Agriculture is the Science or practice of farming, including cultivation of the soil
for the growing of crops and the rearing of animals to provide food, wool, and
other products. Agricultural Education is the teaching of Agriculture, natural
resources and land use management and is undertaken to prepare students
for employment in Agricultural sector.
The adoption of Agricultural Science in school curriculum helps in social and
economical development of our nation. Agricultural Education represents a
food, fiber and natural resource system that employs people and provides for
the well-being of our state and nation.
The learning of Agricultural Science at Tavua College has given students an
opportunity to develop and appreciate for an interest in field of Agriculture
and to establish a basic foundation for students who wish to study Agriculture
at Tertiary levels. Considering the need for exposure, department displays
were organized during the TEST week to enhance learning and promotion of
Agriculture as a subject. The practical sessions urge students to augment their own
capabilities by emphasizing on activity based farming.
The department comprises of 3 teachers who have worked hard throughout the year
and were able to successfully deliver the prescribed curriculum at various levels and
prepare students for external examinations. Evidence of learning was most apparent
when teachers set high expectations for their students and when the students were
stimulated and challenged to engage with the learning process. This was evident
where 7 students scored more than 90% in the year 13 Agricultural Science paper to
excel 100% pass for Years 13, 89% pass for Year 12 and 56% pass for Year 10.
At this juncture, I thank my department teachers for their commitment, and cooperation
towards teaching of Agricultural Science.
Finally, I would like to thank the Principal, Vice Principal, Assistant Principal, staff,
students for their continuous support during the year.
