“We haven’t moved people
too far from their original
polling place, and when I
say too far, it’s probably not
more than a 5-minute drive.”
According to Stream, this
was done in anticipation
of a lessened turnout percentage and
because many of the individuals that
traditionally staff polling places fall
into the “high risk” category for infection.
“We wanted to make sure we could
staff those locations safely,” Stream
said. “We need about eight poll workers
per location, and with the deputies
and everyone else, we’d need about
1,300 poll workers. A lot of our poll
workers are over 60 and over 70 … we
knew there would be a likelihood that
we’d get some cancellations.”
All poll workers on Election Day will
wear masks and gloves, and hand sanitizer
will be available for voters. Items

be wiped down with disinfectant wipes.
Social distancing also will be enforced
at the booths and in all lines.
“We’re taking every precaution to
make sure the polling places are clean
for both voters and poll workers,”
Stream said.
All polling places are scheduled to
open promptly at 6 a.m. on Election
Day. Doors will close and polling will
end at 7 p.m. According to the secretary
of state’s website, individuals that
are in line by 7 p.m. will be allowed to
cast their vote.

When Sr. Rosario retired and returned
to her native Ireland, she left her beloved
Irish Dancing program in Meesey’s
hands.
“The best part about it is that the girls
who are in eighth grade help the younger
students so I never felt lost, and we have
an alumni parent who comes back to
help me as well,” Meesey said. “I have
the privilege of keeping the Irish Dancing
tradition alive at Holy Infant.”
While the fifth through eighth grade
girls perform Irish Dances as part of the
St. Pat’s celebration, the fifth and sixth
grade boys sing three Irish songs and act
them out.
Another one of the things his students
have learned from him is selflessness as
evidenced by the final game of the last
boys basketball season.
During one of his classes this past
February, some of the boys on the eighth
grade basketball team asked if he would
come to one of their games.
“I said ‘yes,’ but that started a bit of
an uproar because the girls said, ‘You’ve
never been to one of our games.’ I said,
‘You never asked. I’ll go to any of your
games if you ask.’”
So off to watch basketball he went. A
few weeks later, the boys were set to
play in the West County CYC championships
and they asked Meesey if
he would attend again. He did and the
team won.
“After the game, each boy brought
their trophy up and put it in front of me
and said, ‘We dedicate this game to you.
Thank you for your support.’” He chuckles.
“One kid did take his trophy back.
He said, ‘I can’t give you my trophy, my
mom would kill me.’
“And, of course, I gave all their trophies
back but I did think that it was
really sweet that they thought that much
to do it.”
Now, Meesey has a “trophy” of his
own – the title of West Newsmagazine
Teacher of the Year. Additionally, he
will receive a new iPad and gift certificates
courtesy of the newsmagazine and
