston said. 

It followed a deputation on 

Thursday from Ms White on how 

the plant could impact the area. 

Resource consent was granted 

for the proposed plant by the city 

council in December 2018. 

Environment Canterbury also 

granted three consents for its 

construction and discharge of 

stormwater in March 2019. 

The consent application currently 

with ECan is only for 

activities resulting in discharge 

to air. 

It ran a limited notified 

consent process, which meant 

only people within 500m of the 

proposed facility had a chance to 

have their say. 

“The GHRA therefore asks this 

consent be placed on hold and a 

full and open consultation process 

take place,” Mr Houliston 

said. 

The GHRA has also requested 

permanent full monitoring 

equipment be installed around 

the perimeter of waste management’s 

holding ground and a repeat 

of this equipment at 250m, 

500m and 750m. 

“This equipment should be applied 

at the applicant’s expense, 

include dust, smell monitors as 

well as noise control monitors,” 

Mr Houliston said. 

On top of his requests, on 

Thursday morning he filed a 

Local Government Official 

Information and Meetings Act 

request to the city council over 

the treatment plant. 

Mr Houliston has asked for 

a full list of chemicals, toxins, 

hazards and any other items to 

be kept on the site along with a 

full health and safety plan.

OVER THE last month, we have 

been busy with a number of 

incidents occurring across the 

district. 

A number of residents may have 

heard the police Eagle helicopter 

flying over the area in recent 

weeks. The helicopter has assisted 

local staff to apprehend offenders 

and hold them to account. 

One incident involved Eagle 

following three vehicles seen 

decamping from a dwelling 

burglary in Selwyn, the vehicles 

were tracked by the helicopter 

and local staff were able to stop 

the vehicles and arrest the occupants. 

It helped locate a vehicle that 

has previously been involved in a 

police pursuit that was abandoned 

due to the driving of the 

offender, this vehicle was followed 

by Eagle and local police 

were directed to where the vehicle 

and occupants were hiding. 

It also located a drunk driver 

travelling back from Akaroa 

where members of the public had 

called police concerned with the 

manner of driving. 

Another event that occurred in 

the district was a search warrant 

that was executed on a property 

occupied by a number of gang 

members, a large number of 

police staff were involved in the 

operation. 

Firearms, drugs and other 

property of interest were located 

and a number of people from the 

address are facing charges. 

In the last few weeks, I have 

been able to attend meetings 

with our local community 

patrols. 

One patrol is based in Darfield 

and looks after the Malvern area 

and the Selwyn patrol which 

covers Lincoln, Prebbleton, West 

Melton and other towns within 

our district. 

The community patrols are a 

volunteer organisation, working 

in co-operation with the New 

Zealand police. 

The patrols operate during the 

day and at night to help make 

our communities safe, the patrols 

act as the ‘eyes and ears” for 

the police and do not have any 

jurisdiction beyond that. 

All community patrol members 

undergo training and are 

assessed prior to joining the 

patrols, the patrols themselves 

are regularly provided with areas 

to patrol by the police. 

Members working on these 

patrols work on a roster and just 

help with the patrols whenever 

they can, for some people it may 

be as little as one evening or day 

per fortnight. 

Police rely heavily on community 

patrols throughout New 

Zealand and our local patrols do 

a fantastic job, both patrols are 

currently looking for new members 

or donations to help them 

function.

Magpie moth often 

mistaken for butterfly 

A STUNNING looking day-flying 

moth that is often mistaken for 

a butterfly is the magpie moth, 

Nyctemera annulata. 

This moth has black wings 

with white markings on the 

them. The thorax and abdomen 

are striped black and orange, 

with a wingspan of 35-45mm. 

The magpie moth is a New 

Zealand endemic and is found 

throughout both islands. 

Females lay yellow eggs on 

undersides of native and exotic 

Senecio species, ragwort and 

cineraria. 

Larvae, or woolly bears as they 

are often called, are very hairy, 

black and yellow in colour, and 

about 35mm when fully grown. 

