Adapting to change
This second-term of our 2019-20 academic year will be recalled as a truly exceptional time in CKY history. The
coronavirus pandemic that swept through the world has brought about unprecedented change and a new
normal to our way of life. While the human impact and suffering from this pandemic is immeasurable, in difficult
times come opportunities for growth. Despite the physical distance created by a school suspension which lasted
for almost four months, this global crisis has brought us even closer together as a school community.
A Greek philosopher's maxim that 'Change is the only constant in life' has resonated in a year where we have
seen multiple school suspensions due to external forces outside of our control. Our entire school community has
needed to respond rapidly to uncertain and fast-moving situations. This 16th edition of the CKY Newsletter is
aptly themed 'Adapting to change'.
The extended school suspension proved to be a testing time not only for our students and staff, but also for our
parents who shouldered additional responsibilities in day-to-day childcare and supervising home learning. A
few of our parents have shared their advice for how to cope with the many and varied challenges experienced
at home. Our students have also reflected on how they have kept up an active lifestyle while staying indoors,
which highlights the importance of exercise for both physical and mental well-being.
Wishing our Y12 students well on their last day of school
Our students and staff have needed to be resourceful in keeping themselves occupied during
extended periods indoors. Many students and staff have used this time to discover something new
through reading and watching documentaries or movies. In this edition, a few of our teachers have
shared their recommendations for good books, movies and TV shows that they enjoyed while
spending extra time at home. What an assortment of cultured individuals we have in the staff room!
The online lesson and video timetable which was implemented from February to May tested the ability
of our teachers and students to adapt to new and remote learning technologies. The 16th edition
showcases a wide range of technology tools that were integrated into online lessons and enabled
students to learn more effectively.
The school suspension created an
opportunity for teachers and students
to learn quickly together in this new

classroom, our school auditorium,
was also brought into the virtual
world, and I was delighted to read our
students' letters of reflection on
'Principal's Storytime', a few of which
are featured in this edition.
Our Graduation Trees bloom in June
Despite the adversities of a
prolonged school suspension, the
bonds that tie our school community
together were not only maintained
but reinforced with the support of a
new communication technologies.
The Lip Dub video featured in this
edition of the Newsletter neatly
summarises our approach to
change: 'We're all in this together',
and together we will adapt and
make the best we can of any
unexpected change.
Wishing you all a safe and enjoyable
summer holiday. We look forward to
seeing you in August refreshed and
recharged for the new academic
year!

Students/Parents' Home-learning tips and positive experiences
Adaptive Parents at CKY
The school suspension challenged our students’ ability to adapt to learning
from home. But parents, too, needed to make major adjustments to their
routine to better support their children at home. Below, some of our parents
from the Primary section have shared their advice and experience of how they
overcame the various challenges of extended periods of working and learning
from home
The most important thing is to set a timetable. Make sure they get up
early, sleep early and have exercise everyday.
We made several measures to ensure they went online for lessons on
time and smoothly. We set a timetable for each of them. Made sure one
was occupied in some activity in another room while the other one went
online for lessons. This was complicated for three children and needed
to update whenever the teachers made a change. We also set an alarm
to remind them of the time of lessons. Since different teachers were
sending the lesson codes and passwords in different ways, sometimes
parents’ Whatsapp, sometimes parents’ email, sometimes kids' email
and sometimes google classroom. It was difficult for them to find the
relevant information. We created a page where they can view all the
codes and passwords at one time. Parents can also update it anytime
anywhere.

