Continuing ProfessionalDevelopmentMATHSRachel SykesIn addition to the Subject LeaderNetworks, we are delightedto offer a series of Mathstraining days covering issuesthat teachers are facing in theclassrooms. Our Maths CPDprogramme is led by RachelSykes, a well respected teachingand learning consultant.Rachel Sykes is an experienced primary practitioner who trains, coachesand mentors primary school teachers in all areas of Mathematics acrossLincolnshire. She provides high-quality CPD at all levels, on each aspect of theprimary mathematics curriculum and is Specialist Leader of Education (SLE)as well as a trained Accelerate Coach. Furthermore, as an experienced SLE,Rachel has delivered specific training for Maths Leaders across the region andis a Research Champion and Hub Lead for Mobilise Maths and the LincolnshireAttaining in Maths Project (LAMP).The training delivered by Rachel focuses on latest research, includingrecommendations from the Educational Endowment Fund (EFF). Emphasisis on developing current practice to raise attainment for all learners throughactive engagement, promoting mathematical enjoyment and developingteacher subject knowledge. Rachel also works with the Maths Hub and issupporting schools that are part of the TRG network.Rachel is incredibly passionate about primary mathematics. She believes thatall children have the potential to achieve and that the key to this is developingresilience. The building blocks put in place at the beginning of a child’smathematical journey are essential for success in later-life. Effective transition within a primary school– how to create and sustain best practice in MathsLAMP is a highly respected Maths focused school improvementprogramme in Lincolnshire with a proven track record ofraising KS2 attainment through effective implementation of theevidenced based practise addressed in EEF guidance.In response to feedback from colleagues this has now evolvedinto two separate projects to address key transitions withinprimary schools – Project 1 Transition Early Years to Year 1 andProject 2 Transition Year 2 into Year 3. These will launch late inthe autumn term ready for a January start.Significantly the project straddles the periods up to andincluding transition. The tandem team of School Championsfrom each setting also ensures that teachers either side ofthe transition point have access to the training and CPD, thebedrock of sharing good practise within school and securingsustainability. As long as either member of the tandem teamcan be present for the Professional Learning Communitymeeting there will be continuity. Each meeting will result inshort term action plans being generated for delivery by theSchool Learning Champions to share their responsibility intrying out new learning or teaching strategies.The project will launch in late Autumn with a sharing of theaims, processes and structures with stakeholders. These willinclude headteachers, governors, School Learning Championsand Specialist Leaders in Education. There will be a frontloading of the content of the projects so that the overarchingjourney is understood by all. Following the launch the initialbespoke school based meeting will reflect on current practice,strengths and weaknesses, perceived action points and theMaths intent in each. This will feed into the value added aspectof the PLC to ensure there is a bespokeelement for the participants.Building on learningfrom the previous LAMPprojects the structure willcontinue to operate aroundProfessional Learning Communitymeetings with the Education Endowment Foundation evidenceat the heart of the programme. Strategies will address andtarget classroom teaching and learning as well as strategicsubject leadership. This will raise the confidence of Maths forboth children and teachers as they transition from one stage tothe next.Continued support by the senior leaders within each school willbe essential in ensuring the successful implementation of theprogramme. Underpinning the programme is the methodologyof sustained school improvement to empower staff to structurethe school’s approach to delivery ensuring a viable, sustainableand effective approach to effective transition.All participants will have access to enrichment as part of theproject. A half day on Number Fluency led by Gareth Metcalfeforms one aspect of this enrichment and a half day on LessonDesign led by Kat Finch will form the other. There will beopportunities for non LAMP participants to take part in theseactivities and so widen the access to the expertise.Connect is highly committed to the delivery of such an excitingprogramme. Using the latest research as a driver, we firmlybelieve that it will meet the needs of pupils, teachers andschools in ensuring a strong transition between age phases.Furthermore, it will offer leadership development for teamsof teachers within school who can then act to sustain thestrategies learned and developed in the long term.MATHS SUBJECT LEADERNETWORKS11th November 20205th March 20219th June 20211.30pm-3.30pm15