The alkaloids used by plants 

as defence against herbivores are 

sequestered by larvae and utilised 

for their own defence against 

birds. 

The striped orange and black 

markings on both larvae and 

moths is a warning of their toxic 

bitter taste. 

Only the shining cuckoo is 

capable of eating the caterpillars. 

Magpie moth pupae are also 

parasitised by a native wasp 

species.

The Council has started informing landowners of the latest findings on flooding and coastal 

hazard risks, and how it’s proposing to manage them in the new District Plan. 

As part of the current District Plan Review, the Council is required to assess and manage natural 

hazards. It now also has to look at more extreme weather events and the possible effects of 

climate change over the next 100 years, says Tim Harris, Council’s Group Manager Environmental 

and Regulatory Services. 

As is now required, the Council has carried out flood modelling to predict the possible extent 

and depth of flooding outside of coastal areas during a one-in-200-year flood, he says. 

As a result of this modelling, a much larger area of the district has been identified as susceptible 

to flooding. 

“A one-in-200-year flood has a 0.5 percent chance of happening in any given year. However, it’s 

important we let all affected landowners know of an existing natural hazard and how we propose 

to manage it in the new District Plan,” says Mr Harris. 

Rules proposed to address this in the new District Plan are similar to the current plan, but include 

an increased minimum floor height for all new dwellings in affected areas. This proposed height 

would be 300mm above a one-in-200-year flood level, instead of the current one-in-50-year level. 

These rules would come into effect with the new plan, which is expected to be in place in mid-2022. 

From this week, as is legally required, any new Land Information Memorandum (LIM) reports for 

an affected property will contain a note indicating it may be susceptible to flooding, or coastal 

erosion, or inundation under certain circumstances. The note will identify the latest technical 

information held by the Council. 

The Council is expecting to notify the Proposed District Plan for public consultation by the middle 

of this year.

Public information campaign on 

flooding and 

coastal hazards starts 

On the roads this week 

Tennyson Street is closed from 43 Tennyson Street to the Rolleston Police Station 

due to the Rolleston Town Centre infrastructure upgrade. Lowes Road is one way 

both sides of the Tennyson Street intersection, open to traffic travelling away from the 

intersection, due to the intersection upgrade. Traffic management will also be in place 

on Tennyson Street from Bronte Way to just south of the intersection. 

Speed restrictions are in place on Springs Road between Birchs Road and Trents 

Road due to maintenance work on the water system. Stabilising and sealing work is being done on Bealey 

Road, Telegraph Road and Birchs Road and resurfacing is being done on Cullens Road, Clintons Road 

and Old West Coast Road. Traffic management will be in place. 

An intersection upgrade is taking place at the intersection of Highfield Road, Homebush Road and Old 

West Coast Road until 10 April 2020. There will road closures on Homebush Road and Highfield Road 

from Old West Coast Road to Woolshed Road during this work. Traffic management will be in place. 

High Street Leeston will be closed from Messines Street to Leeston and Lake Road and Messines Street 

will be closed from Station Street to High Street from 7am–5pm Saturday 28 March for the Leeston Fête. 

NZTA has advised that Hoskyns Road is left in and left out only at State Highway 1. 

The Weedons Interchange is now fully open and Berketts Road is open for left turn in (southbound) traffic 

only from State Highway 1. 

Tertiary Scholarships 

supporting success 

Scholarships from Selwyn District Council are helping Selwyn young 

people thrive beyond school. 

The Council awarded six tertiary education scholarships to year 12 

and 13 students at Darfield High School, Ellesmere College and 

Lincoln High School in 2019, for a broad range of tertiary education 

and training. This year, scholarships will also be offered to students 

at Rolleston College. 

The scholarships have been expanded to encourage diversity, reach 

and access. 

Students are encouraged to apply if they have achieved academic, 

sporting, cultural, or art successes at school, in clubs, or 

organisations, or overcome barriers or hardships. 

Mekaela Fleener, from Ellesmere College, received a scholarship to 

purchase a violin for her music studies at the University of Canterbury. 

