After the wintriest winter in a long time, some
of us are feeling a little off balance. Here on the
West Coast our homes and our bodies are set up
for more temperate conditions and an outdoor
lifestyle. This recent long spell of heavy coats and
indoor activities can leave us uninspired and low
in energy.
But we’ve all heard the geese flying overhead,
the drumming of the woodpeckers, and slowly
the warblers are returning. Nature isn’t fooled or
discouraged by cold winds and grey skies. The air
smells of warming earth and blossoms.
I always want to stop time in the earliest spring.
To capture that pure potential, the impulse
without form. It’s in the flush of bare branches
and the stirring of the forest floor before new
shoots appear. But no: spring is relentless. And
before we know it, everything is green and
lively, and our energy reignites. A lot of us feel
overwhelmed trying to keep up with the frenzy
of the awakening world.
The ancient Greeks had two notions of time:
Chronos, the ineluctable vector that takes us
from birth to death, and Kairos, the moment to
seize, the chance to act with expedience. The
former we run from, the latter we run toward,
and we’re successful in neither. But still we run.
Now that spring has undeniably arrived and light
and sunshine take centre stage, we’d be better to
do what the ferns are doing right now: emerge and
expand into each broadening instant. To unfold,
graciously and with gratitude, and in good time.
through the lens of GREG EYMUNDSON
Greg Eymundson came to the Sunshine Coast for a
relaxing retreat from his busy professional life. That
didn’t last long. He looked around and saw a large
and growing need for his field of expertise: highend,
professional visual marketing services. He
also saw a place of extraordinary natural beauty,
a place he’d love to call home. Eymundson has
been in the business for more than thirty years,
on the leading edge of a field that has seen many
technological changes and evolutions. Starting out
as a photographer, he developed and expanded
his interest and expertise as he realized the
possibilities for the industry’s scope and direction.
His company, Insight-Photography, is now a full
marketing services production company. His work
has taken him all over the world, from Whistler to
Milan, and his clients fall into pretty much every
category under the sun, from fashion to food to
fine-art prints, product promotion, real estate,
tourism/travel, lifestyles, weddings, wellness, and
a great deal more.
life on the coast. in pictures.
GREG EYMUNDSON
Here on the Coast, Eymundson has been busy creating
professional visual tours (both ground and aerial) for
our burgeoning property market, using the most current
interactive technology. Virtual tours and aerial shots
aren’t luxury options anymore, and demand has been
skyrocketing.
Running a business has never been more complex, as
Eymundson knows very well. His handle on the diverse and
expanding terrain of marketing allows clients to focus on
their business, products, services, and direction. Much of
this has the benefit of bringing our area of the world into
focus. Gorgeous sharp stills, awe-inspiring aerial shots, and
360-degree interactive images—his work highlights what
this area has to offer. Eymundson is proud of “giving back
to the entire Coast by helping to promote all of it on the
world stage, as a recreation, cultural, and potential living
destination.”
Asked what he loves about the Sunshine Coast, Eymundson
rhapsodizes, “The vast expanse of ocean, forest, lakes,
views, and the overall mystique that feels like we live on an
island, a very beautiful island.”
And is he excited about the future here?
“I see the potential for positive, environmentally minded
economic growth in the near future, which supports both
business and cultural diversity within the Sunshine Coast
corridor.”
the poetry of colour
COLIN RIGHTON
WORDS | NANCY PINCOMBE
10

When someone has travelled all over Europe,
Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Papua New
Guinea, and South America (to name a few
places), the decision to settle here on the
Sunshine Coast is, at the very least, informed:
“I have been on the Coast now for nine years.
It is a beautiful place and an inspiration. What
brought me to the Coast was a desire for more
tranquil surroundings and a smaller community,
at the same time still having good access to the
city, its art scene and amenities.”
As content as he is to hang his hat here, Righton
still finds that travel is essential to stimulating
creativity. He goes to Argentina regularly and
maintains a studio there, calling it a “fascinating
and energizing environment.”
This energy is evident in all of Righton’s work.
Kaleidoscopic colour, movement, and vivacity
are the first impressions. Many paintings hint at
(or point boldly to) an underlying vivid rainbow
upon which form is imposed. This love of colour
is reminiscent of the Fauves (early twentiethcentury
artists, mostly from France, such as
Gauguin and Matisse). Over and over, reflection
is juxtaposed, balanced, and interspersed with
exuberance. Movement with stillness. There is a
hint of melancholy in his more figurative pieces,
but Righton doesn’t leave the viewer there.
Scratch the surface and you get: fun!
Clients all over the world agree. Righton’s
work has met with widespread appreciation
through international group exhibits, gallery
representation, and private sales. This year
will be busy, starting with a show at the Sechelt
Art Gallery (May 10–June 4) entitled “A Point
of View.” For this show he wants to highlight
how subjective human experience is, noting,
“. . . whatever one experiences in life depends
on that particular moment in time, where one is
standing, and in which direction one is facing.”
