Karikaas triumphs in awards
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Cheesemaker Karikaas has a
golden glow following the
New Zealand Champions of
Cheese Awards.
The Loburnbased business
was awarded the only gold
medal in the European
category at the awards for its
maasdam. It was judged the
best Europeanstyle cheese.
The champion cheese,
which was also awarded the
European Trophy, was
crafted by new Karikaas
cheesemaker Petra Kasalova
and head cheesemaker Bryar
Enerson. It was made in
December 2019.
Maasdam has adistinctive
flavour —sweet and nutty —
and has adistinctive
appearance.
It is the cheese that is in
every cartoon where mice
and cheese are drawn
together —the cheese with
lovely big holes.
Karikaas manager Di
Hawkins says Petra, who
joined the production team
early in 2019, also made the
goldmedalwinning Pepper
cheese.
‘‘To have achieved such
excellence in cheesemaking
over that period of time
speaks volumes for her
dedication and skill,’’ Di says.
The Karikaas team also
won silver medals for all the
Karikaas standard cheeses —
gouda and leyden/cumin
gouda, and pumahana.
Karikaas is one of the few
cheesemakers that
specialises in vintage cheese,
Di says.
‘‘It takes ateam to make
winning cheeses, and
everyone at Karikaas
contributes to the quality of
what we make.
‘‘Noone can do it alone, but
it is always very pleasing for a
cheesemaker to get agold
medal, and atrophy is the
icing on the cake.
‘‘We pride ourselves on
consistently winning gold and
silver medals. We are good at
what we do, and our
customers appreciate that we
do it consistently.’’
Covid19 restrictions meant
the cheese awards event in
early May went ahead by
video via YouTube and
Facebook.
‘‘I sent all the staff alink so
that we could watch at 4pm
on May 6from our own homes
to see how we went,’’ Di says.
‘‘Delta wines were the
sponsors for the European
category, so Itoasted our win
with atoast to Delta wines,
because wine and cheese are
such agreat combination.’’
The Karikaas shop at
Loburn is closed to the public
at this time to protect the
manufacturing business.
However, Di says people
wanting to buy cheese can do
so by mail order and through
its website.
Recognition ... Petra Kasalova started with the Karikaas Cheese
production team early in 2019. Her skills have been recognised in
the New Zealand Champions of Cheese Awards.
Eyes to the sky for duck shooting
Hunters wereout in huge
numbers, as weretheir
feathered targets, at the
opening of the duck shooting
season on Saturday.
NorthCanterbury turned
on pretty good weather, with
established pondsproviding
some goodhunting, with bags
of around 30 to 70 birds per
pond being reported.
The threeweekdelaytothe
season due to theCovid19
lockdown failed to dampen
the enthusiasm of hunters,
with all of them just grateful
to finally be out theredoing it.
Hunters reported the best
numbers of birdsseen
frequenting ponds in many
years.
NorthCanterbury Fish and
Game rangers coveredawide
area to check for compliance,
whichthey found was high
across the region.
Hunters said the
Government’s decision to
delaythe startofthe game
bird seasonuntil after New
Zealand movedinto alert
level2,enabled the cultural
fabric of what is opening day
to be maintained.
Hunters were positive
aboutbeing able to enjoya
game bird season and grateful
to be able to get out hunting.
Fish &Game New Zealand
chiefexecutive MartinTaylor
said the weekend was an
important opportunity for
thousands of New Zealand
families to harvestsome
organic freerangefood for
the table.
‘‘In these economic times,
being able to provide good
wholesome wildfood may
takethe pressureoff some
families in the months
ahead,’’ he says.
New Zealand has many
places for hunters to gather
gamebirds, and many regions
benefit from the resultant
‘‘Duck Tourism’’.
Gamebird seasons vary in
lengthacross the country, so
hunters can travel to a
different region to increase
hunting opportunitiesand
support the regional
economy.
No agreement over Amberley tyre mountain
By ROBYN BRISTOW
Aplan to get rid of atyre mountain near
Amberley has hit aspeed bump.
The landownerisnot buying into aplan
by AccountabilityAction (AA) to shred
and ship the tyresoff the property.
AA members Julia McLean andBruce
Gledhill outlined their plan to the
Hurunui District Council last week. The
council agreedtohold funds if its
application to the Waste Minimisation
Fund was successful.
