Cashmere coach wins
top international award

A CASHMERE High School
teacher’s passion for coaching
the next generation of problem
solvers has been internationally
recognised this month.
Future Problem Solving Coach
Sue Williams was awarded
the Keith Frampton Memorial
Award for being this year’s International
Coach of the Year.
The subject studied topics
which were important to humanity
and were usually set in the
next 25 years – anything between
the importance of coral reefs,
the use of drones to the justice
system in the future.
The nominations and award
took the Merivale teacher by
surprise.
“It was a complete surprise
and it blew me away, but it’s an
honour,” she said.
Mrs Williams has taught at the
school for nine years and said
challenging students to think
deeper and broadening their
curiosity was a rewarding part of
the job.
“I like how it retains curiosity
in kids, they can look broadly at
big topics in a range of perspectives,”
she said.
“And you’re not telling them
what to think, you’re teaching
them how to think.”
Mrs Williams has been a coach
and mentor across six schools in
the city and is currently on the
National Administration Board
for Future Problem Solving NZ.
She originally wanted to be a
scientist, but being a teacher allowed
her to mix knowledge and
her love of people in a role she
enjoyed.
Her current group of problem
solvers were meant to compete
in Massachusetts, United States
at the FPS International World
Finals, but it was held virtually
due to Covid-19.
One topic was about how to
make an uninhabitable place –
like in space – into a sustainable
environment for the human
population.
The programme also taught
students important writing and
scenario performance skills
which turned ideas into organised
solutions; identify underlying
problems in communities
today.
It was because of this that she
believed young people should get
involved and challenge themselves.
“They are the next generation
of this planet and it enables them
to engage with the future in a
productive way.”
Rotary helps create
community space
ROTARY CLUBS across the city
have joined forces to develop a
dedicated garden and market
space in Cashmere.
The overgrown pocket of land
will be developed on the grounds
of disability service provider
Hohepa Canterbury and was
made possible by the Rotary Clubs
of Riccarton, Hornby, Papanui,
Cashmere and Christchurch
Sunrise.
The area became overrun
and unusable following the
earthquakes, therefore Hohepa
Canterbury decided to construct
a pathway and reflection garden -
but was struggling with funding.
Said the Rotary Club of Riccarton
president Greg Cayford:
“We will be sharing with, and
working alongside residents, day
community members, parents and
staff who may choose to engage
with the project.
“This project is highlighting that
there are many connections already
established between Rotary
clubs, individual members and
with Hohepa Canterbury.”
Hohepa Canterbury provides
support to 130 special needs
children and adults with an
intellectual disability to live fully
engaged lives.
They offer diverse living
options, learning and activity
programs, community participation,
and therapies inspired by
anthroposophy - a holistic philosophy
encompassing the planet,
the people and spiritual essence.
One of anthroposophy’s key
teachings is that physical wellbeing
is enhanced by creating
physical environments for work
and living that provide a positive
experience.
Aside from providing the
campus with a “welcoming, visually
appealing streetscape,” the
stream boundary was integral
to the well-being of the Hohepa
community.
The area’s mature trees will
be enhanced by green space and
plantings, providing a natural
area for reflection.
The gathering space will host activities
such as market stalls selling
Hohepa farm goods and seasonal
activities such as carol singing.
“As meetings have been held
between Rotary representatives
and the Hohepa team, it has
become clear that there are
further enhancements we can
develop together as the project
progresses and nears completion,”
said Mr Cayford.