Righton is full of energy and plans (including the
possibility of holding a workshop this year) and
invites you to join him “in both his inward and
outward journeys, through his art.”
feminine spirits
ANNA GREEN
Anna Green’s self-possessed females will make you smile. They are all busy doing their own thing, playing music, smelling the roses, perfecting
yoga poses, out with the gals. What is striking and common to all these whimsical images is their centrality. The lowered eyelids of each angular,
girlish figure very effectively contains the energy. They aren’t asking what the viewer thinks. They are not looking to anyone else (and definitely
not to male figures—there are none of them) for approval. They don’t make eye contact or make an effort to communicate. They are into
themselves. The import of this takes a while to drop on the viewer, but then we start to feel what a rare and wonderful world these women are
inhabiting, and just how happy it is. Green explains that being here helps to inspire this theme. “My life here on the Sunshine Coast has infused a
deeper level of soul, peace, and joy in my work, reflected in my images of mermaids, yogis, nature, and women enjoying time together.” Like so
many Coasters, Green’s activities and pursuits are consciously well-rounded. In addition to her visual artwork, she also teaches yoga at her home
studio and enjoys playing and performing music.
DAVID MOLYNEAUX
TIME & TIDE
WORDS | NANCY PINCOMBE
life on the coast. in pictures.
Molyneaux’s contemplative photography focuses on the rich
and lively area of the intertidal zone, replete with sea life
and detritus. This is juxtaposed with the eternal stillness of
rock. Not quite eternal, though, not quite still. He invites the
viewer to notice the work of the ages, erosion, cracks, and
the delightful “found composition” of natural sculpture.
A longtime resident of Powell River, Molyneaux fondly
describes it as a “vibrant and caring arts community.” His
background as a sculptor is evident in his discerning eye
for form, but he has focused on photography now for many
years. An early interest in mysticism led to a particular study
of the arts of Zen Buddhism.
Time and tide wait for no man. So the saying (very old,
of uncertain origin) goes. And it is taken to mean that
human efficacy has its limitations. It also points to the
relentlessness of these forces and the built-in discomfort
of the human condition, something for which photographer
David Molyneaux has a lot of sympathy.
Time and Tide as an exhibition came together organically
as Molyneaux reviewed his work over the past fifteen years
and noticed a pattern, a preoccupation with timelessness
and stillness. He then consciously sought these qualities
in the inspiring shorelines of Gabriola and Hornby islands.
Ebb and flow are key characters in this work, providing
continual dynamic tension, but the star is that liminal
moment of relief, of slack or turning tide.
Molyneaux’s website (davidmolyneaux.com) says it
succinctly, with lines from T S Eliot’s “The Four Quartets”:
“At the still point of the turning world. Neither flesh nor
fleshless; Neither from nor towards; at the still point, there
the dance is . . .”
simple. ReDecor, a tiny store on Cowrie Street in Sechelt, takes cottage
LA PETITE SOURIS
WORDS | NANCY PINCOMBE
18

life on the coast. in pictures.
“All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.”
— Charles M. Schulz
La Petite Souris makes its home in a little lane off Shaw Road in upper
Gibsons. You’ll smell chocolate even before you open the bright pink
door! Walk in and you’ll see this is a working store: a vat of gooey milk
chocolate is swirling in the corner (Willy Wonka look out), moulds
are ready, and an aproned chocolatier is at work. As the shop is
always experimenting with unusual flavours, such as lavender, stout,
grapefruit, and even poprocks, a tasting visit is highly recommended.
La Petite Souris has been on the Coast for about eight years now and
its reputation is growing steadily.
Amber Stoby took a while to hone in on chocolate making. After
completing a baking and pastry course at Vancouver Community
College, she embarked on what she calls “a self-guided chocolate
tour” in France. When she returned, she started making chocolates
from home after work. Soon orders were coming in. Circumstances
brought her to the Sunshine Coast—luckily for us— where she set up
shop. And the rest is delicious history.
Small businesses are fun and flexible. If you can’t make it to the
store, browse online. Temperatures permitting, these chocolates
can be shipped to you. If you have an idea or craving for a particular
treat, La Petite Souris wants to hear from you. Want something really
out of the ordinary? A birthday party, a wedding or baby shower,
some hands-on sticky fun with the team from work? La Petite Souris
loves a challenge. But it shouldn’t always be about hard work. Stoby
explains, “Our angle of late has been one of self-care. Everyone is
working hard on life and on themselves these days. Chocolate
is a small indulgence when you don’t overdo it. And most people
know a little good chocolate goes a long way. We’ve got some little
prescription pad sheets we give out sometimes . . . ”
QUILTERS GUILD
WORDS | KAREN BIDDLECOMBE
In 1982 a group of women on the Sunshine Coast got together to share
their love of quilting. On March 21, 1991, the group was formalized as
the Sunshine Coast Quilters’ Guild—the umbrella organization for seven
local community quilt groups from Pender Harbour to Gibsons, with a
membership of 175.