During the school suspension, my kids asked me when the coronavirus pandemic
will end. My answer was “I don’t know but I know we’re going to have a movies
night this weekend, we’re going to make some desserts together, we’re going
camping in our bedroom...… I believe what matters in this disastrous time, is that
they feel some sense of control and have something happy they are looking forward
to. Think positive.
To relieve pressure, I do exercise every morning. It’s hard to catch up with the
intensive exercise every morning at the very beginning, as I haven’t done any
exercise in my entire life. I found this routine makes me comfortable, relaxed and
recharge.
Despite all that work, I still find time to have fun with my family, like cooking with
kids, playing board games, movie nights and etc. I do treasure pillow talking with
the kids every single night, these little moments make me better understand them.
It’s so funny that once my son told me that he recommends most parents to stock
up on wine instead of toilet paper if they have children, after all, getting drunk is the
best form of relaxation. It really makes me laugh ……
I feel so blessed that my husband gives me full support, assisting me during the
pandemic. I wish other parents good health during these chaotic times and that the
world will return to normal so everybody can peacefully live on.

I think most children can learn fast and they can get used to online class in a
short time. Yet, I think the challenge is to teach them to balance the time on
the computer and other things. I think parents can help the children to set up
a timetable and prepare other learning experiences for the children so they
will not spend too much time on the computer, such as getting more books,
mini sports equipment, board games, arts and crafts at home.

We have tried our best to look at the bright side of the challenges. View them as
good opportunities for you and your children to learn something new and grow.
Let your children know that you are with them to positively face all the challenges
ahead.

It is undeniable that the prolonged school suspension (more than 4 months) casts
doubt on my daughter’s social and academic development, given her young age.
Challenges are inevitable and are being faced at all levels across the globe. With
that in mind, I chose to face them and try to turn the negative situation into a
positive one. For instance, with the significant increase in the amount of free time
during weekdays, my daughter had more reading time and “creativity” time during
the school suspension. Surprises were, my daughter wrote some English poems,
short articles and stories that unintentionally reflected some of the things that she
learnt during the first term of Year 1 and books that she read. With appropriate
praise and encouragement, she could write more and more.
Another example is that my daughter could have more time to learn and practise
various housework tasks as suggested by class teachers on a weekly basis.
Before the school suspension, I did not really expect her to handle household
chores such as rinsing and cooking rice, folding up long-sleeve clothes nicely,
boiling eggs etc. Ample time allowed her to try more new things at a lower time
cost. She seems to be more responsible, confident and happier after acquiring
those life skills. Further, by “connecting” herself to children from rest of the world
facing the same school suspension issue, through reading of the book “My Hero is
You” as mentioned above and related news, she for the first time developed the
sense of “global citizenship”. Of course it is impossible for her to understand
everything given her age, it is a good chance for her to start thinking from a global
perspective. As a parent, going forward, I see the need to reprioritize things in her
life and help her to continue to develop and adapt to the post-pandemic world.
Lastly, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone at CKY which is
truly a unique platform full of positive support.
After the school suspension, I am happy that I got a
good improvement on my IT level and of course I am
shocked that my daughter is growing so much and she
is able to teach me a lot now. That’s why I always
believe that “Sometimes you have to let things go, so
there is room for better things to come into your life.”

Staying fit
with a healthy &
active lifestyle
Keeping fit with a healthy and active lifestyle at home
Staying at home during an extended school suspension can be a difficult time both
physically and mentally. Below, a few of our students reflect on how they have kept
active during the school suspension during long periods indoors, and avoided any
temptation to become a couch potato!
During the period off school, I did
stretches, and workouts which
included planks and crunches for an
hour after online lessons to keep
myself healthy and fit.
Warren Yuen 7B
During the stricter social distancing period,
the sport I did the most was playing
basketball. This is because I have a lot of
fun when playing basketball with my friends.
Moreover, I can have fun while I am
exercising and keeping my body fit which is
important during times like these.
Royce Yip 7B
During this period, I made sure to busy myself with activities so I did not forget what I
have learnt post- COVID 19. This also helped force me out of my bed so I would not
waste away in bed. This is good for my mental health as it allows me to think and
make sure I exercise the most important part of your body - your brain.