“I think the scholarship is a really neat opportunity, especially for 

those who aren’t good at getting high marks, who might have merit 

in other places.” 

Molly Barker, from Lincoln High School, bought seven health science 

textbooks for her studies at Otago University with her scholarship. 

“I think it’s really great to have a scholarship from outside of your 

school. The external party can view candidates more equally.” 

Mayor Sam Broughton says the scholarships have a wider impact 

than just helping individuals. 

“There are many ambitious young people in Selwyn focussed 

on furthering their education to in turn contribute to their families 

and community.” 

Councillor Jenny Gallagher has been involved with the 

scholarships for over five years and says the scholarships ensure 

Selwyn youth have similar access to opportunities as those in 

bigger metropolitan areas. 

Councillor Shane Epiha was also on the selection panel and thought 

every individual was a worthy candidate. 

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for our rangatahi future leaders – 

some have amazing stories of perseverance overcoming 

challenging situations.”

local businesses and encourage people to think local when looking 

for goods and services, Community Services and Facilities group 

manager Denise Kidd says.

she says. “The directory is a great tool for finding local resources to 

assist your business. As a smaller district we know businesses are 

strengthened by looking at where they can complement each other 

and by working together and the directory’s a good way to connect.”

For Reza Zarnekabi an internet search for a short study stint has turned into a new life. 

Born in northwest Iran, Reza was working in a consulting engineers’ company when he decided he 

wanted to continue his studies further with a PhD. 

He jumped on the internet and found Lincoln University offering exactly what he wanted to study. In 

April 2012, Reiza and his wife Leila made the move to New Zealand, where the native Turkish speakers 

had to spend six months in Auckland to learn English before finally making the move to Christchurch. 

Not planning to be here for long Reza took unpaid leave from his job in Iran. 

Housing was tight in the years following the earthquakes and they had to stay in a hotel, before 

securing a one bedroom flat in the city centre. 

While studying Reza landed work at a consulting engineering company, similar to his job in Iran. Juggling 

study and work proved tricky, so he eventually made the tough decision to terminate his study after two 

years and has been working successfully and happily at the consultant engineering company since. 

He and Leila have gained residency and built their own house in 

Lincoln, where the country air feels much more like home. 

The couple love New Zealand and its acceptance of different 

cultures and diversity. They have travelled most of the South 

Island and think it’s beautiful. They’ve made friends in the 

Iranian community in Christchurch, as well as with tramping, 

gaming and dinner groups. 

They are unsure about what their future holds in New Zealand, 

but for now they are happy; they have found a great community. 

Arthur’s Pass Community Fête returns 

The Arthur’s Pass Community Fête is coming back with an extra autumn fête held this weekend. 

About 700 people attended the first community fête last year, held by the YMCA Arthur’s Pass Outdoor 

Education Centre. 

The organisers were supported by the Selwyn Community Fund, which provides funding to community 

groups, including to hold events and activities that promote Selwyn’s uniqueness, help build the 

community and encourage visitors to the district. 

Arthur's Pass Outdoor Education Centre Manager Gemma Murphy says the funding was an important 

part of being able to get such a good turn-out at the first fête. 

“The funding Selwyn District Council generously contributed enabled us to advertise the event through 

newspapers, posters and social media. As this was the first event of its kind here, we needed to 

promote it far and wide,” Miss Murphy said. 

The fête will include music, a bouncy castle, a raffle, local craft and second-hand clothing stalls, fun 

activities for kids and light refreshments. 

The Arthur’s Pass Outdoor Education Centre run 

programmes focussed on teaching basic outdoor 

skills and environmental education for young people to 

discover what New Zealand has to offer and how they 

can enjoy it safely. 

Money raised will be put towards providing 

experiences and opportunities for free, or at low cost, 

and equipment such as rain jackets and tents for 

children who have participation barriers.

Hororata set to have their race day

HORORATA RACING Club 

president Diane Chesmar truly 

believes that many hands make 

light work ahead of their annual 

race meeting at Riccarton Park 

on Saturday. 

