Random Thoughts
With a tip of the cap to our old friend
Thomas Sowell, we offer the following
random thoughts on the passing [socially
distanced] scene:
• When we open up our state and our
county, the coronavirus will spread more
easily. People will get sick, some will die.
If we stay locked down indefinitely, same
result.
• The notion that we must choose either
physical or economic health – that we can
only have one or the other – is false. We
need to protect our physical health. We
need to protect our economic health. Both
of these statements are true at the same
time. To say nothing of our mental and
emotional health.
• Just because government says that a
business can open its doors does not mean
that customers will flock back in. The business
will have to earn each customer’s trust
by making them feel safe and comfortable.
If the business fails to do this, they may as
well stay locked down.
• Our money is on local businesses being
way better at this than national chains.
• Local businesses, where owners have
to look you in the eye and say “trust me,”
will flourish over the next decade. It will be
a resurgence, a beautiful blooming.
• Unfortunately, we will have to endure a
lot of pain before that happens.
• People keep saying that this coronavirus
is unprecedented. No, it isn’t. There
have been plagues, pestilence and pandemics
for as long as there have been humans.
Only now we have Twitter.
• Three hundred years ago, Jonathan
Swift wrote: “Falsehood flies, and the
Truth comes limping after it.” For that
quote alone, Swift should be credited as a
co-founder of social media.
• We are announcing our Teacher of the
Year winner in this issue. Truth is, this year
we could have picked hundreds of deserving
teachers. Most will have to settle for
this: Thank You!
• We have gotten used to an awful lot
of weird stuff during the lockdown, but
seeing your neighbor wearing a mask in
the grocery store will never feel normal.
• The media has been awful to President
Donald Trump. President Trump has been
awful to the media. Both of these statements
are true at the same time. It is amazing
that both sides are pointing toward the
other and whining, “They started it.”
• We really, really, really miss the Cardinals
and the Blues.
• Is it really possible that the Blues win
their first Stanley Cup and then don’t get a
chance to defend it?
• The media reported last week that
Yadier Molina would be open to ending his
career with another team. Don’t you dare
let that happen, Bill Dewitt.
• How long will it take our eyes to readjust
and not see our co-workers inside a
perpetual Zoom window?