Exploring new learning technologies
Our teachers and students have adapted to change by experimenting with a variety of remote
learning technologies. Here, our students share their experiences of learning interactively
online, using some innovative software and communication tools which their teachers have tried
out (in many cases for the very first time!) during the school suspension.
During these few months of online learning, what I find
the most interesting is the interactive tools, such as
Kahoot! and quizizz that allow me to answer questions
and instantly receive feedback in an exciting and
competitive environment. This truly motivates me to
learn more. I remembered using Kahoot! during IB
physics induction lessons. I really enjoyed how the
teacher used Kahoot as a revision tool for a specific
topic, enabling me to absorb the knowledge more
efficiently.
Another cool technology feature that really impresses
me is the annotate function on zoom. It is definitely
fascinating as I can draw and annotate on the teachers’
screen, meaning that students and teachers can
collaborate to work on the task. This effectively replaces
the classroom whiteboard, while being a lot more
convenient as it saves time from cleaning the board. Our
maths teacher, for example, used this function to request
us students to answer questions directly on his slide.
This enables all the students to see others’ work and
learn from them immediately.

Pear Deck is one of the many useful websites we used to help us with online learning. Pear Deck makes the slides
interactive and the teacher can add lots of fun and exciting activities into the lesson; such as drawing, colouring,
linking lines and also some mini pop quizzes.
I find Pear Deck engaging because there are things we can do in Pear Deck but not in school. The special additional
activities Ms Lau added were so much fun! I enjoyed all of Ms Lau's history lessons. One of the most memorable
moments was when Ms Lau asked us to draw Queen Boudicca, who fought against the Romans. Using a primary
source, we used a description to draw her, but most of us couldn't draw her as beautifully as we imagined. Pear Deck
can display every student's answer in a few pages in real time! So the teacher can easily scroll down to select some
students' best answers and show them to the rest of the class. We also tried out a linking game whereby we had to link
the correct questions with their answers.
I also would like to suggest adding some of Peardeck's activities to be used for our normal school lessons. During this
online school learning experience, I was so glad that Pear Deck was part of our online learning. Pear Deck encouraged
me to pay much more attention because of it's fun activities. I am glad to be back at school but sometimes I still wish
we could use Pear Deck at school too... I totally recommend Pear Deck to our school teachers and students.

Turning education upside down in
the Flipped Classroom
Since 4 years ago, I have always been a fan of flipped
classroom. I attempted to create videos and upload it
online so that my students can study the basic knowledge
from the videos and focus on more interesting and
intellectual activities in the class. However, I
experienced strong resistance because some students did
not bother to watch it. So my plan could not work out.
Although I made some supplementary tutorial videos for
IGCSE physics and the feedback was positive, it was not
really flipped classroom.
During the online teaching period, I think it is the best
time to implement this again. The reason is that, firstly,
the interaction between teachers and students is limited
anyway, so there may not be a big difference between
doing it live or recording it as a video. Secondly, due to
the network latency, students may not listen or see
clearly during the online live teaching at all times.
Giving them videos would be much more reliable and
the students can control their own learning pace. Thirdly,
during the online lesson, I could be there to answer
individual questions so a more personalised feedback can
be given.
Other than watching the videos, the students got to finish
the worksheets and upload it to the Google Classroom
for checking. On a regular basis, there were also Kahoot!
Quizzes by each subtopic to formatively assess their
understanding. Apart from letting the students know how
they do, it helped teachers understand the class progress
too.
One of my favourite parts was the Year 10 IB physics
induction. I taught the students how to use a video
analysis software called Tracker in the teaching video. I
also showed them how to find the gravity of the Mario
World and challenged them to check the gravity of the
other games. A student in this class, Abraham Cheung,
took the challenge and investigated the gravity of the
minecraft world. Not only did he use the Tracker to
analyse, he also decompiled the program to check the
coding inside. He found out that the gravity is around
30m/s 2 in the minecraft world, which is three times
greater than our Earth!