Richard Smith, the lawyer for the
RacecourseRoad landowner, says AA’s
business plan is the most ‘‘amateurish,
unsophisticated, and contradictory’’ he
has ever seen.
Hesaysuntil aviableformal business
plan is received by the landownerhe
cannotconsider endorsing an application
by AA to the Waste Minimisation Fund. A
plan has not been received.
Mr Smithsays the landownerdoesn’t
rule out working with AA, but it must be
collaborative rather than the ‘‘adversarial
approach’’ that had prevailed.
Meanwhile, adetermination as to who
owns the tyresisbefore the court, Mr
Smith says.
Until this was determined no progress
could be made by any party.
Mr Smith saysthe landowner alsohas
concerns over the shredder to be used to
processthe tyres before packing them
intocontainers to be shipped north to
Golden Bay Cement to fuel afurnace.
Mr Smith saysheand the landowner
are working with Environment
Canterbury to find away forward in both
legal and practical terms, including its
own application to the wastefund.
‘‘That application was drafted
collaboratively between the applying
party and the landowner,’’ Mr Smith said.
An initiative to turn aroundthe
lives of atrisk Kaikoura
youngsters has received a
major cash injection.
Christchurchbased Bros for
Change,which has been
operating in Kaikourasince
last year, has received $510,000
to offeranalternative
educationprogrammefor 15 to
24yearold males.
The programme usesTeAo
Maori protocols —aworld
view thatacknowledges the
interconnectednessand
interrelationshipofall living
and nonliving things.
The funding was announced
by Regional Economic
Development Minister Shane
Jones and Employment
Minister WillieJackson last
week.
Bros for Changefounder
Jaye Pukepuke saysthe
programme teaches lifeskills,
selfesteem, selfawareness,
selfrespect and selfmanagement
to youngmales
who have been ‘‘labelled’’.
‘‘You can’t justgodown the
street and say ‘look at those
naughtykids’.
‘‘They’re not naughty.
They’rejust doing what they
know.’’
He saysthere can be any
number of reasonswhy young
people fall through the cracks,
including being raised in solo
parent homes, having aparent
in jail, the lack of amale role
model, alcoholand drug abuse,
links to agang, ‘‘or they’re just
alone’’.
Jaye knows only too well how
things can go wrong.
‘‘I was contracted to playin
the NRL (NationalRugby
Making change ... Bros for Change founder Jaye Pukepuke with boys he has helped.
League) but Icouldn’t get avisa
because Ihad acriminal
record.
‘‘Teacherstold me Iwas
stupid and Ibelieved it. But
just because someone says
something it doesn’t meanthey
know you. Sometimesitjust
takessomeone to say ‘good job’
or ‘you can do it’.’’
Jaye says the funding will
allowrenovations to be
completed at Brosfor Change’s
new Kaikouraheadquarters,
as well as funding the courses,
with the next one scheduled to
start in July.
While the sixmonth
programme is Te Ao Maori
based, it is open to any young
maleaged 15 to 24, who are all
selfreferred.
‘‘Any male in thatage group
can ask to come on this
programme andthen we will
assess whether the programme
is right for them.’’
The programme is not
curriculumbased,but it can
leadtoyoungpeople being
abletoreturn to school or
moveontotertiary education.
PHOTO: SUPPLIED
‘‘NCEAiscurriculumbased
and it’s not an outcome these
young peopleare ready for,’’
Jaye says.
‘‘An outcomefor us is having
ahot meal or not smashing
windows today. You’ve got to
be realistic about the
backgrounds or the upbringing
these young people have come
from.
‘‘It’snot that we can’t reach
them. It’s about getting those
life skills right and allowing
them to haveconfidence in
themselves.’’
Waimakariri rates rise pinned to 1.5pc
By DAVID HILL
Waimakariri residentswill get some rates
relief. Councillorshave deliberated on a
revised 2020/21 annual planwhich will
see rates risebyanaverage1.5 percent
across the district,insteadofthe 4%
forecastinthe draftannual plan.
The revision follows the lockdown,
whichcost the council about $2.25 million
in lost incomeand related expenses,
whichwill be paid off over 10 years.
MayorDan Gordonsays council staff
achieved savingsof$2.9m by reviewing
the capital works programme, adjusting
earthquake loan repayments,astaff wage
freeze and deferring new projects.
“To get to 1.5% we have takenalong,
hard lookatour finances and adjusted
our plans,projections and assumptions
for the coming years.