Mrs Chesmar is the first woman 

to be president of the club in 

its 136-year history, having taken 

over the role this season, but said 

it was the hard-working committee 

members she works with 

which makes the day possible. 

“I really just consider myself 

the conductor of an orchestra in 

many ways,” she said. 

Hororata’s annual meeting 

has been at Riccarton since the 

1980s. Mrs Chesmar said it was a 

relationship that worked well. 

West Melton upset 

in tennis final 


KIRWEE-SPRINGSTON 

claimed the Canterbury Country 

tennis title on their home court 

on Saturday. 

They beat competition frontrunners 

West Melton 10 matches 

to six after dominating the doubles 

encounters. 

Kirwee-Springston won seven 

of the eight doubles and mixed 

doubles fixtures to turn around 

a 5-3 deficit after the singles 

matches were completed. 

West Melton had lost just once 

all season, to Kirwee-Springston 

on a countback of games played. 

Saturday’s result was more definitive 

as Kirwee-Springston’s mixed 

doubles power shone through. 

The Kirwee-Springston trio of 

Sebastian On, Bevan Johns and 

Heather Boomer went unbeaten 

throughout their singles, doubles 

and mixed doubles fixtures. 

Sebastian’s third win of the day, 

in the mixed doubles with Kerry 

Noble secured the title.

were not able to hold-off the

Speedway mate to be honoured at Ruapuna

TWO SELWYN speedway 

drivers will honour a mate this 

weekend at Ruapuna Speedway. 

The recent death of Auckland 

Speedway identity Bryce 

Townsend will be marked with a 

special tribute on Saturday night 

with Lincoln’s Jeremy Webb and 

Rolleston’s Kyle Glover both 

eager to race in his memory. 

Glover is one of the South 

Island’s top TQ 

midget racers 

and like many 

he was shocked 

by Townsend’s 

passing. 

“Bryce had 

Kyle Glover 

been there, and 

done that in the 

speedway world 

but he was never short of time to 

assist any racer with a word of 

encouragement and advice,” he 

said. 

“I travelled to the US with 

him on a couple of his tours and 

everyone knew him. 

“In many ways he was the face 

of New Zealand Speedway over 

there.” 

Webb said Townsend will 

never be far from his thoughts. 

“Bryce was instrumental 

in getting me the drive for

the Clausen-Marshall team at 

this year’s Chilli Bowl. 

“To be part of the world’s biggest 

midget car show, was to me,

me. My crew and I will be forever 

grateful. 

“I’ve known him most of my 

life and I looked up to him as a 

person, mentor and racer.”

friends and fellow Aucklanders 

Jayden Worthington and Max 

Guilford are making the trip 

south to contest the Midget Mayhem 

event. 

Guilford, just a second year 

midget car racer was being mentored 

by Townsend, and earlier 

this season capped off his rapid 

progress by being selected to race 

for the New Zealand Midget car 

test team. 

Townsend was a regular competitor 

at Ruapuna throughout 

his career, and once his racing 

days were over he continued to 

support the track and many of its 

competitors. 

Ruapuna club president Allan 

Daly said that it was important 

that Bryce’s contribution to the 

sport were recognised. 

“He raced here as often as 

he could, and then went on to 

encouraging drivers to travel 

south to support our track. He 

was also a highly recognised 

crew chief and freely passed on 

help.” 

The meeting will also feature 

the annual Quake City 

Sprintcar Stampede and over 

a dozen drivers have entered, 

including Nelson’s Alicia 

McLauchlan and Blenheim racer 

Paddy North. 

It will also be the first 

appearance for the season at 

Ruapuna of Hornby’s Matthew 

Leversedge, who has been 

campaigning at Auckland’s 

Western Springs. 

Leversedge’s clash with current 

South Island champion Jamie 

Duff is eagerly anticipated.

What is COVID-19? 