Ta king Drama online with virtual
performances and Jamboard
Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, lessons held in classrooms
were replaced with online lessons, which restricted forms of communication
and interactions crucial for drama lessons. As a result, various methods
were used to provide the essence of interaction in drama lessons, creating
a thrilling and interesting experience for online learning.
Posture and costumes were used to produce and present two
different stereotypes in the forms of images, which were later displayed in
class. As I saw images of classmates being displayed on the screen, their
lively postures, ridiculous costumes and awkward facial expressions made
me feel extremely amused throughout the whole online lesson. The
amusement and the second-hand embarrassment brought by the pictures
brightened the mood of the lesson and made the lesson more enjoyable to
have.
7F Luca Ng in full costume!
To make classes entertaining and humorous, Commedia Dell'arte
styled lazzi were performed live in class. After my performance, I felt the
endearing adrenaline flowing through my head, leaving me feeling both
refreshed and exhilarated afterwards. Similarly, the physicalities of
Commedia Dell’arte characters were also explored in class. The nostalgia
of my class’ ardour and chaotic atmosphere rushed to me as I saw my
classmates forcibly act out entertaining movements on the screen, which
made me realise how
the use of cameras
have successfully
fulfilled the lack of
interaction and
excitement that

Action! Taking Drama online with virtual performances and Jamboard
Finally, Google Jamboards were used to summarise different characters of
Commedia Dell’arte. The ability to see all the different information my classmates
came up with was definitely intriguing as I was able to look at different ideas from
different perspectives by reviewing virtual sticky notes and simple ideas, giving me a
whole new perspective on online learning tools.
Overall, the different methods used to make online drama lessons interesting
was very impactful to the quality of our lessons. Not only did these methods create an
eventful learning experience for me, but I was also able to enjoy the online drama
lessons as much as our face-to-face lesson at school.

Y4 AND Y5 ART VIRTUAL PORTRAITS
In Week 17 of online learning, Y4 and Y5 students learned about Gregg Segal, an artist that uses photograph explore
culture. They created self-portraits inspired by Segal that tell a story and make you think. They chose items that were
most important to them during the school suspension and journey into online learning, and arranged them while
keeping balance and contrast in mind.
“I felt great doing this project because it was very fun thinking
of what to add in the photo. Some of the items were board
games that I played with my parents when they had time.
There were also books/magazines that kept me amused.
When it was Sunday, I went to learn tennis, so my racket and
tennis ball were also included in the photo. And of course,
there were also the items that I used in class during
suspension (like my mousepad and mouse). Also, I love to
exercise so there was a stepper and a skipping rope in the
photo.”
Alex Ming 4A
Liana Wong 4A
“My most important thing during the school suspension was the printer,
scanner and the different electronic devices. It was very important
because I used it to upload my homework, print suspension work and
join online lessons. I placed different kinds of things near myself
because I want to show that many materials and things helped me a lot
in the suspension. I think the most important is the mask. It helps
protect all people and your body from getting infected by this horrible
and mighty Covid-19 virus. I liked decorating and putting the objects
around me. I really enjoyed this project.”
John Wong 4E
“This photo is about the things I needed and used during
the suspension. I liked this activity very much. I think this
really made my interest in photography grow greater. I did
not know that photography was about art! I really had fun!”
Page 21
“This photo is about the process from school to
online learning and back. First, the rental books
from school, then the worksheets for online
lessons. Finally, the Yau’s Garden books to
symbolize GP and going back to school. It took
a long time gathering and arranging the items, it
was really fun and interesting!”
Angelina Chan 5A
“Instead of placing online learning materials, I
put all of my Harry Potter collection in the
portrait. Since the suspension, I have started
reading Harry Potter and I got very interested in
it. The Harry Potter collection is like a piece of
precious treasury to me.”
Rose Li 5B
“During the suspension period, I had to work on
this Self Portrait project. I put all my things on the
floor and lay down naturally. I was inspired by the
artist – Gregg Segal . I was also very interested
when I was working on this art project.”
Jasmine Cheung 5C
Page 22
“It was fun to organize the objects and
pose with my favourite character. It
was fun to try photography and I
learned how to take good photos.”
Rosaline Chong 5E
“The suspension learning was sure a
memorable experience, so I decided to
use this chance and seize the moment.
It was fun learning and playing at the
same time.”
Lydia Yau 5F
Oscar Fong 5F
“When I composed my self-portrait, I
wanted it be related to my online study
during this epidemic. First of all, I
needed an alarm clock to wake up
early every morning. I also read books
during suspension-mostly school
related like the Chinese book, “The
Three Kingdoms” and even the William
Shakespeare series! I also needed
computers, iPads, iPhones and a
headset for online lessons and games
with my friends! Of course, I needed
stationary for taking notes during the
lesson and for doing my homework as
well. Snacks and water were definitely
needed during this school suspension!”

