WHY DAVID MEANS SO MUCH TO US
UNCONDITIONAL LOVE
After exiting the foster care system, David Hornsby was left to fend for himself. He didn’t know where to go or
what to do with his life and soon ended up sleeping at a children’s playground. Parents of children at the park
threatened him before they realized he was homeless. So, one of the families offered David a place to stay.
For a few months, he thrived and bonded with the family and their teenage son. But, his luck soon changed.
One night, while he was traveling with the family’s son, the father, the uncle and the father’s friend, their car was
pulled over by the police. Several pounds of marijuana, cocaine, and three guns were found in the trunk. Despite
having no connection to what was in the car, David was charged and sent to prison for two years.
It was “the worst time of my life,” he said. “The only time I ever had a visitor was my lawyer whenever there was
a court date.” After he was released from jail, David headed to California for a job. Sitting by himself on a beach in
San Diego, he decided to cut ties to his old life and to start anew in the Golden State. Eventually, he made his way
to L.A., staying at the beach in Santa Monica before ending up in Hollywood.
Without a place to stay, he lived in Covenant House California’s transitional housing facilities before
eventually moving out on his own. At the Cov, he learned how to take care of himself, manage his own finances,
and find a career where he would thrive. (continued on page 16)
