Driver slams into
tree during police chase
AVILLA, Ind. (AP) — Police in northeastern Indiana say
a driver was taken to a hospital after he crashed went off a
road and crashed into a tree while fleeing from officers.
State police say that a trooper had stopped the car for
speeding on Interstate 69 in southern Steuben County
early Wednesday, when the driver took off. The trooper
broke off the chase as the car entered Kendallville on U.S.
6.
Police say Kendallville officers later spotted the car
again and the driver fled toward the Noble County town
of Avilla, where the car went through an intersection and
slammed head-on into a tree about 50 yards off the road.
Police say the 33-year-old driver suffered a broken leg
and that investigators believe he had been drinking alcohol.
Small Indiana school
district marks its final day
NEW HARMONY, Ind. (AP) — The dismissal bell
rang for the last time at one of Indiana’s smallest school
districts as students, teachers and parents cried and
hugged.
Fourth-graders at the New Harmony School lowered
the U.S. and Indiana flags and the school pep band played
its fight song during Tuesday’s ceremonies marking the
end of the district dating back to the 1870s in the Wabash
River town in far southwestern Indiana.
The district with 137 students this year is merging with
the neighboring North Posey Schools because of state
funding cuts. New Harmony will graduate its final class
of 13 students on Thursday.
Eighth-grader Devin Hulen tells the Evansville Courier
& Press that he’ll miss the school’s uniqueness, saying its
small classes made it like a little family.
BPD begins
seat belt
campaign
Bluffton police are taking
part in a nationwide “Clickit-or-Ticket
seat belt enforcement
campaign on now
through June 3.
In Indiana, more than 250
law enforcement agencies
will conduct special patrols –
day and night, to identify and
ticket unrestrained motorists.
In Indiana, there were
3,322 crashes involving
unrestrained drivers/occupants
in 2011 and 202 fatalities
involving unrestrained
drivers/occupants. Last year
Bluffton officers issued 85
seat belt citations during Click
It or Ticket.
“Although Indiana’s current
seat belt usage rate is
93.2 percent – there remain a
significant number of drivers
who are at an increased risk
for death or injury because
they still fail to buckle up on
a regular basis,” said Bluffton
Deputy Police Chief Nathan
Huss.
Just last year in Indiana,
1,024 people were ejected
from their motor vehicles
due to being unrestrained.
Nationwide, younger motorists
and men are particularly
at risk.
National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration data
shows that among teen and
young adult passenger vehicle
occupants in 2010, ages 18-
34 who were killed in motor
vehicle traffic crashes, 62
percent were not buckled up
at the time of the crash – the
highest percentage of any age
group. The number jumps to
66 percent when just men in
this age group are included.
“Bluffton motorists should
be prepared to see more law
enforcement on the roads during
this 15-day period,” Huss
said. “Special patrols will
take place around the clock,
and if law enforcement finds
you on the road unbuckled at
any time, you can expect to
get a ticket. No excuses and
no exceptions.”
