BilingualismFrench-English culturalbilingualism from an early ageFamilies asked L’école des Petits, in Fulham, how theyachieve teaching in two languages in their school:“Founded in 1977, our bilingual schools teachthe French curriculum integrated with the bestparts of the British curriculum. This structure isapproved by the French Department forEducation and subject to DfE Ofstedinspections (consistently awarded“Outstanding” on both sites).Our school community is very diverse withpupils coming from a vast array of linguisticbackgrounds. Early bilingualism and a strongawareness and open-mindedness towardsworld culture turn our pupils into motivated,curious and respectful citizens.Our aim is for them all to reach perfect oralfluency in both French and English by the ageof 6. They can then acquire solid reading andwriting skills with us until they turn 11 andmove on.Now in its sixth year, Les Petits Choux runsFrench lessons for children at the AspireCentre, Merton Road, SW18 4SS. Whether your“petit chou” is a complete beginner or a fluentbilingual, there will be a class to suit them.For each pupil, focus will be put on the“weakest” language to strengthen it inorder to achieve a balanced level ofproficiency. Classes are taught bynative speakers of bothlanguages, assisted by nativespeaking assistants. Correctuse of the language isencouraged throughout theday, even at informal times.Mastering both languages isachieved through academic teachingas well as a combination of arts, music andsports classes which are an integral part of thecurriculum. Pupils are constantly exposed toboth languages as class swaps and rotatingscience, ICT and sports workshops are heldintra- or inter-level.We are rightfullyknown as the mostBritish of theFrench schools!learners playing games, reading stories, doingarts and crafts, and singing songs, and muchmore, all in French. On Wednesdays there aretwo bilingual classes from 4–5pm and abeginners’ class from 4–4.45pm.After-school clubs ranging from yoga tofootball, as well as science, art and drama alsoexpose pupils to both languages.Beyond our education ethos governed bythe strict discipline required for bilingualteaching (i.e: each native speaker will alwaysand only speak their own languagewhichever of the two they may beaddressed in by their pupils), ourschools offer a perfect combination ofthe French and British Educationsystems. Uniforms and schoolbags areour most visible British touch, whilehouses and bilingual assemblies are partof the structure.