‘‘We’veheard from residentsthat they
are lookingfor us to keep any increasesas
low as possiblethis year while positioning
the council to helpWaimakariri recover.”
While some capitalprojects are being
deferred the council is pressingahead
with a$67m capital works programme,
including thecompletion of the $28m
The council’s five‘‘shovelready’’
projects, submitted to central government
to assistwith the Covid19 recovery, have
all beenshort listed, leaving him
optimisticofalocal cash injection.
‘‘I’m hopeful, fingers crossed, that we
may get some investment, but there’s 800
projects beingconsidered.’’
Two projects, the ‘‘WheelstoWaipara’’
cycleway and the Woodend Bypass, would
haveregionwide benefits,hesays.The
three others are realignment of Skewbridge
Smoky outdoor fires
generate complaints
By SHELLEY TOPP
Outdoor fires have provenanuisance in
the Waimakariri Districtthis month, with
tighter winter rules applying.
During the first 19 days of thismonth, 17
complaints were filedwith Environment
Canterbury (ECan) over outdoor firesin
the district.
‘‘Outdoorburningcan be anuisance for
neighbours and can add to air pollution
caused by other sourcessuch as home
heating,’’ECan’s Waimakariri zone
delivery lead, Marco Cataloni, says.
‘‘Because of this, we encourage
alternatives such as mulching,
composting, kerbside collection services,
taking garden rubbish to the local transfer
station, or hiring achipper and using or
selling the chips.’’
Although the Canterbury Air Regional
Plan allows some outdoor burning, it is not
permitted on propertieswithin acleanair
zone betweenMay 1and August 31.
In Rangiora, the 5125.64hectare clean
air zoneincludes the townshipand alarge
area of rural land extendingout to Dixons
Road in the north, Plaskett and Merton
roadsinthe west, and almostupto
Hicklands Road in the south, withthe
eastern boundaryless clearly defined by
roads.
Anyone planning an outdoor burn must
also alwayscheckwith Fire and
EmergencyNew Zealand onlineat
checkitsalright.nz to ensurethey comply
with any seasonal restrictionsor
permitting requirements.
However,ifall the environmentally
friendly options have been rejected andan
outdoor burn is permitted under ECan and
Fire and EmergencyNZrules,the person
who lightsthe firemust still adhere to
strict requirements on the day or facea
$300 fine for afire on private property and
$1000 forafireoncommercial property.
‘‘We would encourageanyone planning
to undertake an outdoorburn of their
green waste to contactusfirst,’’ Marco
says.
‘‘Our officers can provideguidance and
advice.’’
If an outdoor burn is to take placethe
wind must be blowing away from
neighbouring properties,fires must not be
lit on still days which can causethe smoke
to hang around, or very windydays
becauseofunpredictable windchanges, or
if rain is forecast.
The vegetation must alsobedry and the
fire must start with asmall pile and be hot
with agood flame to minimise smoke.
If the burn is likely to last for more than
three days, asmoke managementplan is
required.
Burningrelated incidentscan be
reported, withasmuchdetailaspossible,
to ECan on 0800 765 588.
Once an offence has been identified,
ECan staff will investigate and, in many
cases, theyare still able to determine a
breach of the rules daysafterthe event.
Schools look to get creative
By DAVID HILL
Local schools are looking for more
creative ways to engage with next year’s
intakeofstudents due to Covid19
restrictions.
Open nights and enrolment for
prospective Year 9pupils usually takes
place duringMay and June, but
Canterbury’sstate secondaryschools
agreedtocancel open nights in
response to Covid19.
Rangiora and Kaiapoi high schools
plan to hold virtual open nights to
engagewith families ahead of
enrolments.
RangioraNew LifeSchool principal
Stephen Walters says open nights are an
important part of easing the transition
to high school.
‘‘In our case the parentshave usually
already made up their mind, so it’s often
abouthelping the childtotransition by
familiarising them with their new
school, so hopefully schoolswill be able
to open up later in the year.
‘‘Usually they start lookingfrom Year
6or7,sobythe time theyget to Year 8
they have usually made up their minds.’’
For now, mostCanterbury schools
have restrictions on parentsbeing on
site, which is unlikely to change until
the countrymovesout of alert level 2.
‘‘It is possible to have informal visits
and showpeople around, so the smaller
schoolswill be able to do it on an ad hoc
basis, but that’smore difficult for the
larger schools.’’