COVID-19 is a new illness that can affect your lungs and airways. It’s caused by a type 

of coronavirus. There are simple steps you can take to protect you and your family/whānau. 

How is it spread? 

COVID-19, like the flu, can be spread from person to person. When a person who 

has COVID-19 coughs, sneezes or talks, they may spread droplets containing the virus 

a short distance, which quickly settle on surrounding surfaces. 

You may get infected by the virus if you touch those surfaces or objects and then 

touch your mouth, nose or eyes. 

That’s why it’s really important to use good hygiene, regularly wash and thoroughly 

dry your hands, and use good cough etiquette. 

What can I do to stop COVID-19 spreading? 

•Cough or sneeze into your elbow or by covering your mouth and nose with tissues. 

•Put used tissues in the bin or a bag immediately. 

•Wash your hands with soap and water often (for at least 20 seconds). 

•Try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell. 

•Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean. 

•Avoid personal contact, such as kissing, sharing cups or food with sick people. 

•Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects, such as doorknobs. 

•Stay home if you feel unwell and call Healthline on 0800 358 5453.

Plant now for autumn vegetables

AFTER THE dry, hot summer 

most of us have had, it feels 

a little strange writing about 

autumn and winter vege just yet. 

But as many a gardener knows, 

preparation is the key to the 

success of any vege patch. So, if 

you want to enjoy plenty of vege 

from your garden in the cooler 

months, you really need to get 

started now. 

First start by clearing out 

any old plants that have passed 

their time. I’ll be pulling out old 

tomato stalks, dried up courgette 

plants and many herbs that have 

gone to seed. 

Give your soil a good turning 

over and remove any clumpy 

roots and debris. Try to break 

down the larger lumps in the soil 

that your plants may struggle to 

grow roots through. Top up with 

compost, sheep pallets, top soil 

and a give a good feed of general 

fertiliser. 

For plants, I’m going to focus 

on my greens as they will go well 

in autumn and right now I feel 

like greens will help balance out 

my ‘indulgent’ summer. These 

include cauliflower, silverbeet, 

cabbage and broccoli. 

If you want a variation on plain 

broccoli, try broccoflower. It has 

a milder and slightly sweeter 

taste to cauliflower – and looks 

like a lime green cauliflower. Or 

Italian (Romanesco) broccoli, 

with its light green clusters of 

heads that resemble sea coral. 

The unusual tip of each spear 

is conical rather than round, 

looking like the ‘royal’ version. 

It tastes more like true broccoli, 

but at its very best! 

Also try the newest (and 

trendiest) member of the broccoli 

family, broccolini (tasty 

stems); a hybrid between broccoli 

and Chinese broccoli. It’s 

slightly sweeter than normal 

broccoli. You can compare its

taste to asparagus, and it’s ideal 

for stir-fries. 

And now to plant your broccoli. 

Firstly, they like a freedraining 

and sunny spot, and to 

be planted in a new place each 

year. This crop rotation will 

ensure premium growth and 

quality. When you’ve found your 

perfect place to plant, dig holes 

roughly twice the size of the 

seedling, around 35-50cm apart. 

Place inside and firmly press the 

soil down with your hands. 

These brassicas will all take 

a while to mature, so consider 

popping in faster growing plants 

between each seedling – this is 

called companion planting. Pak 

choy, beetroot, radish, spring 

onions and spinach are all fast 

growing veges you can poke in 

between your larger brassicas, 

and harvest before the brassicas 

are ready. 

Lastly, apply mulch. This will 

help keep the weeds down and 

retain moisture. Pea straw and 

bark mulch are popular choices, 

but pine needles, wet newspaper 

strips and even wool packing 

from your ‘My Food Bag’ will do 

the trick. 

When it comes to harvesting 

your broccoli heads, cut them off 

diagonally. This will encourage 

new mini-heads to grow, giving 

you a long cropping season. And, 

if you suddenly find all your 

broccoli is ready at once and you 

don’t quite have the stomach 

for it, remember it freezes really 

well. 

