Susan Schell is the Director of Senior Leadership and Organizational
Development Programs of the College of Business at Colorado State
University. After a long career as a business executive, she is now
positioned to help the business world with training and development
programs that improve company performance, assist with retention of
employees and maintain a pool of trained personnel. Susan spent five
years as an instructor in the College of Business and eight years as
director of the Career Management Center. Prior to joining the College,
she spent 7 years as an investment banker at Citadel Advisory Group,
a boutique investment bank in Fort Collins, Colorado, and 18 years as a
principal and executive at Advanced Energy Industries, Inc.

Frank Smith received his BSE from the Air Force Academy, MBA from Chapman
University and Ph.D. from Texas Tech University. His research includes Exchange
Traded Funds, Market Valuation, Market Efficiency and Options Financial Modeling.
Frank has published sixteen articles in seven years as a professor. They include
topics ranging from financial distress and bankruptcy to the efficiency of exchange
traded funds versus mutual funds. He has won three separate awards both for
teaching and research.
Having started and owned his own business, Frank brings real-world experience
into the classroom. He has also performed consulting work for both regional banks
and nationally recognized nonprofit organizations. He is proud of his two CFA
Global Investment Challenge MidSouth Regional winning teams as well as the firstplace
award for the hybrid division for the student managed fund he developed
and ran at his previous school. He is a husband and father of two, and enjoys road
biking, golf and spending time with his family.

Techniques for High-Impact Leadership

DESCRIPTION
Through interactive discussions, small group simulations,
360-degree feedback, and one-on-one coaching, this course
will give you a deeper understanding of high-impact leadership
and help you apply that understanding to take your leadership to
the next level. After completing the course, you will have a solid
foundation in the science-tested principles of leadership and
understand your own leadership style and preferences. You will
bring these principles and your personal practices together for
form a Personal Leadership Analysis Plan. The course includes
some pre-work.

Troy Mumford enjoys doing research that explores leadership at different
organizational levels (e.g., supervisory, managerial, and executive), in teams,
and in shaping organizational culture. In addition, he investigates the types
and determinants of leadership team roles as well as the connection between
leadership actions and systems in driving organizational quality culture. He has
published his research in multiple premier journals. Troy is also passionate about
teaching, and has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in Organizational
Behavior, Human Resource Management, Compensation and Benefits, and
Management, receiving and being nominated for several teaching awards. He
has also been involved in variety of independent consulting and applied research
projects for organizations in the biomedical, manufacturing, financial, legal, and
airline industries as well as the United States government.
Troy received his Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior and Human Resource
Management from the Krannert Graduate School of Management at Purdue
University.

This executive education module will introduce you to design
thinking, a method for creative problem solving and continuous
innovation. Design thinking is a collaborative process that
emphasizes diverse thinking and creative problem solving
to create value. Participants in this sprint will build creative
competence, appreciate and experience the value of failure, risk,
and experimentation, and gain confidence in adapting design
thinking processes and tools to fit their industry.

Scott Shrake serves as the Director for the Institute for Entrepreneurship in
the College of Business at Colorado State University. As the Director of the
Institute, he promotes entrepreneurship, innovation, product development, and
commercialization for students, faculty, and community members. Previously,
Scott served as an engineering faculty member and the Executive Director of
Entrepreneurial Advancement at Arizona State University.
Shrake was the co-founder and COO of Vicinity Health Inc., a digital health startup
that was selected as a finalist for the TiE 50 Awards Program and recognized
as one of the 100 hottest global tech startups in 2014. He has also served as a
mentor and advisor to multiple startups in education technology, health care, and
sustainability.
Scott received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of
Pittsburgh’s Sustainability and Green Design Group.

Mary Peery is the President of Mary Peery & Associates. She has 23 years
of experience as a business manager with Hewlett Packard including
global business management, executive leadership, strategy development,
operations, transformation leadership, and organizational change management.
From the time Mary joined HP in 1984 until she become Senior Vice President
of Digital Imaging and Publishing in 2000, she held positions in R&D and
Manufacturing in developing and bringing to market many leading-edge
technology products and solutions for consumer and commercial customers.
In 1993, Mary assumed a rotational role as the Northern Colorado regional
diversity manager. For 18 months, Mary worked with the business leaders in this
region to help them understand the importance of diversity to their businesses
and to implement diversity strategies within their organizations.
Mary holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Colorado State
University.

