Bust of a Female Saint
Fresco, 22 x 33 cm
First half of the VIII century
A very rare staccato fresco portraying the bust of a saint
surrounded by a clypeus with an ochre and black background.
She is wearing a rich golden Dalmatian embellished with
maniakion. The representation corresponds to the typical
female aristocratic physiognomy deriving from the prototypes
of Byzantine ancestry of the seventh century. It comes from a
pictorial workshop cycle around Rome in the early Middle Ages.
Provenance
Rome, private collection
Milanese
An Italian Renaissance Hand and a Half Sword
Overall length 114.3 cm / Blade length 89.5 cm
circa 1490-1500
Surviving early Renaissance swords of a quality comparable
to ours are few in number and invariably associated with persons
of great wealth and rank. Among the most celebrated
of them is a splendid sword in the Rüstkammer, Staatliche
Kunstsammlung Dresden (no. hm.a36), identified in early inventories
of the Saxon Electoral Armoury as that of Graf Leonhard
von Görz (1440–1500).
Dr John Hayward, in his assessment of our sword, observed
that although having affinities with that of Leonhard von
Görz at Dresden, it excels it in richness and is the equal of the
wedding sword of the future Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian
I. It is tantalising, given its opulence, to speculate upon
the identity of its original and obviously wealthy owner.
Michele Lorenzoni
(Florence, 1684 – 1737)
An Italian Breech-Loading Repeating Flintlock Gun
Overall length: 150.5 cm / Barrel length: 83 cm
circa 1700
Marked with the ownership monograms of Ferdinando III
de’Medici, Grand Prince of Tuscany (1663–1713)
Little is known of the life of Michele Lorenzoni, which is
strange in the face of his significant accomplishments in the
development of repeating firearms, the extraordinarily high
standard to which they were finished and the distinction of his
court patronage. He worked in Florence from the early 1680s
until late in the 1730s and counted the Princes Medici, among
others, as his patrons.
Dirck van Baburen
(Utrecht 1592/93 – 1624)
The Philosopher
Oil on canvas, 95.5 x 105 cm
circa 1618 – 1619
Provenance
Rome, Possibly Pietro Cussida Collection
Rome, Possibly by inheritance to Gianfrancesco Cussida, 1622.
Possibly to Laura Cussida, Rome, described in 1624, in a list of
paintings she was to inherit from her deceased father, Gianfrancesco
Cussida, as ‘un quadro con ritratto di un filosofo con cornice indorata’.
Upon Laura Cussida’s marriage, in 1641, to Mario Massimo, the
picture possibly passed to her guardian, Nicolò Gavotti, Rome, until
his death in 1674.
Possibly by inheritance to Carlo Gavotti Collection, Rome, 1674-
1702.
Possibly passed down to the heirs of Carlo Gavotti thereafter, said
to have descended from a noble Tuscan family, at least from the
early nineteenth century.
Pandolfini Florence, 15 October 2013, lot 48, as by a seventeenthcentury
Dutch follower of Caravaggio.
Gian Domenico Cerrini
(Perugia 1609 - Rome 1681)
Penitent Saint Jerome
Oil on canvas, 97 x 83 cm
1661
The octagonal format reveals a provenance from a Florentine
base of collecting. Cerrini came to Florence after being called
by the Medici for whom he produced many works. The theme
of Saint Jerome was dear to the painter and two painting with
this subject were in the Medici collections. The dating of 1661
corresponds to the painter’s second sojourn in Florence.
Giovan Battista Foggini
(Florence 1652 – 1725)
Lot, the angels, and his daughters fleeing Sodoma
Terracotta, 40 x 93.5 cm
1680-1690
Perhaps these terracotta were originally above the doors of
a chapel. A pendant representing The Sacrifice of Noah is
kept at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, and another
terracotta depicting The Drunkeness of Noah was sold
decades ago in New York. The style shows influences of
the artist’s Roman apprenticeship with Ciro Ferri and Ercole
Ferrata.
Gaspard Dughet
(Rome 1615 – 1675)
Landscape with Saint John the Baptist
Oil on canvas, 160 x 233 cm
XVII century
Inscribed lower left with 191, corresponding with the 1701
inventory.
This painting was part of a group of 24 large canvases
commissioned by the Marquis of Castel Rodrigo, Spanish
Ambassador to Rome from 1632 to 1641 during the reign of Philip
IV of Spain, to decorate the Buen Retiro Palace. The ambassador
commissioned the most famous landscape painters working in
Rome during the period, firstly Poussin and Lorrain, as well as
Lemaire, Swanevelt Jan Both and Dughet, Poussin’s brother in
law, who executed two paintings: ‘Landscape with Saint John
the Baptist’ and a ‘Landscape with a hermit’, now in the Prado.
Nine of the twenty-four paintings are in the same museum.
Between 1639 and 1641, the Marquis of Castel Rodrigo spent
5900 ducats, as reported by il Baldinucci. The painter of the
figures within Dughet’s two landscapes is yet to be identified.
