THE MYSTERY of why<br />
boulders appeared near Shag<br />
Rock has been solved (see<br />
page 1).<br />
The 15 boulders will help<br />
protect white-flippered penguins<br />
during their nesting<br />
season from dogs and people.<br />
Nesting boxes were<br />
included in the Coastal<br />
pathway embankment but<br />
more protection has been<br />
deemed necessary – hence<br />
the boulders.<br />
The penguins nest and<br />
breed between August and<br />
February.<br />
White-flippered penguins<br />
are acutely threatened so very<br />
good care needs to be taken<br />
for their protection.<br />
So it’s great to see the city<br />
council doing its bit.<br />
And for Joe Public – stay<br />
away and keep your dog on<br />
a lead if you are near Shag<br />
Rock.<br />
That could be easier said<br />
than done, I suspect.<br />