Keeping to the restrictions is
essential to reducing the riskof
spreading Covid19, as one confirmed
casecould see aschool shutdown for up
to two weeks,ashappened when
Kaiapoi HighSchool had asuspected
casejust before lockdown.
Mr Walters says his school is sitting on
its maximum roll of 470,sothere were
no plansfor an open night.
‘‘Wedidn’t have one last year because
we didn’t have any vacancies.Even at
the primary school, last year we only
accepted new entrants of siblings.
‘‘Wehave been actively lobbyingthe
Ministry [of Education] for aroll
increase and, until that happens, we
havelimited space available.’’
Retailers step up
We havebeen at level 2for two weeks
now. It has been great to see peopleout
and about again.Ipersonally enjoyed
beingable to get back into the office, to
pop out for acoffee and support acafe,
and shop at local retailers.
Ihave been impressed to see how our
retailershave all stepped up to operate
safely within the new restrictions.
Iencourage everyone who can to get
out and support local businesses.
Red Bus cancelling the Oxford Bus
Service and the proposed closure of the
Bunnings store in Rangiora have been
disappointing.Iampleased to have been
able to go into bat on bothmatters, as I
wouldfor other issues in our community.
Oxford has been able to secure private
and community providerswho are
delivering atransport solution.
Ihope Bunnings willreconsider its
proposal to close the Rangiora store.
Thesetwo example highlight the
difficulteconomic timesfaced by many. It
is important to support each other and be
kind through this time.
Council pools and librarieshave
reopened,with social distancing rules in
place. We are working out the details of
how to reopenother venues.
As Iwrite, the council is heading into
makingdecisions on the Annual Planthis
week. Thingshave changed since we first
drafted the planand the rates increase
we had signalled at an average 4percent
across the district earlier this year will be
significantly less.
Thecouncil is looking to adopta
responsiblebudget that keeps rates as
lowaspossible while supporting
essential services,and aprogramme that
provides the right level of stimulus to our
local economy.
It is always abalancing act,but this
year moresothan others.
We have heard the concerns of our
community and are acting appropriately.
At the same time, work is goingonto
developadistrict recovery plan.
We celebrateQueens Birthday this
weekend. It will be achancetoget out
anddomore than we have previously
been able.
Relax and connect with family and
friends. Ilook forward to doing this and
getting along to our beaches, out for a
walk, and supporting localoutlets.
Eira stands tall at
totara tree planting
Former Rangiora New Life
student Eira Beverley
Stone’s has been awarded the
Rangiora Rotary Club’s
Young Totara Award.
Eira, who is now a
Canterbury University
science student, earned the
award for leadership among
her peers and in the
community.
‘“I am very pleased to have
received the award which
encourages all young people
to look beyond themselves
and show leadership in
helping others and serving
the community,” she says.
Eira celebrated the award
by planting atotara at
Southbrook’s Hegan Reserve,
supported by her parents,
Eirylys and Mathew.
Rangiora Rotary president
Dorothy Stewart says the
awards are very special and
hardearned.
‘‘They recognise the
positive achievements of
young people who provide a
role model for their peers,’’
she says.
Award for Ribbonwood
By ROBYN BRISTOW
There was no glitz and glamour at the
annual Vision Insurance Bed and
Breakfast Awards this year, but there
was still plenty to celebrate for Gary
Mitchell and Robert Day, of Cheviot.
Their Ribbonwood Country House
won the 2020 Essence of Bed and
Breakfast of the Year Award, and was
Highly Commended in the
Exceptional Bed and Breakfast
award.
The awards were held recently via
conferencing app Zoom.
‘‘We were meant to be conferencing
for four days last week in
Christchurch with the awards dinner
on Saturday night, but this was all
cancelled due to Covid19,’’ Gary
says.
‘‘Instead, many people got dressed
up in red and black and Zoomed for
the awards presentations.
‘‘It was not quite the same as being
there in person but better than not
celebrating it after all the work that
went into the entries,’’ Gary says.
The incoming president of the Bed
&Breakfast Association NZ, Donna
Brooke, says Gary and Robert
‘‘breathed the essence of home
hosting into their award entry’’.
‘‘It really stood out to me that the
Recognition ... Ribbonwood’s bed and
breakfast operation picked up an honour
in the annual Vision Insurance Bed and
Breakfast Awards.
guests and, in fact, the community in
general, were treated with the
welcome, the sharing and the
professionalism with which this B&B
operates.
‘‘It is something that all B&Bs aspire
to be like.’’
