Within these options you’ll find the unusual boat

and trailer racing competitions. These races

feature trucks with attached boat trailers. The

drivers pull the boat and trailers around the

racetrack at top speeds, and like most racing

venues, wrecks are an almost certainty.

Safford House Museum was once the home of Anson P. K. Safford.

Safford’s time was in a more peaceful and less demanding era and

is depicted throughout the home and shown in its décor and architecture.

The home is located in the historic district of the city and was

restored in 1994.

Caladesi Island State Park

The Caladesi Island State Park offers a wealth of outdoor activities.

From swimming to hiking you are sure to fill your camping days with

Clearwater Marine Aquarium

Winter Zone at Clearwater Marine Aquarium has daily dolphin shows

and Turtle Cove is designed for permanent turtles as well as those

in rehab. Visitors can also participate in the Adopt a Turtle Program.

The underwater viewing tunnel gives the illusion of being inside a

shipwreck while viewing the marine life as it passes by the windows.

This tunnel allows you and your children an up close and personal

view into the daily life of these animals.

The Dali Museum

Surrealist artist Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dali I Dommenech considers

the Dali Museum the world’s largest collection of works. Among his

works on display are Self Portrait, Cadaques, and Portrait of my Sister,

Girl’s Back and Oeufs sur Le Plat sans Le Plat. Museum hours are

Monday through Wednesday 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Thursdays 10 a.m.

to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Sundays

from noon until 5:30 p.m.

The Pier Aquarium

The Fresh Fish Theater at the Pier Aquarium begins with three cylinder

tanks in its lobby. These tanks feature several different species

of marine animals. On the second floor are 14 tanks in which

to learn first hand how these ocean inhabitants live. Within this area

are recordings from the sea and educational videos depicting each

of the beautiful and fascinating marine animals. Aquarium hours are

10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon until 6 p.m. on

Sundays.

Sunken Gardens

Considered one of Florida’s oldest living museums, Sunken Garden

is ideal for nature lovers. In this garden are over 50,000 tropical flowers

and plants. The plant life is imported from all over the world providing

• Christopher B. Coghlan of the Florida Marlins was born in Palm Harbor, Florida. However, he attended East Lake

High School located in Tarpon Springs.

• Coghlan’s first run in Major League Baseball draft was with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

• In August of 2009, Coghlan had 41 hits, the most hits for a rookie player since 1998 when Todd Helton had

45 hits of his own.

• The real name of Dieselboy is Damian Higgins. He plays the drums, produces, plays the bass and is the founder

of the music label, Human Imprint.

• Dieselboy was voted in the UK’s Drum and Bass Arena’s Top 10 DJs. He was the first American to make it onto

this list.

• Dieselboy’s music is featured on several video games, on ESPN and on MTV.

• In 1972 Dieselboy was born in Tarpon Springs but later moved to Colorado City.

• Wayne Fontes was the head coach for the Detroit Lions from 1988 and 1996, his teams recorded 62 wins.

• The Detroit Lions won the 1991 championship game while Fontes was the head coach.

• Another career highlight for Fontes was the Lions win against the Redskins at Super Bowl XXVI.

• Elbert Joseph Bertie Higgins was born December 8, 1944 in Tarpon Springs. His album Just Another Day in

Paradise featured the top 10 hit Key Largo.

Florida Hiking Trails

Withloacoochee State Forest

The Withloacoochee State Forest spans 113,431 acres.

Within this forest, you find numerous tracts, trails, and

loops. Each hiking option ranges in mileage from 3 miles

to up to six miles. You have the opportunity to experience

the natural beauty of the forest. Visit the Visitor Center to

acquire maps for the hiking areas and rules that apply.

Ocala National Forest

The Florida National Scenic Trail located at the Ocala National

Forest. The hiking trail spans 75 miles total. The trail

is accessible for bikes and horses. Elevation is minimal.

From the trail you view ponds, lakes, and wildlife. According

to the Florida Trail Association, this hiking trail is the

crown jewel of the statewide scenic trail system.

Kissimmee River National Scenic Trail

The Kissimmee River National Scenic Trail spans nine

miles. Throughout this hiking trail you view the Kissimmee

River and a vast amount of wildlife. You pass oak hammocks

and pine flatlands while venturing through the trail.

The trail is remote and allows for a peaceful and serene

hike.

Alexander Springs Campground

The Alexander Springs Campground provides a challenging

hiking trail in addition to campsites. You have the option

to reserve one of the 67 sites located throughout the park

for $15 per night. The Florida Trail runs 84 miles. You see

beautiful greenery and locale wildlife through the trail. The

temperature in this area is typically 72 degrees throughout

the year.

Sugarloaf Mountain Summit

20449 Sugarloaf Mountain Road, Clermont

The Sugarloaf Mountain trail spans up to 39 miles and is

segmented into multiple trails. The full length of the trail is

included into the annual bike challenge. This area is great

for hiking or riding your bike. You have access to the scenic

overlook through the trail.
