THANK YOU, PENNY LANG! “Too much!” It’s an expression her friends will recognize as classic Penny. Accompanied by an open, childlike grin of delight, the expression takes us to the heart of her credo, which was an almost uncanny nose for authenticity, instinctively shunning anything flashy or false. This guided her to make choices that weren’t always consistent with “success” but that instead reflected integrity and a wariness of the burdens of fame. After early, resounding success, she took time away from the music scene to rebuild her mental health and to raise her beloved son, Jason. When she returned to the stage in the late ‘80s, she brought even more warmth and wisdom to her music. In the extraordinarily diverse genre of folk music, Lang emerged as an artist who exemplified the one undisputed common feature: honesty. Penny received long overdue official recognition at the 2006 Canadian Folk Music Awards, where she brought home awards for Best Contemporary Album and Best Solo Artist for her album Stone+Sand+Sea+Sky (Borealis Records). PENNY LANG 1942-2016 At home in Madeira Park, Penny will be remembered for her engaging “soup and song nights” held in the basement of the tiny Anglican Church. Everyone was welcomed, and the fearful were particularly encouraged to perform. She understood that connection is everything. It was typical of her unerring ability, one coveted by artists of all kinds, to find that sweet spot where communication and truth overlap. Among all the talent and quiet fame tucked away in our woods, Penny Lang stood apart. The folk singer, whose career spanned five decades and produced six albums, was a household name in the burgeoning café and folk scene of her hometown Montreal in the late ‘60s. During her long career, she toured internationally and shared the stage with many acclaimed artists.