Simply place in a snap lock 

bag, and it will keep nicely for a 

few months.

Meat exports hit record high, 

but coronavirus looms 

Export prices for meat achieved their 

highest-ever level in the December 2019 

quarter, according to Stats NZ. 

“Meat export prices have risen for three 

quarters in a row, on the back of strong 

demand towards the end of last year,” says 

Stats NZ business prices manager Bryan 

Downes said. 

Meat volumes rose 3.2%, and values rose 

12% in the December 2019 quarter. 

“Over the year, meat prices also rose, 

with both beef and lamb prices up,” says 

Downes. 

The impact of coronavirus on New 

Zealand’s export prices is yet to be 

announced by Stats NZ. 

“Exports of meat and logs increased 

towards the end of 2019, before the 

outbreak of coronavirus in China,” says 

Downes. China is New Zealand’s biggest 

trading partner. 

“Any impact of the coronavirus on 

prices for our goods and services, mainly 

because of disruptions to global trade, 

could be reflected in the March 2020 

quarter,” says Downes. 

Wood export prices also rose in the 

December 2019 quarter, up 8.2%, partly 

recovering from falls in the previous two 

quarters.

Partly offsetting the rise in meat and 

wood export prices was a 2.4% fall in 

dairy prices. 

While volumes were up 14%, the value 

of dairy exports rose by only 11%. 

The fall in dairy prices was driven by 

an 11% fall in butter prices in the latest 

quarter. 

However, butter prices remain at 

historically high levels following strong 

price increases a few years ago. Overall, 

export prices rose 3.0% in the December 

2019 quarter. 

Wood export prices also rose in the 

December 2019 quarter, up 8.2%, partly

Roasted snapper makes miso happy

Forget the line-up of pots 

and pans and try this 

simple one-dish roasted 

miso butter snapper with 

broccolini 

Miso butter snapper with 

broccolini 

Serves 2 

Ingredients 

1 Tbsp white miso paste 

25g softened unsalted butter 

2 180g skinless snapper fillets 

1 tsp sesame oil 

2 small red chillies, thinly sliced, 

plus extra thinly sliced to serve 

1 Tbsp soy sauce 

1 Tbsp peanut oil 

2 bunches broccolini, halved 

lengthways 

150g enoki mushrooms, stalks 

trimmed – if you can’t find them, 

just leave them out 

1 tsp sesame seeds 

Juice of ½ lime 

Thinly sliced spring onion, to 

garnish 

Directions 

Preheat the oven to 200 deg C. 

Line a baking dish with baking 

paper. 

Combine miso and butter, then 

spread over snapper. Combine 

sesame oil, chilli, soy sauce and 

peanut oil in a bowl. 

Add broccolini, mushrooms 

and sesame seeds, toss to combine, 

then spread over the base of the 

prepared baking dish. Top with 

snapper. 

Roast for 18-20min until 

snapper is just cooked and the 

broccolini is tender. 

Creamy rice pudding with 

plum compote 

Serves 4 

Ingredients 

1 cup (uncooked) white medium 

grain rice, cooked to packet 

instructions 

2 Tbsp cornflour 

250ml milk 

300ml thickened cream 

1 egg, beaten 

1 tsp vanilla extract 

Plum compote 

400g red-flesh plums 

1 cinnamon stick 

¼ cup caster sugar 

¼ cup (60ml) port 

Directions 

For compote, place all 

ingredients in a pan with ¼ cup 

water, stirring to combine. Bring 

to the boil over medium-high

heat, then reduce heat to low 

and simmer for 8-10min until 

the plums are soft and liquid is 

syrupy. Cool slightly, or chill for 

up to five days if desired. 

Combine cooked rice and 

remaining ingredients in a pan 

over medium-low heat. Cook for 

5min, stirring, until thick and 

creamy. 

Serve pudding topped with 

compote.

Sedan boosts Toyota Corolla load space 

TOYOTA NEW Zealand is 

pulling no punches marketing its 

Corolla range. 

