We’re in largely uncharted territory with the pandemic that’s upon us, and it’s our responsibility to know all we can and to do all we can in our capacity as chief engineers to prevent the spread of this disease. That’s why we’ve dedicated this month’s cover story to information about COVID-19 and how chief engineers should be fine-tuning their response to this crisis. We have tried to be as comprehensive and current in our discussion of this virus as possible, but we encourage you to stay up to date on any information from relevant health agencies that may impact the facilities you maintain. We encourage you to have a look at OSHA’s “Guidance on Preparing Workplaces for COVID-19” (currently available on the homepage at OSHA.gov) and to further develop whatever prevention and response plan you have thus far enacted. As all of this unfolds, and we remain diligent as we work to protect the people and environments in the buildings we maintain, let’s also be mindful that the better we all do our jobs — from observing best practices in our facilities to washing our hands and exercising social distancing — we can minimize the number of those infected, and keep the doctors and nurses on the front lines of this pandemic from being overwhelmed, which they very well may be by the time you read this. Let’s keep them in mind as they mind their patients and risk their own health for that of their communities, and resolve to do our best in the face of this great uncertainty.