Hopes to extend NCTIR stay
CraigMacklehopes to persuade the North
Canterbury Transport Infrastructure
Recovery (NCTIR) alliance to stay in
Kaikourabeyond itsDecember deadline.
The Kaikoura Mayor says there are
several ‘‘shovelready’’and consented
projects for NCTIR to continuewith,but
they have been shelved due to the push to
have otherwork completedbyDecember.
‘‘If the governmentislooking at waysto
employ people, we haveasituationwhere
there’s150 local jobs at stake, so why not
extend the deadline. The funding was
theretobegin with, but they can’t get it
done within the timeframe.’’
Mr Mackle says extending NCTIR’s
deadline would not only keep locals
employedintransportrelatedwork,but it
would ‘‘keep the localcafes occupied’’.
He says the Kaikoura District Council is
busy rewriting its draft annual plan to
reflect the new postCovid19 reality and
expects the average rates rise to be lower
than previously signalled. ‘‘Wehave
knocked ahole in it and it doesn’t affect
roading or infrastructure, becausewe
don’t want to risk goingbackwards. People
have been calling for azero rates rise, but
then you set yourself up to fail.’’
Mr Mackle is confident there are
opportunities for growthinthe post Covid
19 environment.

Valley, in the high country where North
Canterbury meets the West Coast.
They have created wooden trapping
tunnels to help control rats, stoats,
hedgehogs and other predators, in aplan
created with partners that include the
Gone bush ... George Moran installs one
of the new traps in the Nina Valley.
Department of Conservation.
The Nina Valley traps were handed
over to aconservation enthusiast,
George Moran, who arranged their
transport into the target area.
George and his wife, Celia, linked up
with ahelicopter to get them into the
south side of the valley.
Both George and Lynn are grateful to
Ryman Healthcare for providing
funding for the wood, nails and screws
for all of the traps being built at the
village, with building supplies merchant
Kaiapoi ITM helping with timber.
Retailer Macpac has helped with the
purchase of hardware, including trap
mechanisms and stainless steel baffles.
George and Celia are part of aselfnamed
group of ‘‘Doubtless
Conservation’’ volunteers and friends.
“The name harks back to the name of
ahut which was the first place that Celia
and Istarted our volunteer work on.
‘‘Incidentally, the Doubtless Hut is in
the valley adjacent to the Nina valley —
so in one sense we haven’t (moved) very
far.”
Ateam of 10 worked recently to set the
traps around the Nina Valley conservation
area.
The trap lines will be checked every
four weeks.
“The reason we are concentrating on
this area is that it helps extend the
fantastic work undertaken by the Nina
Valley Restoration Group at Hurunui
College.
‘‘Over the last 10 years this group has
undertaken extensive trapping and
monitoring work in this valley, which
enabled 16 roroa/greatspotted kiwi to
be released into here from Arthur’s Pass
around 10 years ago,” George says.
Lynn says he and other volunteers,
including Ryman residents Ross
Stewart, Murray Giles, Lindsay Rowe
and Kevin Hurley, built the wooden
tunnels especially for the Nina Valley
and to DOC specifications.
Pressure to meet deadline
The Covid19 lockdown has put pressure
on getting Kaikoura’s earthquake
infrastructure recoveryprojects
completed on time.
Work on councilledrebuildsites,which
were idle duringthe lockdown, are being
accelerated in abid to meet the June 30
deadline.
Some roads may be closed so the work
can be completed.
Mill Rd is closed because of works on its
bridge, while the intersection of Mt Fyffe
and Schoolhouseroadswill be closedfor
threeweeks from June 2toreplace the
culverts and widen the intersection.
‘‘If you receive regular visitors or
deliveries suchasmilk tankers, please
ensure they’ve noted the signs thatwill go
up aweek before works commence, to let
them know of the changes,’’ acouncil
spokesperson said.
The councilsays it is on track to
complete the new pressure sewer system
alongBeach Roadnext month.

New breed of fire
causes asensation
Arevolutionary new breedofwood fireis
keeping manyCanterbury homes snugand
warm,nightand day, while saving on
wood.
The Blaze King catalytic log burner
burnsfor 12 hours or more without having
to be stoked up.
It uses catalyst cleanair technology that
not onlyburns wood, but alsothe smoke,
generating heat and therefore reducing
wood consumption.
Made in Canada by Blaze King, they
arrived in Canterbury four years ago, and
are available only through HeatStore.
