ECMC’s
Virtual Care
EXTENDING HEALTHCARE SERVICES
INTO THE COMMUNITY DURING THE
COVID19 PANDEMIC AND BEYOND
Connecting with patients using
digital means has shown
promise for many years. Often
called telemedicine, telehealth, or
virtual care, the ability to assess
and treat patients remotely is
rapidly becoming a common care
modality.
With the onset of COVID-19 and
social distancing guidelines, many
healthcare organizations, including
ECMC, found it necessary to limit
in-person patient contact for
certain visit types and conditions.
However, at the same time, we serve
a vulnerable population with a high
prevalence of chronic disease and
complex medical conditions.
As the COVID-19 pandemic
continues to progress, it is
critical that patients maintain
communication for evaluation and
guidance by their providers. In
the immediate short-term, “well
visits” and “routine care” could
be postponed, but as the social
distancing timelines extend, our
dedicated ECMC providers must
maintain a connection to our
patients.
At ECMC, we have rapidly
developed ECMC Virtual Care in the
outpatient, emergency department,
and inpatient settings. ECMC
announced in April the launch of a
virtual ER care platform to provide
video visits for remote emergency
room services, in addition to the
previously established virtual care
outpatient services.
Patients in the community can
now schedule an on-demand video
visit with an emergency medicine
provider through the ECMC
website to address appropriate
medical conditions such as
allergies, bronchitis, suspected
COVID-19, cold and flu, cough,
fever, sore throat, sinus infection,
eye infection/irritation, rash, hives,
upset stomach, heartburn, diarrhea,
nausea, vomiting, and other minor
ailments. For the Virtual ER Visits,
patients select a time slot through a
emergency
room provider
consults with
the patient
to assess
symptoms,
provide
recommendations and prescribe
medications as needed.
In addition, ECMC’s outpatient
clinical services are offering phone
and video visits for primary care,
medical specialty services, surgical
specialty services, dental, and
behavioral health. Patients can visit
The COVID-19 crisis has ushered
in the rapid adoption of ECMC’s
Virtual Care, which we believe will
continue into the future as our
patients and our providers recognize
the value and importance of these
virtual visits. As Dr. David Ellis,
ECMC Emergency Department
Attending Physician and Director
of Telemedicine, UBMD Emergency
Medicine said, “Life and healthcare
have changed significantly due
to COVID-19. Our ability to use
telemedicine and telehealth
capabilities to reach out to our
patients is more important than
ever.”
