BabiesDuring the first three years oflife, a baby’s brain isdeveloping rapidly which iswhy this period contains somany critical milestones fortheir speech development.Interestingly, much of yourbaby's speech developmentdepends on your "baby talk"skills as well as those ofyour baby!When should babiesstart talking? By Andrew CampbellThe first “baby talk” is non-verbal andhappens soon after birthBabies grimace, cry, and squirm to express arange of emotions and physical needs, fromfear to hunger to frustration. It is important tolisten to your baby’s different cries, work outwhat they mean and respond accordingly.At the age of 3 months, you’ll notice your babylistening to your voice, watching your face asyou talk, and turning towards other voices,sounds and music.Before babies start talking, they are gatheringinformation. That information eventuallybecomes the foundation of the first baby talk.And the best way for parents to help theirbabies make it to those first words – and thrivewith language development in the monthsafter – is to talk to them.At around 6 months of age, you’ll hear yourbaby begin to babble and coo, as they playaround with different sounds. This “baby talk” isa happy, gentle, repetitive, sing-songvocalisation sounds similar the world over,despite the language of a baby’s parents.After 9 months of age, babies can say andunderstand a few basic words like "no" and"bye-bye." They also may begin to use a widerrange of consonant sounds and tones as theytry out sounds and find their own voice. Babiesmay also be able to point to people, objects,and body parts you name for them. Theyrepeat words or sounds they hear you say, likethe last word in a sentence, but they oftenleave off endings or beginnings of words. Forexample, they may say "daw" for "dog" or "noonoo's"for "noodles."Most babies say their first words sometimearound their first birthdayNow, importantly, they know what they aresaying. They should also respond to -- or atleast understand, if not obey - short, one-steprequests like: "Please put that down.”Over the next six months, your baby will startto use language in a more recognisable wayand you may start to hear them talking. Youmight find that initially only you and a few ofyour baby’s favourite people can make outwhat they’re saying though! By the age of 2years, babies can string together short phrasesof two to four words, such as "Mummy byebye"or "me milk." They're learning that wordsmean more than objects like "cup" - they alsomean abstract ideas like "mine."Over the course of the next year, your baby’svocabulary expands rapidly, and "make-believe"play spurs an understanding of symbolic andabstract language like "now," feelings like "sad,"and spatial concepts like "in."Ideas to encourage talkingThe more words children hear, the morethey learn.Here are some fun things to do togetherto encourage your baby’s speech andlanguage development:Chat to your baby about the thingsyou’re doing, even if you think they’reboring – for example, ‘Daddy’s vacuumingthe carpet to get rid of the dust that makesyou sneeze.’Repeat your baby’s attempts at words toencourage a two-way conversation. Forexample, if she says “mama” you could say“mama” back to her. Build on your toddler’swords. For example, when baby says:“train,” you say: “Yes, it’s a big red train.”Show interest in your baby’s babblingand talking by smiling and looking him inthe eye.Respond to and talk about your baby’sinterests. For example, if your baby startsplaying with a toy train, you could say“Toot, toot.”Read, tell stories, share songs andnursery rhymes with your baby.Praise your baby’s efforts to talk. Forexample, if your baby points to a dog andnames it, you could say: “Well done forpointing out the dog, Georgie!”Infants all develop at a different pace, butif you're worried about your child's speechor language development, talk to your GPor health visitor.