During the school suspension, life was tedious.
Fortunately, my kindhearted class teacher Ms. Wong
assigned a few fun activities for me. The activity I liked
the most was frying eggs because it was quite
challenging to crack the egg without breaking the yolk.
On my first try, I failed since the egg was a bit
overcooked. I was about to give up, yet my supportive
Mum encouraged me to try again. At that time, I added
20 ml of water and I switched off the fire just in time.
Surprisingly, my second try was a success! I was
overjoyed that my egg was in the shape of a round
circle! After that experience, I learned that I should
never give up when I failed to complete a task. Instead,
I could succeed if I kept on trying. Moreover, I
discovered that I could attach 3D animals on my
pictures by using an amazing online software called
Google 3D! I tried many different animals and I found
out that the shark was the scariest. After all, life during
school suspension wasn’t that monotonous!

I have taken the bakery challenges
assigned from my mom during school
suspension. She has taught me all
the basics, and she encourages me
to invent and create as many end
products as I want. There are for sure
failures, but I have a lot of successful
masterpieces as well! My favorite is to
bake pizza because the dough is
easy to make and I can ask my
brother and sister to join me by
managing the toppings together. We
have many good memories through
baking together.

During the COVID-19 outbreak, I had to stay home most of the
time because of my safety. I took this slim chance to learn a lot of
more interesting things I have never made or done including
making fruit tea. Making fruit tea is very easy. It only needed a few
simple ingredients and it could be made. I made my fruit tea with
the following ingredients including three slices of lemon, apple and
orange, one quarter dragon fruit, six cubes of ice, a bottle of water,
a bag of green tea and a tablespoon of honey. The fruit tea I made
was so good that my family made an exact copy of my first one! I
really enjoyed the process of making fruit tea because it is always
fun and interesting to do, make or experience something new. If I
can make another one, I would take out dragon fruit from my
ingredients list and add mango and kiwi to the list. After this
extraordinary experience, I finally learnt how to make a good fruit
tea and how to make a nice and refreshing healthy drink.

On a Sunday in March 2020, I was sweeping the floor. I
wanted to keep my house neat and tidy, as there is

all the dirty things in the garbage can. I felt glad and happy
because I could move around to do some exercise.

During the school suspension, one of the life skills that I learnt
is to fry chicken wings. I learnt how to cook chicken wings from
my grandma. It was delicious. Coincidentally, there was a
homework assignment that required me to cook chicken
wings. I used what I learnt from my grandma. My parents said
my cooking was yummy.

During this suspension, I had to do some moral ED
homework, my favourite one was cooking a sunny
side up. First, I had to crack an egg into a cup. Then, I
need to open the fire and add some oil to the pan.
After the pan is hot enough, add the egg gently into
the pan. Next, add about half a cup of water into the
pan with the egg then cover the pan with a lid and let it
boil until you think it is done. I thought the hardest part
was the adding the water part and the adding the egg
part. The hard thing about both is that i have to bear
the heat for a little while to slowly add the water and
the egg. When I put in the egg, my hand would feel
really hot and because of the heat, when I added the
water, it bounces up in little droplets and when it lands
on your skin it feels painful. After sharing my
experience with you, I hope you can learn how to
make sunny side up too.

During the suspension weeks, we had to do
some tasks, for example, fry eggs, steam
eggs and much more. Out of all of them, I
thought that frying vegetables was the
hardest. At first, it was quite easy, I just took
out the vegetables and washed them. The
hardest part for me was when we needed to
fry them with oil, normal people would just
put the vegetables on the pan, but I’m afraid
of the oil that’s flying everywhere near the
pan. So I took longer than normal people.
But at the end it was a success and a really
memorable experience.