Not only are there a handful of 

new variants within the range - 

bearing in mind the latest generation 

series landed here just over 

two years ago - but a fresh pricing 

structure makes for value-packed 

buying across sedan, hatchback 

and wagon options. 

I recently evaluated the new 

wagon and remarked on its 

value at just below $30k; another 

newcomer is the SX sedan and it 

is the subject of this evaluation. It 

is also value at $32,990, and to be 

honest if I was a buyer I couldn’t 

choose between the two, I particularly 

like wagons and sedans, 

and both have special appeal, 

although the sedan with its 2-litre 

engine against 1.8-litre for the 

wagon may just tip the balance. 

And SX grade is certainly for 

me, it translates to cloth interior 

trim, but it also has plenty of other 

goodies to keep me happy in the 

cabin such as sat nav, paddle shifters, 

and radar cruise control. The 

latter is part of the Toyota Sense 

suite of safety kit that is fitted 

throughout the Corolla range and 

it is state-of-the-art, easily earning 

a five-star Australasian New Car 

Assessment Program rating. 

A totally new platform was developed 

for the latest generation 

Corolla, and it formed the basis 

for the extensive array of body 

styles that all sit on a complex 

fully independent suspension system. 

This draws me to the range, 

I like the idea of all four corners 

working in their own way and 

with the spring and damper rates 

set to a medium compromise the 

Corolla sedan feels sporty and 

well attached to the road. 

In saying that, the SX variant 

rides on 205/55 x 16in Dunlop 

rubber, there’s nothing wrong 

with the handling and the tyres 

are very quiet, but if I was a 

buyer I think I’d opt for an 18in 

wheel which is standard on other 

Corolla models, they would offer 

a lot more presence. 

There are no surprises under 

the bonnet, well there are in some 

ways, the new sedan is available 

as a hybrid as well. 

However, the SX is solely reliant 

on petrol power, its 2-litre engine 

is now well-established into the 

Corolla hatch and sedan, and it 

is a no-nonsense unit with power 

figures of 125kW and 200Nm, the 

outputs realised at 6600rpm and 

4100rpm respectively. 

While the latter would appear 

to make the engine peaky, that’s 

not the case, the engine is happy 

to work low down, and with its

pairing to a continuously variable 

transmission the engine finds its 

happy place through the midrange. 

Toyota have worked hard 

with the CVT system, it now works 

almost like a traditional torque 

converter automatic with physical 

gears, it is a 10-step system and can 

be locked into any pre-set step by 

sequentially using the main gearshift 

lever or paddles. 

As an aside, there’s also a sport 

mode which heightens engine 

urgency and adjusts the way the 

ratio works so that acceleration 

can be ushered in just that little 

bit quicker. Toyota claims a 9.2sec 

standstill to 100km/h time, while 

by my stopwatch a 5.4sec 80km/h 

to 120km/h overtaking time can 

be achieved. 

These figures relate to brisk 

motoring, the beauty of a 2-litre 

engine is that it’s not working 

hard, the sedan weighs in at 

around 1300kg, which means a 

healthy power-to-weight ratio. 

That also means the engine isn’t 

working hard for the majority 

of the time and that translates 

to respectable fuel usage figures. 

Toyota also claims a six-litre per 

100km combined cycle average. 

That correlates well with the fuel 

usage display within the car, it 

was constantly listing around 

7.1l/100km with 5l/100km showing 

instantaneously at 100km/h. 

What makes the fuel usage figures 

so appealing is that I evaluated 

the Corolla sedan on one of 

the hottest days of Christchurch’s 

summer. Normally, I never use air 

conditioning, but with temperatures 

hovering around 35 deg C I 

had the air on most of the time. 

Combining good performance 

and economy isn’t achieved easily, 

but given the Corolla’s long 

history that’s something Toyota 

has been able to work on over the 

years, it is wonderfully efficient, 

yet all models feel feisty and 

there’s just that element of sporty 

appeal that will lure those who 

like to push along a bit when the

It’s also nice to know that when 

the long straights run out there 

is a chassis underneath that is 

capable of dealing with the twists 

and turns without affecting the 

level of comfort we have come to 

expect from one of the automotive 

world’s most successful 

nameplates. 

