Tigers weren’t too offensive
Luers blanks Bluffton in softball sectional
By DAVE SCHULTZ
BUTLER — Fort Wayne Luers hit
the ball and put some runs on the board.
Bluffton didn’t do much of the former
and did none of the latter.
Final score: Luers 9, Bluffton 0,
in the Sectional 36 semifinals of the
IHSAA Class 2A girls’ softball tournament
at Eastside High School.
Luers’ nine runs came on nine hits,
with the Knights’ 2-3-4 hitters doing
the damage. Kelsey Richards was 3
for 4, driving in three runs and scoring
two; Julia Hayes was 2 for 3 with four
RBIs, scoring three times; and Darby
McFann was 2 for 3, driving in a run.
Richards and Hayes each had a home
run for the Knights.
The Tigers, who ended the season
10-16, had only three hits on the evening.
Bluffton had two runners on base
in three separate innings, including the
top of the first inning, but was unable to
push a runner beyond second base.
“That’s been pretty much our
modus operandi all season,” said
Bluffton coach Rick Mettler. “When
you don’t generate any offense, it puts
a lot of pressure on your pitching and
your defense.”
Bluffton threatened in the first when
Connelly Mettler reached on an error
and stole second base. Kendall Schreiber
had a two-out infield single, beating
out a roller to third base, but Mettler
the road back to the
Not after the Heat left the
points, Dwyane Wade added
was unable to advance. McFann, the
winning pitcher, then struck out Maggie
Garrett, the losing pitcher, to end
the threat.
Luers got a one-out solo home run
from Richards and an RBI double from
McFann to put two runs on the board
in the bottom of the first. A two-run
homer by Hayes in the bottom of the
third made the score 4-0, and Luers put
the game away with five runs in the
bottom of the sixth inning. A two-run
bases-loaded double by Richards, followed
by a two-run single by Hayes,
keyed the two-out rally by Luers in the
sixth inning. McFann followed with an
RBI single to end the scoring.
Bluffton put two runners on in the
fourth inning, when Garrett doubled
and Kyanne Bryant followed with a
walk, but the threat died when Morgan
Corle flew out to right field.
In the top of the sixth, Taeler Meadows
and Danielle Brown reached on
errors to give Bluffton two on with
nobody out, but Schreiber popped out
to first and Garrett flew out to center,
both swinging at the first pitch. Bryant
made the third out of the inning, on
another fly ball to center on a 2-2 pitch.
“We hit three balls right at them, but
they (the Knights) hit the gaps,” Rick
Mettler said.
Which is what the game boiled
down to — one team got the hits, and
As part of the camp, area coaches
