AB B R EV I A T I O N S A ND D E F I NI T I O N S Definitions The following definitions apply to the data presented in this report. They serve to improve data comparability. They are used in this way at JGU and do not claim to be universally valid. A-subject First degree program, first major A-C-subjects First degree program: first major (A-subject) + second major OR first minor (B-subject) + second minor (C-subject) Academic year The academic year always comprises the summer semester and the following winter semester. Bologna reform In the Bologna Declaration of 1999, 29 European countries expressed their desire to create a European Higher Education Area by making academic degree standards and quality assurance standards more comparable and compatible throughout Europe by 2010. One of the objectives was to establish a uniform system of graded degree programs, the first stage of which is the Bachelor’s degree qualifying for a future career. A Master’s program can follow on from this. Examination year The year of study or examination year always comprises the examinations held in the winter semester and the following summer semester. First semester students First semester students are all those enrolled in the first semester of a degree program. Foreign students Foreign students are those with one of the following university entrance qualifications: a General Higher Education Entrance Qualification obtained at a German school abroad, at a Preparatory College, or at a school abroad; a subject-linked university entrance qualification obtained at a German school abroad, at a Preparatory College, or at a school abroad; a university of applied sciences entrance qualification obtained at a German school abroad, at a Preparatory College, or at a school abroad. Full-time equivalents Students: Notional number of students of a subject that is obtained by multiplying all majors and minors of a subject by a weighting factor and then adding them up. The individual subjects’ weighting factor within a degree program is derived from the amount of teaching required. Thus, for example, diploma degree programs are weighted by 1, Magister degree programs with two majors are weighted by 0.5 for each major, and Magister degree programs with one major and two minors are weighted by 0.5 for the major and 0.25 for each of the two minors. Bachelor’s degree programs consisting of a major/minor combination are normally weighted by 0.67 for the major and 0.33 for the minor. DAT A A ND STAT I STICS 2 0 1 0 page | 7
Staff: Notional number of people, derived from multiplying the number of all staff members with the proportion of their working hours and summed up. According to this system, full-time employees are weighted by 1, part-time employees by 0.5 etc. Junior Professorship The title of Junior Professor is an official designation for a special faculty position at German universities. This faculty member position was introduced in 2002 by the fifth amendment to the German Framework Act for Higher Education. It allows young researchers with an outstanding doctoral degree to conduct independent university research and teaching and to qualify for a tenured professorship appointment, though they are yet lacking the previously required postdoctoral lecturing qualification. Standard period of study The standard period of study is specified for each course in the respective examination regulations. It describes the period of time in which a first qualification for a future career can be obtained through full-time study. Students in first degree programs Number of students enrolled in JGU’s first degree programs. In the JGU statistics, this number is usually not including students already removed from the register of students and those on leave of absence.