The guild’s mission is to provide members with ongoing education,
opportunities to share quilting experiences and knowledge, as well as to
provide community service. Maximizing connections between the guild
and the small groups help promote energy and enthusiasm. Meetings
are held from September to May at the Holy Family Parish Hall in West
Sechelt (5700 Nickerson Road). Activities include mini-workshops,
business meetings, show and tell, and various programs.
Throughout the year, members produce quilts for a variety of charity
and comfort requests. Some of the placements include: Sumac Place,
Yew Transition House, Arrowhead Clubhouse, RCMP, Sechelt Elementary
School, Kidsports, Habitat for Humanity, Ruby Slipper fundraiser, and
families in need who request comfort in the form of a quilt. Additionally,
for the past four years, members have provided quilts to all new babies
born on the Sunshine Coast, resulting in 130–150 quilts being produced
each year.
The 2017 Quilt Show is scheduled for June 17‒18 (10 am to 4 pm).
Admission is $8 (free for children twelve and under). To be held at the
Sechelt Indian Band hall, 5532 Sunshine Coast Highway, the show will
include displays of quilts designed by guild members, a silent auction,
merchants, a Quilt Show challenge, and a quilt raffle. Funds raised are
used in part to provide materials to Guild members for more charity/
comfort quilts for our community.
THE SUNSHINE COAST
they call it spectacular . . . we call it home
WORDS | NANCY PINCOMBE
Here, the traditional territory of the Squamish, Sechelt, Tla’amin and Klahoose
First Nations, is a place blessed with a mild climate and the sort of abundance
that has nurtured resilient and complex cultures and communities for thousands
of years. “Home” doesn’t translate directly into the Sechelt language. The closest
might be the word swiya, which means birthplace, earth, land, dirt, world. It’s a
wonderful word, both specific and holistic, everyday and eternal.
When more recent arrivals are asked why they decided to call the Sunshine
Coast home, they respond with words like: “Community, forest, ocean, freedom,
tranquility, affordability, family, clean, nature, space, artistic, less stress, small
towns, awesome childhoods, proximity to world-class city, sunsets, sea swims,
inspiration, lakes, potential, the succession of summer berries, paradise . . . ”
Thirty-somethings with young kids, eighty-somethings downsizing, and
everything in between, the newest waves of people coming here are more
26

life on the coast. in pictures.
striking in their similarities than their differences. They are all seeking
smaller, more engaged communities, they all want less rush, less noise,
more nature, more freedom. They all value our important amenities such
as hospital and schools. And they’re all reinventing themselves in some
way, minor or major, and seek a place supportive of their new vision.
It’s not always easy. Big employment opportunities and small towns
generally don’t overlap. But determined people who need to cobble
together livings do so in ingenious and unexpected ways. And so you’ll
see a notary who is also a chiropractor, a gymnastics instructor who
coaches at a winery, riding instructors who are also authors, singers doing
landscaping, a realtor running boat tours, a yoga instructor operating a
daycare. Many people work from home offices, using technology to
support being at a distance from major centres. Some of us commute to
the city. Early retirees come here to cut loose from the bustle of Lower
Mainland life and start living how they want, now. Because life is uncertain,
every moment counts, and it is never too soon to be where you love, doing
what you love. On the Sunshine Coast we get it. Time is precious, and we
want to be here, now, whatever it takes.
Whether your passion is permaculture or pastry, beer brewing or bird
watching, composing or cabinet making, or maybe you just yearn for few
quiet years near the sea, the mountains have your back, and the view over
the Salish Sea opens up your possibilities.
Slo is a retail space in the heart of Sechelt. And at the heart of Slo is a
mantra that resonates for many: “Art is not a thing, it is a way of life.”
Their tables, for instance. The tops change and vary: fir, juniper, cypress,
large, small, medium, wonderfully irregular and sculpted by nature. The
bases come in a handful of excellent, sturdy iron designs. Mix and match.
Slo will draw you in. They provide absolutely unique handcrafted furniture,
musical instruments, and sculpture made from 100% reclaimed wood.
WORDS | NANCY PINCOMBE
spring 2017 37

The mindful craft that Slo promotes is what it means to stop
pushing over a living tree every time we need something. The
space, the stuff, their own line of wax and polish . . . a piety is at
work here that will make you pause. Old and worn are cherished,
strength and beauty go hand in hand, simplicity is what’s left
after time has done its work, and design—intelligent, sensitive
human design—brings it all together.
YOU WILL FIND SLO INSIDE THE TRAIL BAY CENTRE IN SECHELT, #39 - 5755 COWRIE STREET.