This course will introduce you to the fundamentals of primary
and secondary data analysis with the aim of applying analytic
techniques used by marketers to transform data into decisionmaking
information. The course will instruct you in the concepts,
methods, and applications of these research practices. A variety
of research approaches will be examined, including methods for
collecting primary research as well as analytical methods applied
to both primary and secondary data. The use of secondary data
from numerous data sources to inform marketing decisions has
become more widely accepted in business practice.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Learn the primary marketing research design
approaches.
2. Review basic data tabulation and basic statistical
analysis.
3. Understand regression analysis in the context of
predictive analytics.
4. Learn cluster analysis in the context of
segmentation and targeting.
Professor Gina Slejko holds a Bachelor of Arts in economics from the University
of Colorado Boulder (2002) and a Ph.D. in marketing from the Leeds School
of Business at the University of Colorado Boulder (2009). Gina’s expertise is in
consumer behavior and her research efforts focus on topics of consumer wellness,
and sensory marketing. Her research appears in the Journal of Consumer
Research, the Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Consumer Psychology, Health
Psychology, Food Quality and Preference, Appetite and has appeared in media
outlets including The Wall Street Journal, BBC News, The Telegraph, Boston
Globe, and NPR.com.
In her consulting, Gina focuses on the use of straight-forward analytical methods
to help companies leverage the data they have to make better business decisions.
She currently teaches these analytical methods in Marketing Research and
Marketing Analytics in the undergraduate program at the College of Business as
well as in the Data Analytics Specialization of the MBA.

This course blends managerial and theoretical perspectives
in an examination of sales strategies, sales tactics and best
practices in professional selling. The primary context for the
course is business-to-business (B2B) selling, although many
of the course concepts are relevant for direct-to-consumer
situations. The course examines the entire sales process, with
particular emphasis on relationship selling, planning and delivery
of sales presentations, and trust-building techniques.
John Weiss has had a relationship with the College of Business at Colorado
State University for nearly 40 years. He received his bachelor’s degree in finance
from CSU in 1979 and then a master’s degree in Marketing in 1988. In over 30
years of employment at the College, he has served in both faculty and senior
administrative roles.
John began a private sector career in 1979 with Georgia-Pacific Corporation’s
Distribution Division, where he initially held several product-management positions
before moving into outside sales and sales management roles. After completing
his graduate degree at CSU, he moved into an academic career, joining the CSU
College of Business, Department of Marketing as a faculty member.
For over 20 years he has also maintained business relationships with a wide
variety of large and small private sector firms providing consulting in both
marketing research and sales force management.

cross-functional teams.
Travis Maynard teaches team effectiveness and leadership classes at both the
undergraduate and graduate levels at CSU, where he has been nominated for
a variety of teaching awards. In addition to teaching, Travis has also conducted
extensive research in the areas of team effectiveness and leadership.
He is currently conducting research projects with the U.S. Army and NASA looking
at team resilience and adaptation. He has received several research awards for his
publications in premier journals.
Travis holds a BBA in Accounting from the College of William and Mary, an
MBA from the University of Denver Daniels College of Business, and a Ph.D. in
Organizational Behavior from the University of Connecticut.

impacts so that you can leverage innovations to create a
unique competitive advantage. After the course, you will be
ready to leverage innovations such as AI, quantum computing,
autonomous decision making, IOT, synthetic biology, cloud and
new business models to your competitive advantage.

Phil McKinney is President and CEO of CableLabs, the nonprofit research and
development and innovation lab funded by the global cable industry. During his
career, McKinney has held leadership positions in major companies, including
serving as CTO for Hewlett-Packard. While at HP, McKinney created the Innovation
Program Office (IPO). The IPO identified, incubated, and launched adjacent and
fundamentally new technologies, products, and services that became the growth
engines for HP.
An author, speaker, and innovation guru, McKinney shares his rule-breaking
approach to innovation and creativity in his book Beyond the Obvious. He has
been recognized by Fast Company, BusinessWeek, MSNBC, Vanity Fair and other
media outlets for his industry contributions. In 2016, his podcast, Killer Innovations,
became a nationally syndicated talk radio show, carried by more than 65 radio
stations.