For the record, Toyota lists the 

sedan’s boot space with a load capacity 

of 470-litres, that compares 

to 294-litres for the hatch and 

390-litres for the wagon. Interesting 

figures which will certainly 

get those who are looking for 

load space scratching their heads. 

Toyota is pushing hard the 

hybrid message, however, there’s 

still a lot of life left in petrol only 

engines only. The Corolla in all 

forms is a fuel miser and I’d find 

it a difficult choice to choose 

between either. 

However, the SX sedan 

certainly captures my attention 

for its honesty and all round 

appeal.

Looking confident may be all you need to be the last 

bidder standing when the hammer goes down. 

Does your blood pressure go sky-high at 

the sight of an auction room? Chances are 

some of your fellow bidders are doing all 

in their power to psych you out and win 

the bidding. 

Securing a property isn’t just about 

having the most money. Sometimes the 

winning bidder is the one with the most 

confidence. 

They use psychology to convince 

opposing bidders to give up, hoping to 

make everyone else think they’ve got more 

to spend than anyone else in the room. 

Too often buyers have preconceived 

ideas about how the auction will unfold 

and have their confidence knocked when it 

doesn’t go their way. 

Two can play at that game. You just need 

to get your strategy right. 

Looking confident may be all you need 

to be the last bidder standing when the 

hammer goes down. 

To be that person you need to do some 

preparation. Make sure you go to a few 

auctions first to get used to them. 

Come bidding day, park yourself on 

the side at the front so that you can 

see everyone in the room and, more 

importantly, they can see you whether

in the Selwyn District

opening in Selwyn 

The district’s showhome scene is changing. Still 

concentrated around Lincoln or Rolleston, there are 

showhome villages in new residential housing estates 

and a few standalone showhomes. 

Some showhomes double as a base for a building 

company. Most showcase their workmanship and 

type of homes they specialise in. All offer ideas on 

building products and trends. 

When viewing a showhome, allocate time. It will 

take more than one afternoon to view all in the 

district. You might make a quick visit to each, noting 

those to revisit for a longer perusal. 

All but one showhome in Lincoln, is situated in the 

newer part of Te Whāriki’s Southfield Drive. Here 

seven building companies offer a total of eight homes 

to view, of varying size, design and level of fittings 

and features. Three more showhomes can be found 

in Lincoln’s Flemington, with two due to close soon. 

If looking to build at the higher end of the market, 

the Te Whāriki showhomes of Faye Homes and 

Hallmark Homes, along with Homes by Maxim in 

Flemington and R&B Builders’ showhome in The 

Borough, Rolleston should top your list. Many other 

showhomes also offer innovative ideas for how style 

can be added to a new home. 

It is changing of the guard for showhomes in 

Rolleston. Faringdon’s East Maddisons Road village 

is slowly winding down with a number now closed. 

The remaining showhomes are worth a view. 

New showhomes are under construction or 

have opened in The Borough, Faringdon’s latest 

development, with more to open in the next month 

or so. A total of 14 showhomes are to be constructed 

there. A smaller showhome village is being 

established at Acland Park.

the entrance to Branthwaite on the Lincoln Rolleston

Circle Homes at 12 Lignite Drive in Stonebrook,

While most showhomes are open 12noon-4pm 

from Wednesday to Sunday, the opening hours for 

others are different. Details can usually be found 

on a company’s website. Most are happy to open by 

appointment. 

To make the most of your showhome viewing, 

keep an open mind when visiting each home. On 

entering, ask the consultant for its details: the size of 

the home (this influences how spacious each room 

will look), what is standard within the home and 

additional features which will cost more, and the 

price to build that particular home. Take notes or 

photos of fittings and features you like, being realistic 

about your wish list and bearing in mind your 

budget as this will influence what can ultimately be 

incorporated into your new home.