HeatStore managerDavidChalklen says
they are quickly settingthe standard for
ultralowemission burners(ULEB).
‘‘There’snothing elselike these on the
New Zealand market. Everyone is raving
aboutit,’’Davidsays.
‘‘Thefeedback from our customers is
phenomenal, and we’re getting customer’s
friends and familycoming in askingfor
them.’’
Davidsays being abletogenerate heat
from otherwise wasted energyinsmoke
allows for acleaner burn, while also using
aboutathird less wood than conventional
fires.
Abuiltin thermostat constantly
monitorsthe heat outputand
automatically adjuststhe air required for
combustion.
This enables an exceptionally long burn
time and makesthe Blaze King fires
amongthe most efficient in the world.
BlazeKing has a40year historyof
making wood firesand a30year awardwinning
history of making catalyticwood
fires, mainly to heat homesinthe freezing
Canadian winter.
Davidsays alarge part of the appeal is
beingable to wake to awarm home without
worryingaboutthe fire going out during
the night.
In fact, the fires are so popular there is
even atrendofthem being installed in
Cleanair technology ... Blaze King
catalytic log burners can burn for 12 hours
or more without having to be stoked up.
rural homes that do notneed to meet the
ultra low emission standard.
Top tyre specialists
The experienced and friendly team at
Arthur Burke is ready to help you with
all your winter motoring needs.
The Amberleybased company has
been ensuring safe motoring for all its
North Canterbury customers for 85
years.
For 15 of those years, Arthur Burke
has been aBridgestone dealer.
Bridgestone Tyre Bay manager Ashley
Upritchard, who joined the company in
2007, can help you choose the right tyres
for your vehicle.
Tyres are an essential safety feature of
cars and farm vehicles, so looking after
them is important.
Regular checks of your tyres, wheel
alignment and the air pressure can help
save you money by cutting fuel costs and
reducing the risk of expensive repairs.
Adverse winter conditions can make
roads slippery, reducing friction, so now
is the time to get tyre treads checked to
ensure they keep you safe on the road
and down on the farm.
Ash can help you choose the right tyres
for your vehicle, and also check that the
wheels are aligned so you get good
mileage from your tyres.
His 13 years of experience in the tyre
bay, combined with the fullservice
facilities and alignment plant, will help
ensure your vehicle corners, brakes and
accelerates safely in winter conditions.
The company has tyres to fit every
vehicle, from everyday cars to allterrain
fourwheeldrive vehicles and
motorbikes. It also offers afull puncture
repair service for everything from cars,
trucks and utes to prams, wheelbarrows
and bicycles.
It offers wheel balancing, nitrogen
tyre inflation, tyre safety checks, and
tyre rotations to even out the wear.
Prompt and efficient service ensures
everyone is back on the road quickly and
safely.
For all your tyre needs, and wheel
balancing and alignment work, contact
Ash on (03) 314 0137. The tyre bay is open
Farming myths must be dispelled
By DAVID HILL
Changing perceptions about agricultural
careers is aconstant battle.
New Zealand Young Farmers (NZYF)
has been working to dispel myths that
agriculture ‘‘is not an academic subject’’
or that you have to come from afarm,
chief executive Lynda Coppersmith says.
‘‘I had aconversation withaparent
recently whose son had left school and
wanted to go into farming.
‘‘The parent discouraged him because
of the view thathecould ‘do better’and
that owning yourown farm is now an
impossibledream. Iset them straight on
that.
‘‘Asanindustryweneed to be
influencing the influencers who have an
impact on the decisions young people
makeabout theirfuture.’’
In recentyears NZYF has offered a
“teachers’day out” as away of
‘‘educating teachers that farming and
associatedindustries are afantastic
career choice for smartyoung people’’.
‘‘Weare also focusing on strategiesto
target parents’perceptions. It’s areal
challenge and, as asector, we need to do
more,’’ she says.
One way of dispelling myths is rolemodelling
successful young people.
‘‘While there are plenty of
opportunities workingonfarm,thereare
alsosome wonderful rolesin, for
example, environmentalscience,farm
support, research and development,
marketing, sales, IT and many others.’’
For young womenconsidering acareer
in agriculture, Lynda advises: ‘‘Don’t be
discouraged by setbacksornegative
comments’’.
‘‘It’s awonderful industry to be
working in and thereare plentyof
women role models and networksto
reach out to for support.’’