Keeping up good habits in literacy,
reading and writing online
How did the school suspension
change our reading habits?
During the school suspension, we were
all told to stay home and stay safe. As a
side effect, this directive forced the avid
readers in our school community to alter
our reading habits.
Enes is so engrossed in a good book he
hasn’t been tempted once by those crackers!
With libraries shuttered and Kindle
editions costing money, some of us
turned to the dusty shelves of our home
library. However, after the fifth of sixth
reading, even our favorite titles get old,
no? Moreover, our busy online
timetables left precious little time for
pleasure reading. As a result, we found
ourselves using our computers and
phones more and reading a lot less.
Now, since school has resumed, we
must adapt to the new normal. And, like
many elements of this novel era,
reading--how we read, what we read--
must evolve and progress.

The Struggle
is Real
Some felt that the school
suspension was a relaxing
holiday, while others, like
me, felt it was a major
roadblock in our education
and learning.
During this time, we were
asked to stay home by the
school and government
and proceeded with
classes on platforms like
Google Meet or Zoom.
Assessments and tests
were taken online, which
came with the dreaded
technical difficulties. Lags
in the system caused us
students to miss out on
important pieces of the
theory and occasionally it
was quite difficult for
teachers to answer our
questions. Constantly
staring at the computer
screen could also be
literally painful, causing
troubles like headaches.
For me personally, the
w o r s t p a r t w a s t h e
transition from handwriting
to typing. Some of us are
not proficient in typing,
which results in greatl
disadvantage for us in
online assessments and
exams.
Moreover, the fact that
distractions caused by our
surroundings were an
issue--construction noises
from surrounding flats, car
horns from the streets
below with traffic noises,
our younger siblings just
being loud. I won’t even
get into the temptations of
an open browser options
and video games. These
issues came together as a
giant firewall, obstructing
our learning.
That said, over the course
of the suspension period, I
adapted and eventually
became a better typer and
online student. I have
trained myself to ignore
my surroundings various
distractions noises and
interruptions. Moreover, I
learned to deal with the
current technology and
communication issues
and, in most instances,
successfully overcame
them. Hopefully, if there
are more closures in the
future, we’ll be able to
take this experience and
use it constructively and
positively. But, if I had my
choice in the matter, I’d
say: Let’s stay in school!

After returning to school, Year 6 wowed assembly by sharing a video they had
created during the school suspension. The song ‘We’re all in this together’ by
High School Musical was dubbed by our very own students in 6C and their
Form Tutor, Ms Tanaka, using video footage of themselves while at home during
the school suspension. It was great to see how 6C had adapted to this
challenging period of online learning, and supported each other remotely in a
true spirit of togetherness. Although the students in 6C were physically distant
while creating the video, they were never that far apart!
Page 34
During this pandemic, our class 6C decided to
do a project where we lip-synced to the song
“We’re All in This Together” from High School
Musical. We chose lines to lip sync and
individually filmed our lines into clips, then we
filmed ourselves dancing and doing activities
like reading books and doing sports during
quarantine.
We chose the song “We’re All in This Together”
as it was used in the final scene of the movie
High School Musical, where the entire cast
sings this song, which is about how they all
have to come together as one, just like how
“We’re All in This Together” during this
pandemic.
In this pandemic, even though we were
physically apart from each other, we felt like we
were all in this together. Thanks to our amazing
form tutor, Ms. Tanaka, we could connect with
each other through this spectacular project.
Over the course of this, we had many online
meetings and practices, through which we got
to see some of our classmates' talents that we
had no chance to see in school, proving the
fact that, like the song says, “Everyone is
special in their own way” (and, like our school
says, “Every child is good at something”). This
activity successfully brought us together as a
class and made 6C closer, providing some
laughter and leaving a joyful memory in this
pandemic.

