Youth Speaks
Wigan Rotary Club hosted the
local heats of the schools-based
Youth Speaks competition at
St John Rigby College recently.
Four Intermediate and four
Senior teams competed fiercely
for a chance to progress in
the competition. The winning
team in the Senior Section
was St Peter’s Catholic High
School who were presented
with the Peter Hoddinott Shield
and the winning team in the
Intermediate Section was
Shevington High School, who
were the first recipients of the Terry Hogan Shield.
The two teams competed at the district finals at
Forest Hills Leisure Centre in Frodsham. Shevington
presented an interesting description of a teaching
method from Sweden entitled Life is What You
Make It’, whilst St Peters made
the audience think long and
hard with their presentation
entitled ‘Does Freedom of
Expression Really Exist?.
The standard of speaking from
all the teams involved was
outstanding, but St. Peter’s
High School swept the board
in the senior section, winning
Best Chair, Best Speaker and
Best Vote of Thanks, and won
the Senior Section Trophy. They
now proceed to the Grand Final
of Youth Speaks which will be
held on Saturday 9th May 2020 in Preston.