NZYFisunique in having women in
the roles of chiefexecutive and board
chair, but barriers continue to get in the
way of young womenexcelling, and that
is not unique to agriculture, Lyndasays.
‘‘Toovercome thisweneed to give
young women not just the skills, but the
confidence to overachieve.
‘‘Challenging unconscious bias
towardswomen taking on these roles is
hardwork.
Dispelling myths ... Lynda Coppersmith says encouraging young people to get into
agriculture is not easy.
PHOTO:FILE
‘‘Confidence and resilienceis
required.’’
For young people interestedina
careerinagriculture,the bestway to
start is to get aweekend or holiday job on
afarm or join alocalyoung farmersclub
or TeenAg club at school, Lyndasays.
‘‘The agriculturesector is cryingout
for youngpeople who want to pick
produce or milk cows. This willgive you
atasteofwhat it is like to work on afarm.
‘‘I know several people who somehow
ended up working on afarm with no prior
interest in farming and thishas led to a
long and happy careerinagriculture.’’
Will Wilding hasn’t seen his
The lockdown meant the
Feilding on May 13, where
his bull Te Mania18555 sold
‘‘There was some really
good feedback about him, so
that was good.’’ Willsays.
‘‘With thismeanttobethe
the sale,but we haven’t been
able to go thisyear.
‘‘It’s been interesting
the year at his new home
Subdivision company
steps up for trust
By ROBYN BRISTOW
RavenswoodDevelopmentshas swung
behind the work of the Community
Wellbeing NorthCanterbury Trust.
The developerofRavenswood
subdivision, just northofWoodend,will
donate $2000tothe trustfrom every
section soldinits Stage2residential
area untilthe end of the year.
This could boost the coffers of the
trustbyup to $26,000,with 13 sections
available in Stage2.
It comes on top of an initialdonation
of $5000 RavenswoodDevelopmentshas
already made.
Ravenswoodrepresentative Jenny
Lake says the company is all about
community.
The team at Ravenswood
Developments wanted to helpthe North
Canterbury community in atime of great
need. It decided to support the trust,
whichisworking in North Canterbury to
help families struggling with the impact
of Covid19.
“Community Wellbeing North
Canterbury Trustisuniquelylocal to
NorthCanterbury and is facing
unprecedented demand,’’ Jenny says.
‘‘More thanever before,they needour
support to meetthis growing demand
and to help local families,”she says.
Community Wellbeing North
Canterbury Trustmanager Deirdre
Ryan says demandfor the trust’s free
social and community services has
increased significantly in recent weeks.
“Our Kaiapoi CommunitySupport
food pantry has seena150 percent
increaseindemand since the start of
lockdown.
‘‘Families who have never needed to
access our services before are now
coming to us for help.’’
She saysshe is delighted that
Ravenswood has chosentopartner with
the trust.
“Ravenswood’s generous donation
will help us to help NorthCanterbury
families strugglingwiththe impactof
‘‘Their commitment will also helpus
The trust has begun aCovid19 Crisis
Appeal.
“If we are to help our peopletonot
only survive this crisis, but to come
through it thriving, we must act urgently
and it cannot be donewithout your
help,’’ Deirdre says.
Housing market buoyant
By SHELLEY TOPP
Fears of adownturninthe real estate
industry following the Covid19
pandemic are unfounded, saysBayleys
North Canterburymanager
Ross Ditmer.
‘‘We are not seeing any
price reduction,’’ he says.
‘‘Buyer enquiryisgoing
through the roof and we are
getting multiple offerson
many properties.
‘‘If you want to sell your
house,now is agood time
because thereisalot of
interest out there.’’
Mr Ditmer believes this is because the
Covid19 lockdown has given couples
time to evaluate their future in thesame
way some do during the Christmas/New
Year holidays.
‘‘Often, properties go on the market
after Christmas when peoplehave had
the chance to sit down and chatabout
where they are going and what theyare
doing.
‘‘Our rural side of the business is also
showing alot of activity,’’ he says.
Ross Ditmer
‘‘In my personal opinion, the rural
side of things is going wellbecause
farmers haven’t been affectedasmuch
(during the Covid19 lockdown) because
they havecontinued to work and
continued to produce, as an
essential service.
‘‘Life is more normalfor
them comparedtothe people
who have been in lockdown
unable to work.’’
There hasalso beenahuge
increase in interest from
overseas buyers,particularly
in rural properties.