A growing number of businesses are realizing that their ability to
successfully execute projects is closely tied to revenue growth
and profitability. Business leaders are entrusted to manage the
resources and assets of the firm, and their understanding of
project management principles helps them ensure that they
apply those resources in a way that maximizes shareholder
value. This course helps the participant understand the basic
skills associated with traditional and agile forms of project
management, including making tradeoffs between schedule,
cost, performance, risk managment, stakeholder management,
project monitoring, release planning, and iteration management.

for acquiring, prospecting, valuing the target, creating and
presenting the offer, doing due diligence and closing the
deal. Participants will gain an understanding of the various
components of mergers and acquisitions in the small and middle
markets, including tools and advisors. You will learn to recognize
red flags, how to move past them, and make better decisions on
when to kill a deal vs. moving forward.
Scott Myatt joined Caber Hill Advisors in 2017 as Managing Director on the
firm’s healthcare team with a primary responsibility to lead M&A activities in the
audiology and hearing aid industry. He has been recognized as one of the most
transformative executives in the audiology and hearing aid industry, completing
over 60 transactions.
Scott spent the previous 11 years working in corporate M&A for numerous hearing
aid manufacturers. Prior to entering the audiology and hearing aid industry, Scott
worked as an acquisition professional in the energy industry and as a valuation
professional for a consulting firm.
Scott holds a B.A. in Japanese from Brigham Young University, an MBA from
Colorado State University, and a Master of International Management from
Thunderbird School of Global Management.

This course will offer a data privacy framework that explains
drivers and outcomes, as well as overviews of both the customer
and organizational risks that are involved. The instructor takes a
synergistic approach to examining data privacy from individual,
organizational, regulatory and global perspectives. Participants
will have a comprehensive understanding of the data privacy
landscape and will be able to identify the most serious privacy
elements in the organization and proactively improve practices
for strategic advantage.
Kelly D. Martin is Professor of Marketing and Dean’s Distinguished Research
Fellow at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. She joined CSU in 2007, and
currently teaches Quantitative Business Analysis across the College of Business
MBA Programs.
She is coauthor of the book The Intelligent Marketer’s Guide to Data Privacy. Kelly
is incoming Co-editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Public Policy & Marketing.
Kelly holds a bachelor’s degree from Gonzaga University, an MBA from the Heider
College of Business at Creighton University, and a Ph.D. from the Carson College
of Business at Washington State University, where she was Outstanding Graduate
Student for Research. Prior to academia, she worked as a marketing director in the
assisted living industry.

Strategic Opportunities and Topics in Corporate
Sustainable Enterprise
DESCRIPTION
Sustainability issues are having increasing effects on corporate
strategy and action. While such issues present substantial risks,
they also create substantive opportunities. The course offers
insight into the central issues of sustainability, the increasing
business case for sustainability, and an overview of the
concepts, tools, and techniques of sustainable enterprise. The
course will begin with an overview of sustainability and move
to addressing the opportunities present in the transition to a
more sustainable economy. The course will also address the
various languages and tools used by sustainability professionals,
overviewing various topics such as environmental marketing,
carbon accounting, life cycle analysis, certification systems,
systems innovation, and greenhouse gas policy approaches.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Recognize the economic sources of social and
environmental problems and the transformation
necessary to eliminate those underlying
conditions.
2. Develop an understanding of the importance
of sustainability issues to corporations and
consider the various elements of risk and
opportunity inherent in the transition to a more
sustainable economy.

systems, and tools of corporate sustainable
enterprise.
Dr. Thomas J. Dean is Research Fellow and Professor of Entrepreneurship
and Sustainable Enterprise in the College of Business and School of Global
Environmental Sustainability at Colorado State University. A pioneer in the field
of sustainable and environmental entrepreneurship, he authored the first known
environmental entrepreneurship course in 2001, won accolades for his rigorous
theoretical examination of environmental entrepreneurship in 2007, and published
the first textbook on sustainable venturing in 2013.
He teaches in CSU’s Impact MBA Program and has consulted with numerous
companies and start-ups. He has published over 60 manuscripts and book
chapters. He holds a B.S. in Environmental Management from Penn State
University, an MBA from Oklahoma State University, and a Ph.D. in Strategic
Management from the University of Colorado.

Wherever you want to take your career, executive education at the College of Business can help you
take that next step. All of our courses are offered independently, so you can learn the skills that are most
important to you. There are no prerequisites, and professionals at all levels of industry are welcome to
enroll.
Courses are 16 hours in length and are held on Fridays and Saturdays either on campus in Fort Collins,
Colorado, or online via Mosaic. We offer two courses per month. Upon completion of a course, participants
who attend both days of the course will receive a certificate. There are no formal examinations or grades.