CKY Science Fair
We encourage our students to build their ability to adapt
not least during our annual Science Fair. Here, a primary
student reflects on the ways in which she has needed to
adapt to new challenges experienced throughout her Science
Fair project: Nepenthes
In my Science fair project, I learned about a special plant called Nepenthes such as
the life cycle, habitat, food, mutualistic relationship and two special ways to remove
waste. Both of my parents helped me with my project. Mum and I found pictures
and made models together. Dad guided me with the details and writing. It was a bit
challenging but I persevered and made it to the end. Compared with last year’s
hummingbird presentation, I think that I improved a lot. I think the reason why is
because my Year 1 project was like reading a report (I used a reference sheet!). In
this project, I can describe the details that I want to talk about because I spent lots
of time researching the topic, I knew the information like the back of my hands. I felt
very glad about having one of the best projects in class 2A. It is a pity that I cannot
present my project on Science Night because of the coronavirus outbreak.

HK Youth Science, Technology &
Innovation Competition
We were delighted that one of our primary students recently achieved First Place in Research at the HK Youth Science,
Technology and Innovation Competition for his project “Catching More of the Sun”. Yet another example of a young
scientist who is adapting to change by taking an experimental approach to the environment which he observes.
The aim of my research project was to find a way to improve the power output of solar panels,
through the application of filters, different cooling treatments and also reflectors. One of the
challenges I encountered when performing the experiment was maintaining consistent light
intensity as the sun is ever changing. To workaround this, I had to complete the experiment very
quickly, sometimes needing to restart because of the sudden changes in sunlight. The most
rewarding experience was presenting in front of the judging panel of university professors. It
made me nervous but I told myself to treat it like any other presentation. Fortunately, every
question I was asked was within my scope of knowledge. In the end, I was very fortunate and
proud to receive the award for first place. Thank you to my parents, teachers and classmates
for supporting me.

Gary Ngai
(CKY Class of 2017)
Studying International
Business at HKU
Hi everyone, I am Gary Ngai from the Class of 2017 and I am currently studying International Business
and Global Management at the University of Hong Kong. I would like to start off by mentioning how
grateful I am to be invited to be a part of this Newsletter. Three years into university, just a year away
from entering the real working environment, I have most definitely learned a lot. So here I am, sharing
some tips and experience about what it is like to transition into university life.
When I was still studying IB, I was looking
forward to having that perfect university life. I
was going to be freed from studying, and even
vowed to have as much fun as possible during
the four years. Especially after achieving an
ideal IB score, my self-confidence was at an alltime
high. I was thinking to myself… Now that I
have mastered the IB “game”, nothing is
unattainable right? Well… that has obviously not
been the case.
On exchange studies at the University of Toronto
Heading into freshman year, I refused to revise,
and was being as lazy as you could imagine. I
felt as though the IB knowledge I had gained
would be sufficient in getting an A+ in any test
during my first year. After the rigours of IB, I
thought how hard could it possibly be to get an
A+? Well… I was wrong. As opposed to some of
my classmates who got decent grades, I on the
other hand got C’s and B’s. If I had to choose a
word to describe the situation, I believe the word
is ‘Humbled’. I was completely humbled by this
new society that I am in.
Being a student in CKY has its benefits and
drawbacks. One of the drawbacks is that we are
one small and secluded community. Not realizing
the vast talent pool within the larger society, I
thought I was most definitely going to swim
through life – and win easily. I am grateful
though, to have received this reality check. I
realized that I was not all that special or unique. I
decided to start working hard again, in hopes
that I can make some changes to my grades.
However, I was still underachieving when
compared to my classmates. Soon, I was
depressed and was feeling immensely stressed
due to the fact that I might fail in life. I was
wondering how my classmates could adapt to
university life so easily, what have I done wrong?
With the cohort at HKU Business
Page 38
After a long and sluggish semester, I told myself that I had to ‘stay in my lane’ and stop comparing myself
to other people. University is a very diverse place, you have to accept the fact that everyone lives and
learns at a different pace. Some might succeed earlier than you do, and some might find success a little
later. I decided to stay humble, and open-minded. Once I adopted this mentality, I realized that I was
doing so much better in university, because I was no longer chasing what I left out during the first year.
Instead, I was just focusing on delivering the best quality of work that I could achieve.
And I have to say, this mentality worked out pretty well for me… my grades have vastly improved, won
some case competitions along the way, and gained some valuable and interesting internship
experiences. This summer, I am even more honored to be able to work at JP Morgan as a corporate
analyst.
No matter if you are heading into university soon, or just starting IB, I believe that adopting this mentality
will be beneficial to you. I hope that my piece advice can help you all in becoming the best version of
yourself! As my friend Joshua Cheung (Class of 2017) once told me “Don’t lose focus on your goals. We
all have life commitments to fulfill. It’s not to be the best in one day, but to get a little bit better, little by
little, day by day.” Stay humble and open-minded!