‘‘The Bayleys New Zealand
websitenormally has about 15
percent of traffic fromoverseasbuyers,
but since lockdownitissitting at 45%.
‘‘For us, as aCanterburycompany, we
know of one couplefrom the United
Kingdom who have purchased a
substantial property (in WestMelton), so
there are people buying properties
without seeing them, that’s for sure.
‘‘I haven’t had any of my agents tellme
they havehad any sales from overseas
buyersyet but they have been dealing
with alot of enquiry.’’

Emma is back in business
By SHELLEY TOPP
Emma’s at Oxford is among araft
Covid19 lockdown.
Emma Gillard says the
lockdown restrictions have been
tough on her popular book and
gift shop, with trade 75% down on
the same time last year.
She says her shop has been
busy in the days following the
move to alert level 2, but she
remains ‘‘very grateful to every
single customer’’ in these ‘‘very
scary times'’.
She is celebrating reopening
by giving away afree copy of a
special book to North Canterbury
News readers.
English writer Charlie
It was published in October
Someone’s Wife: AMemoir of
Sorts, by Linda Burgess
The title specifically refers to
Linda’s experience in the 1970s
of being married to an All Black.
In the opening essay, she
describes, pointedly and
amusingly, how the existence of
women barely registered in that
world, and when it did, it was
resented. In one deftly sketched
scene, the wives are refused
entry to an aftermatch function,
but told by the official that they
are welcome to help out in the
kitchen.
The Shearers, by Ruth Entwistle
Low
The Shearers is acolourful
account of the men and women,
past and present, who have
committed their lives to shearing
in New Zealand. Their voices —
in their own words, often brutally
honest reflections on the work —
are at the heart of this book: their
training, their tools, their
camaraderie, and the gruelling,
itinerant nature of the job.
Outgrowing God, by Richard
Dawkins
For anyone hoping to grapple
with the meaning of life and what
to believe, Outgrowing God is a
challenging, thrilling and
revelatory read.
The Covid19lockdown has
perfect opportunity to get
thingsstart rolling fast. A
website was created, a
The arts trail,described
allowspeople to ‘‘enjoy a
drive in the countrysideand
visit local artists’’.
With largeevents such as
the Kaiapoi Art Expo in
doubt for theforeseeable
future, the new initiative
allowsartists to support each
other in reaching their
audience in creative ways.
Brent says the initiative
uses the sameideas he and
his wife, Shirley,successfully
used to selltheirartworkto
15 countries.
‘‘I am remindedwhen,
duringthe earthquakes,we
had no power, no water and
we were unable to live
onsite, yet we were still
getting orders from the
UnitedStates for our
sculptures.
“The Key of Knowledge ..“(Luke 11:52)
THE ENTRANCE OF SIN
After God stating his creative work verygood, he gives direction to the man and woman.
Genesis 2:16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying “Of every tree of the
garden you may freely eat. But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not
eat of it: for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.
Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field that the LORD
God had made. He said unto the woman, “Yea, has God said Youshall not eat of every
tree of the garden?
verse 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Youshall not surely die:
verse 5 ForGod knows that in the day you eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and
you shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
verse 6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant
to the eyes, and atree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and
did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her;and he did eat.
(By one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin: and so death passed on all men,
for that all have sinned Romans 5:12)
God questions their actions, whether they have disobeyed his commandment. The man
blames God and the woman, and the woman blames the serpent. (Sin is the transgression
of the law).
God’s judgement on the serpent -you are cursed above all cattle and every beast of the
field, you will crawl on your belly all the days of your life. There would be enmity between
him and the woman and between his seed and her seed, it shall bruise your head and you
shall bruise his heel. (One atemporaryblow and one amortal blow).
God’s judgement on the woman -God would greatly multiply her sorrow and conception,
in sorrow you shall bring forth children; and your desire shall be to your husband, and he
shall rule over you.
God’s judgement on the man -Because you have hearkened to the voice of your wife, and
have eaten of the tree, of which Icommanded you saying “You shall not eat of it, cursed is
the ground for your sake, in sorrow shall you eat of it all the days of your life: thorns and
thistles shall it bring forth to you, and you shall eat the herb of the field. In the sweat of
your face shall you eat bread, till you returntothe ground, for out of it were you taken, for
dust you are and unto dust you shall return.
But God in mercy, provided coats of skins to cover them, -the shed blood pointing forward
to aplan of redemption, life out of death.