Gordon Chin
(Class of 2018)
Studying Medicine at CUHK
“
Two years into university, and
I have mainly learned that I
know nothing.
”
Entering university can feel like being
cast adrift. The narrow constraints of
the curriculum and the desperate
struggle for exam scores suddenly
vanish, replaced by a boundless sea of
knowledge and equally limitless
freedom. Some choose to take a more
relaxed attitude towards grades, while
others pursue academic honors. Some
join student societies and organize
social or academic events, while others
join service teams to do meaningful
humanitarian work. Of course, there
are always a few people who somehow
manage to do all of the above.
Personally, I was not particularly
proactive in my first years at CUHK, but
with numerous opportunities to join
everything from academic conferences
and summer programs to research
projects and service trips, it was not
hard to enrich my university life with a
variety of experiences. As an introvert, I
had difficulty adjusting at first, but I feel
that I have found a balance. On one
hand, personal growth is only possible
outside my comfort zone, so I sought
out interesting experiences, reminding
myself that I would regret
missed opportunities much more
than any failures. On the other hand,
pretending to be someone I am not is
exhausting, so I remind myself not to
make myself miserable just to fit in.
Studying IB at CKY made the transition
less abrupt than it could have been. It
developed my independent learning
skills, since I learned that the resources
I needed were usually available, but
that it was up to me to use them well.
Additionally, I found a familiar culture of
mutual support in CU Medicine, which
w a s a w e l c o m e s u r p r i s e . N o
t emphasizing rankings tends to
foster cooperation instead of
competition.
For those facing exams or university, I
would like to share some thoughts.
Firstly, independent study does not
mean that you must face the world
alone. In uncertain times like these,
close friends are the most valuable
resource you can have, whether they
help you study or just by keeping you
sane when you feel overwhelmed. Do
not hesitate to ask for help.
For other chronic procrastinators out
there, my advice is to try to build habits.
Relying on bursts of willpower is not
optimal. Willpower alone cannot fend
off temptations for long, but even the
smallest positive habit can make a
significant difference over time. To get
things started, make it as convenient as
possible to be productive, and as
inconvenient as possible to access
distractions. For instance, I charge my
phone outside my room, which makes it
much less likely for me to impulsively
check on it. I find that procrastinating is
the worst possible use of time, since it
is neither useful nor enjoyable. Avoid it
by regularly rewarding yourself with
scheduled breaks, doing something
you actually enjoy.
When you feel discouraged, remind
yourself why you started. When facing
seemingly endless notes to review,
keeping my goal in sight was what kept
me motivated. With clinical years
ahead of me, bringing more unique
challenges, my journey as a medical
student has barely begun. The road
may be long and full of uncertainty, but
knowing that it is essential preparation
for my future responsibilities makes it
all worth it to me.
Last but not least, know what resources
are available to you and take full
advantage of them. Take every
opportunity to gain skills or experience.
For instance, it is easier than ever to
learn something useful online, with
popular courses offering everything
from ethics to programming. In my
opinion, though, the most important
skill to acquire in this way is learning
how to learn. What matters in the long
run is not what you currently know, but
rather your ability to learn.
